In this video I'm at a familiar location to shoot a subject at three different times of day in three different types of light.

Great job, I think all three shots have their own special features, but obviously, the sunset shot has the greatest impact.

I was surprised how good a midday shot can be. Absolutely loved the warm colours of sunset. Reminds me of an album cover. You and the two Andrews continue to inspire me. Cheers

Thanks Robbie! Yeah I quite like how the midday shot brings out the dilapidated nature of this place... but yeah hard to beat that sunset :) Thanks so much for the kind words!

Another good display of how light affects an image. The sunrise really lights up the building; the midday adds to the sense of decay and desolation but the winner is the sunset which lights up the surrounds beautifully. Nicely done :)

Cheers Claire! :) yeah I’m pretty happy with how those three shots turned out. Hard to beat the sunset but I like what you say about the midday shot - sure does portray the decay of that place.

lol no contest, you can't beat a colour bomb sky ! ;) Love the triptych conversation at the start and end, very clever. That spot looks like street art central in Freo, must hit it next time I'm over. :)

In order of preference: Sunset, Midday, Sunrise. Nothing beats the drama of the sunset in these three. Of course if you had shot from the other side of the building, sunrise and sunset would be swapped in my list.
@RichardLefroy
@RichardLefroy 5 лет назад
Yeah hard to beat that sunset. I have actually got a pretty cool sunrise shot there too once upon a time when there was some high cloud around (still doesn’t really compare to that sunset though 😉).

Thanks Richard! Yeah I think the high contrast works pretty well for that type of grungy scene. Don’t think I can go past the sunset shot though. I’ve taken this image a bunch of times but I haven’t tackled a night shot there yet... not sure how it would turn out but I’ve got it in mind to try it one day :)
@nightscapeimages.richard
@nightscapeimages.richard 5 лет назад
I think it would look awesome at night. Can you get a south easterly perspective on it ...?? If so you'll get the milky way core rising in the next few months. Maybe a whisker of moonlight would help to light the building as well. Anyway, great work mate.

Great video. Among my favs. Very clever editing. I think you were right in saying that there is not hard and fast rule as to right time of day. I tend to try to stick to early or late in the day, but have managed to get some decent shots during the day. One can never tell. Stay flexible with the prevailing conditions.
@RichardLefroy
@RichardLefroy 5 лет назад
Cheers Adrian! I had fun putting this one together - glad you liked it! Yeah I’m guilty of discounting anything other than sunrise/set most of the time... there’s certainly options out there but you’ve gotta pick your subjects wisely I reckon. This place actually quite suits the harsh light of midday I think :) Thanks!!

This was beautifully done Richard! My hat goes off! Such a strong subject and clear composition. It would work in any conditions! Especially maybe during a rainy storm.. :) You need to head back again hehe! I do however think I prefer the last of the three, although If there had been a fourth with bad weather.. :) Again, terrific video!

Thanks so much Marco! Yeah that evening just exploded - couldn’t have hoped for anything better really!! I was shooting on a Nikon crop sensor, quite wide at 11mm. Two exposures blended (one for the foreground and building, one for the sky) ISO 100, f11.

Hi Richard, When you shot that power station the last time, 18 or more months was it? That was my first subscribed video I watched of you..you've been doing great things! The sunset image is my favourite. It has real character with those fences and graffiti..and the colour sky just adds to it. An image that could be printed up big .

For me sunset always wins (silly romantic I suppose) but as a travel photographer if there are 5 things in a location one wants to shoot it and if all of them need to be at sunset it means staying at the location for 5 days which is not always possible. So I'm forced to choose which of the 5 I'll shoot at different times of the day. But if I had a free hand it would be sunsets all the way (plus I'm not a particularly morning person :-) Tnx for haring and the triptych at the start/end is very cleaver. I also think this video better illustrates the point (compared to your previous one with the jetty). Carry on the good work mate.
@RichardLefroy
@RichardLefroy 5 лет назад
Ah yes wouldn’t it be great to shoot what you want whenever you want. A luxury we don’t always have. I’d imagine it’d be a bit stressful always having to sacrifice certain shots and just settle on one or two, especially given you may never be back to a location ever again? Thanks for watching!!
@dimitristsagdis7340
@dimitristsagdis7340 5 лет назад
Richard Lefroy Tnx Richard, the not being able to go back is certainly the hardest bit to stomach. What do you do? I just pick a couple which may have some potential of being stellar and shoot them at the optimum time and then work the other locations around them in the hope I could get something that’s good enough. In reality though these are just scouting missions and if one truly stellar they may need to work a location for weeks if not years.
@RichardLefroy
@RichardLefroy 5 лет назад
Yeah it’s tough. Honestly I tend to try to stay away from having overly set plans when I’m travelling and instead just have some rough ideas of what I want to see... then just shoot wherever I am whenever I’m there. Not the best way to try to get “THE” shot... but it keeps things loose and keeps the pressure off. Then again, I’m only ever shooting for fun and don’t have expectations to get something specific 😉
@dimitristsagdis7340
@dimitristsagdis7340 5 лет назад
Tnx, maybe 'loose' is way to be; I too mainly shoot for myself but still when I travel far, carry all the gear, ... I want to return home with the goods even if it is just for me. Maybe I need to learn to be more 'loose' :-)

Hey mate, found this video from Andrew Dawes. After watching I subscribed, great video man. I like all the photos but for different parts of each photo. My favourite is the 3rd (sunset). But, have you thought of combining the three photos using the best parts of each? Would love to see it. Anyway mate, great stuff, look forward to more 👍
