I've had people insist that I'm gay because (a few years ago) I disagreed with them when they said that gay people shouldn't be allowed to marry. Apparently in their twisted world, you can't believe in treating people who are different from you as an equal without being gay. They said I was gay and made fun of me for it all because I didn't share their penchant for looking down on people for not being the same as me. Fun times.

Actually, queer is an umbrella term used by many members of the LGBTQ+ community to describe themselves (the Q in LGBTQ stands for Queer or Questioning); so calling a straight man queer sounds a bit weird to me ^^

@David Lyf thats quite a newish convention. Heck, it wasnt even that long ago that "gay" exclusively was a synonym for queer, not a synonym for homo. Honestly i feel like the aggressive effort to make "gay" mean "homosexual" just made things unnecessarily more confusing and complicated.

Being autistic, my answer to all of the questions at the end is a resounding, "Yes, of course, and I didn't know it was because I'm autistic until recently." Which, I might add, makes for a VERY roller coaster-esque life where you ONLY make sense to 'typical' people when you go out of your way to observe what 'typical' looks like to them and try to replicate that; behaviour, appearance, minor motor movements, speech patterns, tone usage patterns, how peoples social roles shift in mindbogglingly weird ways with every shifting context, the absurd things that people actually clump together to categorize as a 'context', etc. My life is basically an open world RPG game on ultra hard difficulty settings, without much of anything in the way of good manuals, internet access, walkthroughs, etc. Just a lot of trial and error and constant, conscious, artificial character engineering and role playing/acting. And it's really, really easy to... forget lines, make role selection mistakes, tone, speech, behaviour mistakes, actual muscle/motor coordination mistakes, etc. Nuthin' comes naturally, except lookin' weird af to other people when I'm not putting all of my energy into portraying a specific role with every fibre of my being.

When I moved to Pittsburgh from Arkansas at the age of 9 years old. I was terrified and felt lost. People wouldn't talk to me, they wouldn't play with me, they didn't even stand near me. All because I sounded different (southern), looked different ( about 20-30 lbs bigger than them, also 4-5 inches taller). *whispers* I was held back a grade. So I changed my entire personality to fit theirs. I would practice talking like them, walking like them, I even gave people things to make them like me. Then I made my first friend, she was my best friend. Years went by and I started to blend in with people, then found out my first friend only became my friend for 200 dollars off a bet. The friendship promptly ended, and I spent the next 3 years inside and talking to no one.

I am a gay woman and I've definitely felt a little paranoid about the assumptions people make about me because of my sexuality. I dont present myself based on who I'm in a relationship with- and i consider myself fairly feminine- and it's always bothered me that at times, disclosing my sexuality becomes a fun gotcha moment for the person I've shared that information with. "Oh, I knew it I had a feeling!" never sat right as a response because not really, you didn't know. You assumed. My personality is not based on my sexuality. And if I explore a "masculine" hobby or fashion choice I can't help but notice people saying "oh of COURSE she does she's a lesbian after all!" but that part of my life has little to no bearing on what I enjoy doing with my time. I've always felt, like most people who don't immediately line up with neat social catagories, that I walk a some what thin line between how I see myself and the expectations and assumptions other people have for me based on something as private and trivial as who I'm attracted to.

This video was awesome! Drives me nuts when people assume a person is gay but their mannerism, fashion etc. People like to assume because it makes it easier for them to go about their lives ha! I see it myself when conversations on sex and sexuality come up in conversation, I'm a straight white girl and I find sexuality fascinating and know quite a lot about it. Although I identify as 'straight', on the spectrum I wouldn't say I was dead on 'heterosexual' I'm a little open. If this comes up in conversation people look at me confused like 'but she's not gay' or 'she doesn't look bisexual'. People need to educate themselves and ignore the stereotypes!

He's always appeared straight to me. No one actually tells me, or talks about it around me; but I'm pretty sure some people think I'm gay. I've heard that some people think that I'm dumb as well. I hardly talk to anyone, so they don't have anything to go on. They want me to be dumb because it makes them feel better about themselves; but if any of them actually says anything to me, I would destroy them. The strange part is that I think they know that too.

