It turns out that there are actually different kinds of procrastinators and sometimes, what feels like procrastination might actually be an adaptive way to get work done efficiently.

I'm not saying we should stop being productive at all, but this society has made productivity a cult and a moral compass beyond all reason or necessity. It is sad that we are judging each other based on the level of anxiety this system triggers in us and how well we manage to suck it up and hide it.

Working long and hard is particularly insidious in North America and Japan. In most of the rest of the world, they take much longer lunches, have shorter work days, take much longer holidays, and stress out over work much less; they have a better work-life balance. (Or at least that used to be the case until American culture spread out and infected other places through media and trade.)

This has been studied and often demonstrably holds true. When we are working to make sense of a great deal of information, our insights change as we absorb it. Rumination can lead to clarity, while a clear deadline makes sure we don't get too bogged down in endless collection of information.

The thing about people who do stuff in a crunch also may be a way to fight against perfectionism - you only have so much time and you can't redo it so what you have is what you end with so there's less second-guessing of every minute choice.

Most of my procrastination during the week is from being too tired at the end of the day to get the drive to do it, or me being too busy with other stuff. It's on the weekends I really truly procrastinate because I think I deserve a break. ha

I've noticed that too. A similar alternative strategy for me is to work on stuff very very late at night. Only then I can get in a kind of trance state where my brain just doesn't have room for perfectionism and I can avoid it that way. Life would be so much easier with a switch to just turn the perfectionism off..

Having 5 hours to complete an essay is the greatest motivator ever. Sends my heart into palpitations. I'm one who gets easily distracted too. By sleep, by food, by the clock on the wall. But not a work. It's more at home. At work or school (which I still consider work) I am a machine. Always trying to keep busy and get it done so I can hopefully rest at home.

Taking a conscientious break to mentally recuperate is not the same as procrastinating and is equally as important as the work you are doing. I always complain to my coworkers how I feel bad I’m not more productive on my days off and part of it is definitely procrastinating on my part (though it’s more an issue that I procrastinate on my own home life by finding excuses to work similar to a high school student procrastinating on their essay by doing their math homework which is still procrastinating as he points out) but sometimes you need a reminder it’s okay to just relax as long as you stay on track.
@BlueSkies30
@BlueSkies30 4 года назад
@@Kartagoooo Clearly not a person with this issue this one here. Like it's that easy for those who do! Let me tell you a secret: It's not! If it was, people wouldn't have focusing issues. Sometimes the more you try to concentrate, the less you can think things through cause you're trying too hard, for example. Other people even have things like ADHD and need meds to be able to concentrate.
@BlueSkies30

@@munbun75 Oh I do that all the time. I always do the easy homework before the harder homework (in my case, I'd rather do the essay before the math homework lol). Or I do the quicker tasks first before the chores that take hours (wash the dishes before doing the housework).

I have to wonder how much of the anxiety-procrastination link is actually reverse causation. I have an anxiety disorder, and a large amount of my so-called procrastination is caused by failure to cope with the pressure of something that I need to get done. I failed out of college twice and took 7 years before I finally got my degree because of this; I understood the work, but I missed so many major assignments just because when the pressure of an assignment was too high (i.e. because it was complex, or I had many big assignments due at once, or it was a large percentage of my grade, etc.), I tended to just go on RU-vid or Facebook instead. I knew I should be doing other things -- and it nagged at the back of my mind the whole time -- but just the thought of having to do it had me nearly panicking, so I did less productive things instead. Note: I'm definitely not advocating this. I eventually succeeded with persistence, but please do not fail out of university by following my example :D I'm just wondering if the connection between anxiety and procrastination goes both ways :)
@BlueSkies30
@BlueSkies30 4 года назад
I come to a point sometimes where I find myself starring out into space instead of completing a difficult task. Not at school or work cause I just ask questions, but at home when I have no help I get distracted by every little thing. It's so annoying. But I was raised in a family that put pressure on good grades so my anxiety before things like tests are extremely high. On top of that, the distractions and stress add on lack of sleep (I lie awake at night thinking about grades for hours sometimes) and when I'm tired I have trouble getting motivated and well, just keeping my eyes open.

I brought this up to my therapist and she believes this is not necessarily a bad thing - by getting all of these things done it is clearing my mind and removing distractions from when I actually do sit down to study, and therefore I am more present and focused on the actual task.

I engage in all of the aforementioned types of procrastination, depending on the context. The most common time and reason for passive procrastination is that I'm tired but won't let myself go to bed until I've gotten certain things done. But I'm tired, so I need to muster up the energy to get it done. Of course, that means I end up staying up later and sleeping less, thus perpetuating the cycle. Not sure how to break out of it. It's hard to make myself do things when I'm tired.

To avoid bad procrastination at the beginning of a semester, I intentionally fake stress to feel the urge to be serious about my homework right at the start of it. It works well for be, because when the finals come, I'm ready, and I feel very less pressure, while relax, that at the beginning of the semester. Generally speaking, my worst enemy is to feel too relax at the beginning of a task. So, 1) fake stress to make sure to work hard right at the start of an important task; and 2) enjoy the feeling of stress relief due to being prepared and ready when the final touch of the task has arrived.

I don't have trouble with procrastination at school or work. There I just want to get the work done so I get it done. But at home I have more distractions and I just want to zone out or sleep - my energy is easy to tap out and when I walk through the door that signals to me relax time. So I used to spend a lot of time at the school library whether I needed to study or complete an essay, etc. Or I have the TV running in the background at home. Takes longer to complete what I need to do, but the TV actually keeps me going so long as what I'm watching isn't super interesting. Taking a nap before hitting the books helps my motivation too, though I'm sluggish for the half hour after wake up.

