At 16-17 years old playing for Cruzeiro he looked like a veteran playing in the league for years, at 18 years old for Barcelona he looked like a superstar, at 19-20 years old he reached a level that nobody reached, he created dribbles, his speed and strength were merged, only injuries could stop him so that he played 60% of what he knew and still made history. Ronaldo "Phenomenon", The Unrivaled.
@Vetrus Dumbo thinks Cristiano can only score tap-ins and pens. How old are you kid? 13? His peak isn't as high as R9's, but saying that he was only a good goalscorer is just disrespectful
I'm a Juventus and an Ajax fan and Ronaldo Nazario is the only player who would literally inspire fear on me and send shivers down my spine every time he had the ball near the area. Every time he grabbed the ball and started running I'd say something along the lines of: "Oh, here comes Ronaldo. We're fucked." Prime Ronaldo Nazario was unreal, otherworldly, literally unstoppable.
The day he came back agains Lazio and again torn his knee, it was like watching a friend having an accident. All Lazio players were in complete shock, his teammates were crying. Ronaldo belonged to all football fans.
Funny to hear that. As a brazilian, my feelings were the exact opposite. If Ronaldo was playing, I knew that chances of Brazil loosing the game were very small. And every time he had the ball, I was confident that he could make something out of it.

He was playing like prime Cr7 and Messi as a teenager. This in multiple leagues and international football. Kids these days don't understand how detonating R9 was before his Injuries. And then even after 2 full acl ruptures he managed to win a Ballon d'or playing at half his powers. To me he reached the highest peak of individual ability I ever saw. What a monumental talent the gods of football haved robbed us of.
@@GuilhermeSantos-hd6kl Are you serious bro? Ronaldo at 18 (when he played at Barca) was the best player in the league and considered the best player in the world.
@@Kanfachan he went to Barcelona at 20. He played for psv before. And that was his best season. Its what I'm saying, people talk about him like he did anything close to the goats. Statistically he didn't. He had potential for it, but he in reality didn't do it. He was amazing before early 20s. After that he was gone. He peaked at 20 21.
@@GuilhermeSantos-hd6klyou surely mustn’t be old enough to have actually seen him play then. In his day he was by far the best player in a time with countless other phenomenal players. He honestly probably made the opposition fans even more scared than Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo did.
This Ronaldo won 2 world cup titles and 1 as a runner up. Not bad for a soccer player who never played in a world cup past his 30's nor 40's years of age.
My grandmother was always a football fanatic, in 93/94 she invited me to watch a Ronaldinho, yes he was called that, before he became Phenomenon. It was a magical time and I thank God I spent my teenage years watching the best 9 of all time.
My dad always tells me the same story (like most fathers do). The year I was born (1993) he went to Estadio Centenario to watch the second leg of Nacional vs Cruzeiro for the Supercopa Libertadores and he says that even though Ronaldo was only 16-years-old at that time, he was by far the best player on the pitch. He said that he nearly single-handedly eliminated us because besides scoring, he also had a kick in the last few minutes that hit the crossbar. And luckily, Nacional were able to win in the penalty shootout. But obviously Ronaldo went on to become the greatest #9 of all time after that. He truly was The Phenomenon. 🙏
Hmmm I don't know.. Messi at 19 was pretty phenomenal himself. I just watched the el clasico in the early 2000's I believe around 05 or 6 where 19 year old Messi scores a hatrick against Madrid. Unbelievable player... but then again.. I only witnessed R9 from 02 onwards so what do I know 😅
He still is. I did not consider longevity as a skill. It's not something that you just think about, learn or train. It was out of his control. Considering what a player can control, he only behind Pelé.
Always said the reason Messi and Ronaldo stayed at the top so long was due to have managers who didn't rush them. Ronaldo had Fergi Messi at Pep. Both managers made sure they kept grounded and kept them out of the media spot light as best as they could when they were in there teens.Barca even set up a training program for Messi to stop him getting injured so much. Ronaldo had so much pressure on him from the get go. Played so many games by the time he was 27 he was burnt out.