I've had people assume I'm straight my whole life, on the flip side of your experiences, because I'm generally quite far from the fashionable, clean shaven, feminine and chatty stereotype of what the average person deems a queer to be. On top of that it has also been hard to untangle myself from societies heteronormative bondage because I am kind of a jokester and so when I tell people that I'm into dudes it often times is laughed off as another one of my bits. It's awfully paining to know that so many people I've met think that "Hey, I like men" is in any way comedic and for a while now I've felt like my sexuality has been treat as a joke my whole life. To hear that heterosexuals like yourself have similar experiences is almost comforting, perhaps through our mutual discovery of what we are perceived as in the world and how it correlates to our self-identity and what we are as people, together we become closer to each other and therefore closer to the rest of mankind that are slowly trying to figure themselves, and each other, out. As my biggest inspiration Bill Hicks once said "we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively".

My love of Disney movies, "feminine music", and musicals makes people assume I'm gay. It got so bad that at one point I questioned whether I was closeted, every time I found a woman attractive I questioned whether I found them attractive because I was tricking myself into liking women. This fucked with me for so long, I spent months agonising over whether my brain was lying to me, I didn't know if one day I would just suddenly wake up and be gay. It got to the point that I looked at typically attractive men and reviewed whether or not I could be attracted to them, I decided that if my brain was gonna lie to me I would force it's hand and I tried to be attracted to men, and yet I couldn't be, it didn't work, it felt like I was trying to force a square into a circle. The reason for this whole mind charade was the stigma around being gay, I wondered whether I had subconsciously hidden in a closet within a closet because society had told me being gay was wrong, even though my entire life I personally did not see it as right or wrong, being gay is unimportant just like being straight. So the entire time I was trying to work out if I was hiding being gay from myself I was having a moral argument with myself. I'm not gay. But what's wrong with being gay? There's nothing wrong with being gay. If there's nothing wrong with being gay then why don't you want you be gay? I don't know, I wouldn't mind being gay, it wouldn't matter. Aha, you must be gay then! Well no, just because I wouldn't mind being gay doesn't make me gay, I find that woman attractive, so how can I be gay? Well maybe you find that woman attractive because you're sub consciously trying to convince yourself that you're straight. Wait, what, but how can I pretend to be sexually attracted to someone. Hello, it's called denial, wake up, you being attracted to women means that you have to be gay because you're trying not to be. But I don't care about being gay, it doesn't matter. Clearly you do care about being gay. But that's because I like women. So being hetero is better than being gay? No, I just don't personally like men. Maybe you do but you just tell yourself you don't because you think being gay is bad and you want to be hetero. This shit went round and round until I told myself that I would be attracted to whoever I was attracted to, I predominately liked women, I had never been attracted to a man, but if I ever was attracted to a man I would embrace it. Essentially, all this fucking stereotyping about what is gay and is not gay is so fucking stupid and harmful to young minds.

I found out one day that quite a few people at my work thought I was gay. When I found out I looked at the person I was talking to, thought about it for a moment, and decided that they were actually calling me a nice and charming person who dresses neatly and smells good, and I was ok with that. I later snuffed out the rumor, but I still found it a bit flattering.

Oh yeah! When I was a kid, I was accused of being "monotone" and "expressionless" by my peers. They'd make robot jokes, of course. Bleep bloop. I ended up watching a shit ton of Disney channel to learn 'normal' facial expressions and vocal inflections; little did I know all of the people on there look and act and sound RIDICULOUS. So now I have the opposite problem; I'm too expressive, and sometimes come off fake. Can't win. And no, I'm not a sociopath, just a really reserved person that doesn't emote a lot by default.

tbh my friends and I make assumption about guys' sexual orientation all the time and it's usually based on how much the guy takes care of himself. Even though we're attracted to guys who are well groomed, know how to be themselves and can be emotional with out worrying about their "masculinity", those guys are usually gay. Like it happens SO OFTEN that we're shocked if we see a guy with those qualities who's straight. It's like we think you're too good to be true, so don't worry about it too much.

