When Social Media Doctors Get Mixed Up With NFTs

The perils of being a medical influencer... I'm not saying this is an NFT scam. But the pre-test probability is high. With the added bonus of being an antivax fundraiser...oh dear.
I can't actually recall how I found this, I just stumbled on it on twitter and had no idea what I was watching. The videos at the time had about 100 views each, the first one has now ticked past 180k views. One MIGHT suggest that I had secretly invested in these NFTs and I've just given them free publicity...muahaha. Well not really, as they're not on sale yet. Plus I'm not that smart anyway.
Sign up for my free newsletter: medlife.substack.com/
I hope it's evident that I am not seeking drama and am working on the assumption that most/all of these medfluencers didn't get the full story, but I'd probably recommend others give NFTs a wide berth. Wanting to raise money for charity is a noble goal, but there are ways to do it without all this scammy overlay. NFT minting is ultimately a way of raising money from gullible people who receive very little in exchange. If the goal is delivering healthcare to remote areas, again the web3 angle seems unnecessary.

Medlife Crisis it’s surreal. It’s gotten to the point where a lack of profit-generating mechanisms is more conspicuous than the ubiquitous extra revenue-streams that keep Medics and their channels afloat. I immediately knew that the autism charity they were partnering with would be shady when they said 'donating to help autism', cause, like, unless you're donating to somewhere that helps provide access to support for autistic people (those kinds of charities are usually extremely small and local btw), how tf do you 'help autism'. And usually groups that think we all need the same kind of 'help' are those who think we really need to be cured, soooooooo yeah, not at all surprised they partnered with the underdog version of autism speaks.

I, and many others, have been speaking up about this. The causes they say they'll invest in are questionable to say the least. The whole reason common people don't have access to proper healthcare is because the system promotes this endless grifting. The NFT market (and any market for that matter) primarily thrive on greed. (Especially this one; Greed and ignorance.) This is no charity, it's a glorified pyramid scheme disguised as a one. They are no different, this is not accessible to you, and they did very poor research about their causes and their means of getting there. They do not plan to stop or slow down, no matter how much you'll educate them.
@daanwilmer
@daanwilmer 2 года назад
I'm not sure this is indeed a pyramid scheme, as most NFTs are promoted to be worth much because they'll be worth more (and also you'll get an ugly jpeg), but in this case the token actually seems to give access to healthcare (though probably they're still counting on the value increasing). Still, since these tokens are publicly tradable it's basically additional healthcare for those who can offer the most money - because apparently the rich should buy all the doctors and the poor should hope for some charity from the 20% of royalties when one of these tokens gets traded (note: this is 20% of royalties, not 20% of sell price).

Honestly there are already limitations with telehealth even without the obvious like physical issues and emergencies. I can't get a refill for my ADHD meds via telehealth - the main provider in my country refuses to do it and says I need to go to a walk-in and hope they'll do it. If I had that option available in my area, I wouldn't be using telehealth would I? I've heard another telehealth program in the US recently also stopped prescribing stimulants and a ton of people across the country are now left hanging. What else are they saying "nah bro" to? Overall it's a slippery slope and definitely not something I'd see as a reliable option at this point in time. Also there's the whole NFT scam part.

Couple of the doctors on the "meet the metaverse affiliates" page are not medical doctors. For example, Kojo Safro is a DNP (doctor of nursing for those outside the states) who makes big bucks on online consults. There are a few states where it is illegal to misrepresent yourself in a healthcare setting as an MD, wonder if they'll catch flack for this
@drkojosarfo
@drkojosarfo 2 года назад
Three things. 1). I'm not affiliated w/ MetaDocs 2). Wherever you see Dr. Kojo Sarfo, you also see "DNP" there so there's never been any misrepresentation as an MD anywhere online. If you ever find that, let me know (heads up - you won't find that). and 3). I don't do online "consults", so I'm not sure where you saw that I make "big bucks" off online consults.... Hope you have a wonderful day brotha.

nearly all “projects” like this (decentralised autonomous organisation that is controlled through NFT-tokens, promising some kind of service or benefit), feel like bad April fools jokes. They are all as bad as this. “pay now and we promise to buy an island and build a house for you there, next to the casino”. This would be a long shot even if they already had the island. They don’t. Also casinos would be illegal there, if they bought it. “Pay us and we will make a movie”. They failed to secure the copyrights to the script they wanted - instead they just bought a physical copy of the script. “pay us and we pinky promise to start working on this half-fleshed out idea we have, without any real expertise, own funding, industry contacts, or really anything past a discord server”. They all sound like southpark episodes where Cartman has an idea, miraculously gets a chance to realise it, but it flops and he ends up just scamming everyone involved. Because that’s what they have done, every single time!

Software nerd here- With Facebook's past ethical hellscape, I feel extremely uncomfortable about any medical information being brought up in software owned by Meta. We have secure telehealth options set up for a reason. While I would be happy if it would allow people to seek affordable medical advice, there's only so much a doctor can help with remotely. I was a bit weirded out when one of the doctors mentioned getting a second opinion on shoulder surgery remotely. Then there's the dermatology one. Not being able to examine your patient in person has limitations. I do not see this as a solid option for people that don't already have telehealth as an option through their insurance (US). Then there is the ethics of NFTs and crypto in general. I'm also nervous about patients believing that if a medical influencer has a lot of followers, that it correlates to experience. I don't doubt the doctors that agreed to this are unfamiliar with NFTs or haven't thought about potential privacy issues and just wanted to be part of something new that also involves charities. This just all rubs me the wrong way.

I used to like Dr Youn because of the “if plastic surgeons were brutally honest” series. Over time I got tired of the constant brand promoting, and discovered not so nice things about what he would promote. I just think he dropped the ball because he was famous on TikTok. Robert Tolppi made a good video voicing his concerns about TikTok plastic surgeons. There are also some people in this comment section that talk about valid criticisms of Dr Youn. JAR Gantuan’s comment and reply thread for example.

I don't care if they're famous or not. Just matters that they listen to me and work *with* me to find something that works. Doctors getting involved in social media seems like a huge ethics violation that no one saw or took seriously. I'm glad to see you calling this behavior out and being transparent about taking sponsorships because it brings in money, which presumably makes it easier for you to call this shit out. Highly respect channels and creators that are transparent about how much a sponsor gives and takes sponsors only from services they themselves would use.

I am convince NFTs don't need to exist. Something has value so long as people decide it has value; NFTs are not inherently valuable at all. I have a lot to say, but to keep it short, this game is basically hot potato and you need to pass the potato on before it blows up in your face. To do so, you need to make the potato seem appealing to the next sucker; you need to make them want to catch it. The only people benefiting here are the founders of the hot potato at ground 0. Hence the extravagant white papers and launches. I am sure there may be some good use for NFT tech that we cannot understand right now, but as it stands its a scam and there are better ways to implement "Tokens of Uniqueness" (CSGO skins anyone?).
@microwave221
@microwave221 2 года назад
I believe this is called something like "biggest idiot theorem" where you buy something that you know has no inherent value, but believe that you can find a bigger idiot to sell it to for a profit. That idiot in turn looks for an even bigger idiot, up until the biggest idiot makes the scene and it all starts crashing down. Unfortunately, this can apply to a lot more than just nfts, any speculation on something that has no intrisic value essentially works on a similar mechanism

For some patients it might be helpful to be able to get a remote consultation with a specialist doctor outside your local area, if you have a rare condition, or unusual symptoms that are proving difficult to diagnose. NFTs, social media follower counts, and vague promises to be charitable, aren't a good start for setting up a healthcare system.