Yh he had hyperthyroidism I think it was this made him gain weight very fast and ts very hard to lose it with this he actually got diagnosed with it at psv I can't I'magine how hard it was for him to stay in shape
Also the vast improvements in sports science which is a double edge sword really. 30-32 was considered past prime and thinking about retirement age for the average footballer. Now it's 34-38. On the down side, most every player have the same built and movement now. It's kind of mundane and robotic even. I like the unpredictability of players and how they come in all forms and sizes back 30, 20. even 10 years ago. Tanks like Vieri, R9, Batistuta, and Viduka. Lanky elegant gazelles like Pires, Van Basten. Football need to bring back rules that don't always favour the attacking player. I get that it's exciting to see goals. But the overall quality really takes a hit. Better defenders and better rules that favours the defensive side of the game elevates the quality of attacking players. At least that's what i feel. And stop making the ball lighter and lighter! When was the last time we actually saw somebody score a chip/lob goal? I can't even recall
The younger generation won't fully understand just how good this man was even after multiple ACL injuries he still went on to win a world cup no one even came close to him people think haaland is good which of course he is but R9 was just on a complety different level
@@1607Adi_Manz that’s a pessimistic view, but granted fair point. From hindsight, the research and technology was still playing catch up. Many recovery techniques was not available to Ronaldo at that time. When Ronaldo was at Barcelona, dial up internet would be out of reach for majority of the population on the planet. The football boots were heavier, ball was heavier, the physiotherapy was limited. You need to factor all these details in, otherwise, your comment provides little to no depth in your argument. Therefore, it’s another uneducated guess and there are one in one hundred these days. You could even argue one in ten.
@@1607Adi_ManzObviously you never watch Ronaldo the"ET" play before... Normaly any great strikers must have a good hunting instinct but 99% of them lack of something.. And Ronaldo had all : fast but very technique, strong and great hunting instinct, even legendary DF like Maldini or Canavaro had a very hard times to deal with the "E.T" in his prime like the times he in Bacca. And maybe you don't know that before 98 foot ball rules was different : DF can play very brutal because tackles from behind is allow, that's the reason why so many great players suffered injuries and retired at very young age, and Ronaldo still win a world cup after years of injuries - that's how great he's
I remember hearing about him and then seeing him with the national team at the World Cup in the USA, watching him at their practices at their US training location on the campus of Santa Clara University in California while the WC was on. There were alot of Brazilians in the stands during these practices, and near the end of these sessions, they would do a honor roll call, individually yelling out in unison each player's name until they acknowledged the crowd. I remember when it Ronaldo's turn and he acknowledge the crowd, he got one of the largest responses from those in attendance. The things he was doing in the intra-squad scrimmages during these practices were touches of pure class!
Sandro Mazzola (Inter Milan legend) said “He was wondrous. He was mesmerizing. He could play on any pitch. He had incredible speed, strength, power, skill, ability and technique.”
Crazy how with all those injures he still became one of the greatest of all time. The player Brasil will never ever replace the number 9 shirt. There will never be a striker like Ronaldo.
Dude, every time you do one of these videos you make me emotional about the player and the situation. I mean, the story telling is simply incredible! I can’t wait for the next one. Also, it sounds like Ronaldo was just unlucky with his body and routines. Imagine him now a days with a top class dietician and physio…it would be terrifying 😱

If he'd have had the length of career that Messi or Ronaldo have had and not plagured by injuries. This debate over Messi or Ronaldo would never have happened. Nazario De Lima was something very, very special.
@@nickrosstech Great players are often the catalysts for needed rules changes. The red and yellow cards were introduced because of how many flagrant fouls were committed on Pele at the 1966 World Cup. Pele was kicked so many times, he swore he'd never play international Football again. FIFA knew they needed to do something to protect the players (the investments of clubs/profitable business) and so they came up with the cards.
Thanks God I could see him playing a few games for Cruzeiro, especially the match against Atletico MG, our biggest rival, where he scored a hat trick, I'm Brazilian from Minas Gerais -Belo Horizonte and a big fan of Cruzeiro and today Ronaldo is the Cruzeiro owner.
Yep. Plus a combination of that level of speed and agility - it simply doesn't mix amazingly *past a certain physical point* with the specific playing demands of football (check all the superfast players' careers for evidence ; )
They put too much muscle at him as soon as he went to Europe. It ruined his bone and tissue structure. At Inter he was huge for his age, clearly on some enhacement.
I still remember how i became fan of barcelona/ronaldo fan. I was a kid, turned on tv flipping through channels, came across a football game. it was Barcelona vs Valencia ronaldo scored a hattrick, as a kid I was blown away. thinking to myself how can someone score 3 times in a match lol
You know what? That Valencia team were monsters, only there to destroy everything and everyone on the pitch. Was it that game where Ronaldo was faster with the ball than the Valencia players and he just went through 3 defenders and scored? Just unbelievable and it’s impossible to reproduce that goal.
Im born in 93 and started watching football properly in 2002.. just when Brazil won the world cup and when Ronaldo had just joined Real Madrid a few years ago. He was the best striker in the world at the time easily and arguably the best player at one point. It was only when I hit my late teens around 2012 did i discover that the Ronaldo i watched at Madrid was a shadow of his former self at Inter and Barca. I didnt know about his injuries that should have ended his career in the 90s, it just goes to show how good he was to be playing at a level even higher than Thierry Henry and yet not even be at full potential. Blew my mind.