Been there. Judged as a lesbian many times. I'm not, not that it would be wrong or anything. But 85% of the time people assume I'm not a straight cis female, they also assume I'm "together with my mom". The moral I take from this is, people be nasty. Also care way to much what folks do with their naughty bits. And their free time. Sure it feels shitty when someone who you find attractive "decides" what they "know" about you personally...without any real facts, reasons, or basic human decency. But that's their damage, not your own. Chin up Elliot.

My entire life. Remember my parents having a discussion about buying me one "girl" toy for like every "boy" toy I was given so I wouldn't turn out "a little funny". I have a bunch of friends who are "hilarious" and but I was always "kinda funny" but had to push that down to just get through shit. That didn't stop the emotional and mental abuse that who I am was never going to be good enough and I would always have to be someone else because who I was worthless and pathetic and it was amazing that I had any friends and that I should have to pay people to be friends with me. So that kind of pushed me away from people and left me just being unable to relate or interact with people on any kind of proper social level because there's no way for be to believe that anyone would like me for who I am.

I think if you live long enough, this happens to everyone. Most sooner rather than later. And it's just awkward any way you slice it, but (at least for me) that urge to be almost deferential is about trying to lessen the awkwardness for everyone *despite* the fact that the person was the one who created that awkward situation in the first place. It's called being polite and taking the high road, which isn't valued as much these days. (I'm not actually ancient, but I'm at least a decade older than you are, so perspective is a thing.) I've regretted reacting like that in the moment and shortly afterward, but looking back on it now, I wouldn't change it.

I actually have the exact opposite problem. This girl I know really thinks I'm straight after I've told her I'm gay, others have told her I'm gay, and the fact that I'm just really gay. Okay, so I'm a teacher and my colleagues and I sometimes go for happy hour drinks on Friday, and this new teacher brought her husband with her, and literally right in front of me--directly across the table--she and her husband were debating whether or not I was gay. Like, I was in shock that they tried to be covert about it RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME. I got so distracted by their behavior that I finally replied like I was a part of the convo from the beginning, "Yes, honey, I am, so can we stop whatever this is you're doing? Love ya, mean it!" (All my other colleagues already knew.)

Also, gonna be frank, I originally started following you because I thought you were gay... and then you mentioned a girlfriend or something, but I kept following because you're fairly interesting.

I'm in college right now and the exact same thing has been happening to me since middle school. I think it boils down to the fact that we don't give a fuck. Wear things people associate with the opposite gender because, hell, they look good. Have mannerisms and tendencies people don't consider "masculine" (or feminine in my case), don't bat an eye about having good friends who are gay or otherwise, be caring towards people of the same gender. People can't accept that not everything has a box to go in. So my solution is to keep on not giving a fuck.

on the topic of changing ones self, i have really bad social anxiety and i would always have attacks whenever i thought people were looking at me because i had no idea why they were. so i dyed my hair bright blue and got face piercings and did my makeup really nice so i knew why they were looking at me and i felt more in control

Yeah, I have the same problem. It’s weird getting bullied for being gay when you are in fact not. I like to think it afforded me some empathy and an understanding that what other people think shouldn’t change who you are. But really it just gave me a knee jerk furious reaction to the word “faggot”. Like I’ve gotten into trouble for telling a girl at a college party to go fuck herself for calling someone a fag, her drunk boyfriend had some words for me and I’m not gonna pretend I didn’t leave that party immediately.

Omg yes I struggle with this sooo often!!! I'm Mexican straight up Mexican I was born there and my entire family was too, I speak write and read fluent Spanish but I don't look like it at all. 9 times out of 10 some one sees me they always assume I'm white so I have to do the same thing you do and convince them that I am I fact 100% Mexican. Even my (unofficial) high school transcript has me categorized as "caucation/Hispanic"

"Have you ever felt misunderstood or been miscategorized [..]?" Only my entire life. And yes I alter my behaviour, but now just because I cant be bothered to explain and educate people that wont get it anyway. Only few people actually bothered to try and get (the real) me.

