When Should you Wear a Tie?  

My dressing up philosophy is "always be ready for a surprise wedding", so I wear a necktie almost every day. Only times I don't wear one are in very casual environments and when I'm not wearing a jacket.

England has become very causal nowadays, and even as a surgeon I am one of the very few who still wears a suit and tie. The question is more when would you not wear a tie, and the answer is when you are specifically aiming to be casual. As I would generally wear a shirt with a collar, the dependent factor is the trousers. If they have a crease, wear a tie, if not (causal chinos or jeans) then don’t.

I'm a Generation X/ Millennial latchkey kid, and am not at all what one might deem 'old-fashioned', but I have always appreciated the style and grace of my grandparents. They both were incredibly attractive, quite famously a couple of head turners in their day. When they entered an event or gathering, they not only stole the spotlight, but the entire show. Now fast forward to my adolescent years, and the dating scene pickings were far less 'debonair'; rather, I liken the style of the day to the dinning of denim sleeping bags, one for each leg, precariously fastened with a cheap swathe of synthetic 'pleather' (I shudder simply typing this), and topped with an equally synthetic assortment of team jerseys, logo-emblazoned tees, or the questionably-named 'wife beater', the tolerability of which directly corelated with it's level of cleanliness and state of repair. It is perhaps for these reasons that upon stumbling across your channel via the benevolent algorithmic gods, it was as if the heavens above had opened and I saw what true perfection could entail. Although I am of course being somewhat hyperbolic with my description, I did want to extend a note of appreciation for your channel and your embodiment of the many fine qualities that make it such a success. It truly is a treat to interject a dose of such effortless sophistication into my day and for that, sir, I thank you. Subscribed. 😊

Let me tell you, it will be a strange feeling at first when people unconsciously turn to look at you when you are smartly dressed. Even simply wearing a sports jacket you will turn heads.

My personal rule is if I'm wearing separate jacket and trousers - no tie. Matching suit jacket and trousers - tie.

Joe I can’t really claim full knowledge in the genesis of the necktie. However neckwear has been with us pre-Victorian era when they wore scarves, a broche, or some sort of neckwear to cover the naked neck PROFF
