Passing by a mule train, losing my food to ravens, and other adventures in the Grand Canyon on day 1 of my solo backpacking trip. This was filmed in March 2023, when huge snowstorms shut down the North Rim, abridging my plan to hike rim-to-rim-to-rim (R3).

A few years ago I bought a bunch of Indian Rice Grass seeds to plant on my place in SE Utah. So I went around with a shovel, dug a bunch of holes, threw in seeds, and then covered the holes. I think I put in a bit of water also. Within a day or two I went back around and all the seeds had been dug back up and disappeared. Probably the ravens sat on top of a power pole and watched me, chuckling to themselves, "Look at that fool feeding us..." Turns out after I chopped all the weeds and allowed what Rice Grass plants were already here grow, that after a few more years I have about 50% Rice Grass and about the same of Drop-Seed Grass (or whatever it's officially called). And now the Rice Grass plants are huge. Birds come zooming in to land on the plants in late spring and gobble up the seeds, spreading them more than I ever did. So those Ravens were watching you from some vantage point just waiting for you to disappear. I hiked into Chesler Park in the Needles district of Canyonlands NP one time and climbed on top of a boulder for a snack time. Within a minute or two a Raven landed beside me barely 4 feet away so I took a photo of it looking at my food, none of which I gave it. Point being, when they hang our around people they get "spoiled" by easy pickings, and you just happened to be the "fool of the moment." (You should wear sunglasses! Having blond hair and light-colored eyes.)

Thumbs up for the Day 1 adventures. I appreciate how you filmed and narrated the experience. I'm betting you can cure your knee issue, by getting out of the hiking shoes, and transitioning into barefoot style shoes, like VivoBareFoot Primus Trail FG. You'll be amazed at how much better the knee feels. For flare-ups like you were having on the descent, an anti-inflammatory like Celebrex is a miracle. You'll get a similar, but much shorter response from 1 Tylenol taken with 1 Motrin (1 acetaminophen and 1 ibuprofen) I started backpacking in the Canyon in 2007, and running those trails in 2015. I go back every year, usually 2 or 3 times. Vids on the channel. I enjoyed your shots of it with snow on top!

I had heard about the squirrels but had not seen anything about the ravens! We will be on our guard for them. We will be staying at Phantom Ranch at the end of August. I thought it was funny when you said 70 was hot. 70 is bordering on sweater weather for us Texans. I'd rather be hot and lay down in the creek than be cold.

70 is much hotter than it seems in the Canyon. With the sun reflecting off of everything, and working hard hiking, it feels more like 90. And I live in a place that regularly gets over 100.
