Some parents take the statement, “I’m gay” very seriously and can dramatically change because of it. So I’m not surprised by that, because it is against a lot of if not all religions to be anything but a heterosexual monogamous individual. Similarly, I was a teen when the AIDS crisis started and I was absolutely terrified. Having a born again mother and all the anti gay propaganda that was spewed on James Dobson radio, which played every day in our house, and not knowing anyone who was gay, I can certainly understand why the counselor went the ex gay route. I did too. Difference is I'm naturally difficult and I argued with the counselor about every so called cause of homosexuality. It's true what this man says, if you had any difficulty with either parent, then that's because you're "same-sex attracted" (was not allowed to say "gay", you're told you're straight but broken and that's why you think you're gay). If you had no problems with either parent, then you were molested, and if you say you weren't molested,then they counter with you just don't remember because it was so traumatic. Yet all that nonsense really stuck with me for YEARS. I constantly questioned whether he was right and I was wrong.

Agreed; I'm an entire homosexual and I've been asked that annoying question, "How do you find men attractive?" so many times. I mean...how do you even answer that? I guess it would have something to do with my brain being wired in a way that makes adult male attributes erotically stimulating to me and not adult female attributes but when I've used that as an answer, people still aren't satisfied. I've often found that the people who ask that question are assuming that everyone is naturally heterosexual but, at some point, I just woke up one day and was like, "You know...I think I'm going to start being attracted to men..." which, obviously, has been the case for exactly 0% of people. This question is just a troll question IMO. If you asked someone 'Why is your favorite color red?" or "Why is your favorite movie genre horror?" you run into the same wall. Why does anyone enjoy any of the things they do? I understand the fascination in figuring out what makes people like certain things (I love learning what makes people tick) but expecting them to answer that themselves is kind of a fool's errand.

This is how you express a healthy boundary. It is not a threat, or a punishment, or a commandment. It is a natural consequence as much as what goes up comes down that will happen if the other person does not behave responsibly.
I was so lost when he started talking about a "gay gene". is that really an argument that anti-lgbtq people are using? the arguments of nature versus nurture are so more complicated. that alone just makes me think the education system needs fixing, that someone actually thought sexuality is controlled by a specific gene.

Historically and (mostly in Middle Eastern countries) largely today, authority in Muslim countries is not incredibly accepting of homosexuality. Historically, Islamic (and also Christianity and other religions; this isn't specific to Islam) authority would have you killed for it. I am aware that today, this isn't nearly as widespread (e.g. your average Muslim today will be accepting, if not to the practice of homosexuality, to the people who are homosexual), however there were many stoning and otherwise killings of gay people with a religious justification.

One would certainly hope so. However, changes for the better can be fragile : look at the increasingly antagonistic stance taken against gay people in such countries as Brazil, Poland, Hungary, Russia etc etc. If we follow science and common sense we should be all right, except science has not always been followed in such cases as climate change or COVID, so we need to remain vigilant.

Why would anyone ask that? They have a gay law study group, which then immediately tried to recruit him. Again, voluntary admission, he didn't have to check 'straight' and lie, he never had to out himself. Scott messed up. Whoops. If you want to understand the truth & have respect for yourself & others this book will help. It also has, unlike the bible written over 2000 years ago by goat herders, an extensive bibliography. @@gaydubbbz8148 I mean, strictly speaking, it fell over 1000 years after it became Christian. Roman Empire fell in 1453, so anyone who says it 'fell' because of one thing or another is wrong, because it lasted for nearly 1,000 years after it 'fell'.

@@rlm2933 I think they meant that law is a field of study that requires you to memorise and quickly bring up lots of facts. But in this video: the fact that there's no "gay genes", sexuality is more complicated than this, the historical facts about the Roman Empire, facts about Christianity, guy is not even Christian himself I think but he can name saints and place their existence on a timeline just like that.
Not as impressed with his smarts or debating skills (both terrific), as I am with his passionate, quiet intensity, and his capacity to see life as it is. When he said he and his father never talk about his sexuality or relationships, then adds simply, "That's a shame." I sense a lot of hurt in him, but also a strong sense of self, and an iron character. I think any dad should be proud to have a son like Scott.
On one hand, I can see why he'd be upset, on the other I wouldn't wanna talk to my kids about their relationships either. Regardless of their sexual orientation. (And I'm happy my parents don't ask me about it, personally.) Edit: Add On.
@@moontobe1829 I agree it could be really awkward, but am thinking what Scott wanted/needed was just his dad’s acknowledgment. And maybe talk about the people he (the son) cares about. I don’t know, but the hurt that long pause and answer expressed seemed very real to me.
@@moontobe1829 I think its more of the fact that the father is denying part of who he is. It doesn't have to be specific details, but just casual how is so and so, who are you seeing these days, are they nice, etc. These things growing up are standard parenting and he's been denied that because of his father disliking his sexual orientation.
@Max Wailer It is natural, as similar behaviors have been observed in animals. Men who love other men, whether romantically or sexually have existed for a long time. Regardless of how you view the act, those people have all the rights to live out their lives for as long as they do not harm others in the process.

How can you say that, were all humans in the end whether were gay or have a religion or not, it's fucking cold to insult people whether their straight or gay. Imagine if you were in his situation, because of a career or degree you wanted, you had to be straight, but being gay was the only way you knew yourself. Even in the 50's my parents were perfectly aware their 10-year-old son was probably gay. Did they try to 'convert' him? No. They got him therapy to help him adjust, loved him for the rest of their lives, started their local PFLAG group, and accepted him, his SO, and his friends. I can't tell you the number of them who confided to me, his younger sibling, that they were rejected and shunned by their natal families, and that my parents helped heal their pain, but it was many, many more than there should have been.

infinightsky That day will come when heterosexual people realise that being straight is not it is all cracked up to be. Any sexual orientation is a burden to bear because that is what sexuality is. If one is honest and dares to read the right stuff. Until they do that, we will continue to read about heterosexual people screwing up their lives because they are ignorant of some basic facts. So no one needs to be complacent about their sexuality - gay or straight.

+Brian Tyler I think the most fascinating part of the story was how he recognized that nothing was wrong with him, but rather, something was mentally or emotionally wrong with the counselor, and that is why he held the beliefs that he held.

I was pointing out the fact that this young man was not at all angry or upset by this "counselor," because he recognized that this person likely held the views that he held because he had been emotionally and psychologically abused for being gay. Or did you just respond to the wrong person?
well, he can't really 'change'. That's not an option. All he can do is turn into the sort of sorry being he was interviewed by - or carry on his life as best he can.