This is something I've needed to hear for a long time. I've always been a huge procrastinator. When I was younger it actually made me get bad grades because I had no drive to learn, but I've had very good grades ever since I found my own reasons to love learning and then started college a few years later. However, it takes a huge toll on my mental state. I always process it as passive procrastination which leaves me on a constant roller-coaster of self-doubt and wondering why I can't seem to bring myself to sit down and work, but I always get all my work done on time anyway. The problem is that I always PLAN to do my work right away, but if it's not due for a week then I'll only be able to bring myself to take a glance at it until a couple days before it's due. I know a big part of my learning process is passive thinking, so taking that first look gets the gears turning in my mind so I'm prepared to do the work when I actually decide to do it. The only problem with this system is I've never had an assignment that was longer term than a couple weeks, and I always worry that I'll underestimate the amount of work required for a project and procrastinate myself out of being able to get it done.
@BlueSkies30
@BlueSkies30 4 года назад
I'm the opposite. I was always quick to get my work done as a kid and got great grades. But now in college I struggle with motivation and in most classes I end up passing out of pure luck it feels like a lot of the time. It's all about how difficult it is for me. If it comes to me easy, I've got my homework done as fast as I can write it up. But if it's difficult I delay it for other things, sit down and question my abilities, and delay it some more. If teachers weren't patient with me and gave me hours of guidance, I'd have never made it as far as I have in school. I don't like doing work if I'm not sure of myself and I tend to overthink things. I end up staring at walls when I don't understand over trying to work out a problem, which is in part why I suck at anything beyond basic math.
@Nofxthepirate
@Nofxthepirate 4 года назад
@@BlueSkies30 That self doubt is a big part of my procrastination too. There have been times where I spent multiple hours on a single math problem, looking up RU-vid videos and reading and re-reading the section from the book. Then once I have finally figured out that problem I usually find that I understand the concept a lot better. I usually still get stuck on a few more problems but I make it through. It's taken me a very long time to learn how to accept the fact that when I pick up my math book I'm about to feel like a big dumb worthless idiot for several hours. I've heard all those sayings like "you aren't learning if you aren't making mistakes" but it's still really difficult to sit with that feeling of worthlessness during the struggle. But, every time I manage to complete a difficult assignment like that, it's just one more thing I can look back on the next time I feel like an idiot and remind myself that I've gotten this far so I must not be doing so bad after all even though it feels like I'm a failure. I still struggle a lot with self worth with my schoolwork but I am slowly learning to look back on past successes as a way to keep me going and to remember that failure and struggle is unavoidable in college, I just can't let it halt my progress. I'm really glad you have great professors that take the time to work with you, I've had a couple of them whose help has pulled me back from almost giving up.

I use the triage method. I assess how critical a task is and rank them accordingly. This way if I don't get to something it's not a big deal

Usually, laboratory results procrastinated just like human. They did not even bother coming out until my internship report is about to due. I literally had to wait for 3 months for my plants to grow 1 inch of roots. while I was focusing on writing the reports, nothing happened was worthy to be recorded. Then when the report was about to due, the results finally came out.

One thing he didn't mention was that some problems are complex enough that our subconscious mind can be a real help in finding a workable solution. This is what you're probably doing when you look at the problem from many different angles, then go off and do something else. Very often, you'll have an "aha" moment while doing something unrelated. Other times it just puts you into a bigger time crunch near the deadline, so it doesn't always work. Maybe "Use with caution" can apply to more than just pharmaceuticals.

I'm a nonproductive active procrastinator. I do meaningless things until I really need to do the thing I need to do. If I just get started I have no problem to keep going until I'm done with it. Sometimes I manage to trick myself by telling myself to just do it for 5 min and then I can take a break. Often ends up with doing the whole assignment.

Active procrastination/arousal delay sounds like some form of adrenalin addiction to me. The need to feel that burst of adrenalin to increase one's focus and crunch the task down into the smallest amount of time possible.

I procrastinate when I need entertainment like when I am stressed or sad and such when I do this it ends up making a feedback loop because I get stressed from not doing my work so watch videos which ends up getting me more stressed and so on

Some people really do thrive under pressure, or at the very least, prefer to delay thing until absolutely necessary because they min-max the cost-benefit ratio of doing some task now instead of all the other things they could do now vs doing it later. Personally, there are a lot of things I that I leave until forced to do, and while I'm not happy about having to do them at all, I usually feel extra good after doing them then. It just works for me and always has. 🤷

Well I don't think I fall into either field, and I think many people are alike. I procrastinate and still get anxious about it, but spinning the task constantly in my head. So when I actually go to work, I tried many options in my head before, and my idea how to tackle a problem is already quite narrow. Which enables me to get the work done rather quick. The problem with this, is that many people don't particularly like that approach since it might look pretty effortless. Well it's not, it's just less on paper, more in my brain.

I’m not sure if I’m an active or passive procrastinator. I leave school assignments for myself to do a day or two before the due date (procrastinate) and hand it in feeling like I could have done way better. I feel terrible about it... but then when I get my grade back it is high above the average. So, I’m not sure if I really need to change my habits.

Delaying tasks to create stress/pressure is totally a thing that I do. I cannot work on a loose schedule. If something that takes a day to complete is due in two weeks, it might as well not exist. But give me a rapidly approaching deadline and I become super productive and organized. Is it stressful? A bit, yeah - but it also gives me a lot of satisfaction to get things done. And when I have basically nothing important to do, I feel sad, bored, and subdued. I'd rather work a 55 hour work week than relax all day. So is it procrastination? I'd say so, cause I could still be doing something better than watching cat videos. However, it's very hard for me to set goals for myself or do things when I technically don't have to. I get my work done, but it's much harder with personal projects and hobbies. Wish there was a way round it, but I haven't found one yet.
