As an Alaskan resident, I feel like this video does a fair representation of the facts. Some people are going to comment about "making" these dogs run, or other claims of animal cruelty. While that happens, it is extremely rare, and mushers found guilty of an offense are pretty much ostracized from the sport. These dogs LOVE to run. They are selected from litters at about 6 weeks old when mushers see the dog has what it takes. If a musher doesn't pace their dogs, they will run themselves to death. Thank you for the quality video!

I can attest to this at least a bit; my brother's dog is a Husky/Golden Lab mix. She isn't stocky enough to be an actual sled dog, but she's very hard to walk on a leash because she just loves to pull as hard as she can; she is a sweet dog that will stay next to you for the most part, but to her anything resembling a harness means pull! She also loves the cold and the snow, and will gleefully dive into snow banks for hours on end. I actually got to visit her in Nome and she seems to love it there, though it very rarely reaches the -40 Balto had to deal with, Nome is usually in the 0-15 f range in the winter; it's the interior that gets really cold.

I've never met a sled dog, but I've met many working dogs. It's ALWAYS their choice - more than that, it's their passion. They live for it. When my dad took his two on week-long hikes, they had their own backpacks and carried their own supplies just like everyone else. ♡

Balto was my favorite movie. My parents hated it. When I was young, back when this thing called "blockbuster" existed, when you go to a brick-and-morter store and rented these things called VHS (okay no more of that joke it's annoying) Yeah when I was young I literally rented it every single time I was allowed to rent a movie.

Thx, I"m Alaskan but never heard the entire story. Once a year while I was growing up the public broadcast channel in Alaska would cover the race but since it was the late 80's most of the time it was just a camera mounted on a tree pointed at a portion of the trail so about every day or two a sled would appear on the camera, get bigger than pass it. Took around 2 minutes for the 24 to 48 hour wait.

One of my favorite Diptheria stories comes from Anne of Green Gables. Apparently, diptheria and another illness in infants were called "croup" and "false croup" One of the treatments for Diptheria croup was ipecac. Normally, you'd never give an emetic for croup, so this bit of the story doesn't make sense at first. When we eradicated Diptheria with vaccines, we forgot this knowledge.