Not the same thing, but I get accused of being "rude" or "uptight" because I'm quiet. Like, sure, it takes a moment for me to warm up to people, but if you were to see me around my friends, I'm just as loud and obnoxious as they are.

Living in the UK and being a born and bred American often leaves me in this same type of situation. I'm often chastised and blamed for the actions of my country even from back before my birth. Actions of people I don't know and clearly have never had a say in...

Yeah, when you have "bedroom eyes", half of people think your an addict, the other that your looking down on them. And I've tried sleeping better, making a habit of thinking positively during a conversation(makes eyes look wider) and etc. Eventually I got over it, still hate drugs and don't care about people or what they think, except a few close individuals.

I just spent half of this video aggressively agreeing with my laptop. Full on arms raised enthusiastically yelling "yes!" and groaning. Mind you I have never witnessed people talking behind my back about my sexuality (although I had a thing where I caught some people talking shit about my "bold" fashion choice to wear lord of the rings leggings on the train, which is a whole other story, but it did give me a flashback to not knowing whether to confront people "in flagrante", when they are talking behind your back) but I digress! I'm Latina (namely Argentinian), and live in Germany. Since I look whiter than Doris Day making peach cobbler ...and therefore also your got-to-token-Latina, everybody tries to convince me that I'm actually German: "But seriously when did you actually come over here?" "Soo but you're German." "Your parents must be German though, right?" BLLERRGHH Honestly I could give a less than an uninspired shit about where people think I'm from. What really drives me up the wall is, that people who know me for five minutes try to forcefully shove their opinions that they have about me, onto me. Long story short: I very much get it. Thank you!

I have the opposite problem, I'm gay and people think I'm straight. Yeah I know that doesn't sound like a real problem (I get by) but it feels like sometimes I have to almost put on a show (featuring "the gay") in order to avoid THAT awkward conversation. I've had to come out to so many of my friends/people that I know, that I forget who doesn't know and who does know that I like guys. Luckily this helped me realize that it doesn't matter and you shouldn't let peoples opinions stop you from living the life you want to live. (I don't know why I just ranted this rant but yeah... Story of my life)

I changed the entire way I speak when I was a kid because I had moved to a new place and others made fun of me for being different... I'm talking about changing everything about the way I spoke including tone, pitch, volume, the words I used, the accent I used, the speed at which I talked, everything. AND I FULLY REGRET IT

When I was in the eighth grade I found out all the girls on my school bus thought I was in the closet and hung out with me as their 'gay best friend', I asked why they all thought I was gay and they said "you just have this vibe, I don't know what it is but yeah"

In high school some friends, in conversation, kind of just assumed I wasn't a virgin. They were shocked when I corrected them. And a lot of people are either shocked, don't believe me, or shame me when I say I don't drink.

My mom assumed that I only liked girls because I never pointed out guys that I thought were cute but in reality I just didn't want to sound like a boy crazy teenage girl so I kept my thoughts to myself. I always said I didn't like girls when she would ask me but continuously denying it really bit me in the ass when I realized I was bisexual a couple years later.

I think the proper response to that attractive girl who thinks you are gay is, "I'm actually straight, and if you don't believe me, let's go out so I can prove it to you."

I used to get bullied in high school for "being gay" (I'm not) because I was and still am a female with short hair and who wears a lot of plaid shirts. God forbid I do/wear what I like. Once people make up their mind about your sexuality, there isn't much you can do to convince them otherwise.

When i was younger i had a period when i had black hair, wore a palestine scarf and had a pierced lip, it was the way people dressed at the time in my social sphere so i never thought about it until i was asked by a guy i had a crush on if i was gay.. It was so akward and strange that i felt the need to change (being 19 at the time). So i started buying "cute" clothes, pierced my ears, removed the lip piercing and the scarf and started acting more "girly". It. was. fucked. up!

Elliott! Love the new background. When I get "Are you gay?" my response is, "Oh I wish! That would be so awesome! I could dance like this (Commence twerking) and I could have confidence in myself and be the person I've always wanted to be. Alas, I am but a mere straight man who looks at his gay brethren with great envy and admiration." ... Sometimes it's just the twerking part.
