Pop-ups sometimes lead to harmful content.
The young man mentioned in the video is on his way to healing, but much of the damage was preventable with the right mix of technical solutions.
1. Never allow kids to use devices at night. You can define “night” in different ways. But darkness encourages risky behavior.
2. Never in the room. Again, you can define “never” to mean “except for homework,” but be careful. If allowed, then the door stays open and the screen of the device can be seen from the doorway.
3. Use a router with filters. An absolute must in any home 💯
4. Ensure browser settings that block most pop-ups are in place. See instructions below!
CHROME:
- On your computer, open Chrome.
- At the top right, click More
- Settings.
- Click Privacy and security
- Site Settings
- Pop-ups and redirects.
- Choose the option that you want as your default setting.
SAFARI (iPads, iPhones):
Settings - Safari - Block Pop-ups toggled “on”
And of course, wrap all of this in conversations about pop-ups. Explain what they are, what they can do, and it’s never their fault if a bad one “pops” up. Let me know if you have any questions.
Parenting with you!
Chris