That match at 0:48!! Quarter-final of the 1993 SUPERCOPA in Montevideo against my team, NACIONAL... I was 11 y/o, and can remeber as it was yesterday... the day i saw this beast!!. I can assure you that everyone that were in the CENTENARIO Stadium that day remember him... Cruzerio had also Renato Gaúcho, Careca,.. INSANE GAME! (btw, we end up winning by penalties)
Unfortunately, him getting injured was inevitable from the very beggining. He only lasted that much but he will always be remembered as the most terrifying attacker of all times. SImply fenomeno

What an awesome video! Growing up as an Ajax fan in the 90s, Ronaldo is still the best player I've ever witnessed in my life. He was simply unstoppable when he entered the Dutch league at the age of 17. At that time, Ajax had unbelievable young talents such as Seedorf, Davids, Kluivert and Kanu but Ronaldo was a class on his own. Still we won it all ❌❌❌
I remember as a little kid watching the 2002 World Cup , Ronaldo got me into watching football. That was towards the end of his run but it still dope to see live
Never have I seen a footballer as fast and explosive as R9, quick and strong off the dribble, lethal from anywhere on the pitch, air or ground. Capable of creating his own chances on goal. Sadly, his knees could keep up with his Fenómeno skills.
Ronaldo after his first serious knee injury during the 95/96 season at PSV, his doctor said he lost 30% of mobility and speed so we never saw the real Fenomeno.
Fun fact: Cruzeiro went through one of the most serious political and financial crisis in the history of south american in the last years. The club was relegated for the first time in the history, was on the verge of bankrupicy and stayed at the second division for three seasons untill Ronaldo became the first owner of a football club in Brasil, saving Cruzeiro from the certain death. As a Cruzeiro fan, it’s such a beautiful history to see the boy who got his first chance to shine at Cruzeiro and went on to dominate europe and the who world, now came back to save us
Only those who grew up in those days and loved Futbol could understand how good he was. I mean, I as Argentinian I was afraid of him. The envy and admiration when our national teams played against was significant. Some people compared him to Cristiano Ronaldo, and I honestly think he was one of the best, but Ronaldo Nazario was on another level. Just like Ronaldinho, that magic can't be compared to anyone else. He was lethal, fast, tall, skillful... an amazing player. For me the best 9 ever.
He's a 1 in 1,000,000 player. There's been a few who are similar, but nobody quite like him. If injuries didn't hinder his career his numbers would've been crazy. That's why this guy is known as the "Real Ronaldo", despite Cristianos exploits.
He is r9, most people consider cr7 as ronaldo, mainly because cr7 is considered by many as the greatest, with his age long rival messi. Understandable, since these two beasts make prime r9 look average, bagging 50 goals in their worst season, 60+ in their primes, meesi with 91
@@neil1982 for them to specify saying "real" already proves that cr7 is considered as ronaldo. If I say cristiano, anyone recognise cr7, if I say ronaldo is the goat, almost everyone assumes its cr7 instantly. To have to specify by saying "real" or "other" ronaldo already proves my point
@@yareyare4284 Not at all. Cristiano is only more relevant now because he is still playing (if you call it that) and the younger generation knows him. Real Ronaldo, Fat Ronaldo, R9, Original Ronaldo, World Cup Winner Ronaldo, he goes by many names and because you're a 12 year old you just don't understand it. Either way, you'd want both Ronaldos in their prime in your team.
@@neil1982 hmm, only a kid calls another person "kid". But ill humor you, cr7 is viewed by many to this day as the goat, and its not even a bad assumption until you compare him to messi, his one and only rival. But what makes him the goat to many is his mentality, his ability to bounce back from anything, even from losing his father, his own son and being betrayed by his own club. People want that kind of dedication, r9 never had such mental prowess. Like you said, he was fat. Cr7 who had lower talent than most legends like pele, Maradona, even r9, still surpassed them all with pure hard work. Thats why he is the one most people refer to as " ronaldo is better than messi" because nobody is crazy enough to say r9 is better than messi, but people do genuinely consider cr7 to be better, so he is more often referred to as ronaldo than cristiano
Great video, just a little correction, there was an example of a kid who was known to become the best: Maradona. Check his story, he was famous since he was 12 years old, people knew he was out of this planet.
Ronaldo was the best as an individual player. He got everything what a complete striker needed. But Maradona is different in my view. He is a leader. He himself can take his team to a different level when they need to. He can make his team look superior just because he is in the team. I remembered he went to Napoli and win the Serie A which I never imagine Napoli can win because Juve, both Milan teams are so strong and favorite to win. And the obvious one was when Argentina won 2 times with him in the team. One of it, Brazil was rank 1 to win but Argentina won it at last.
Let's just say this. At his worst, he was the top scorer of a World Cup. That's how insanely good he was. Van Basten is a similar case - had it not been for their injuries, their careers would be even more impressive.
Never heard of this and I'm Brazilian. Flamengo wasn't sure they wanted him because of the injuries, the hookers episode and the lack of money. Ronaldo got pissed and signed Corinthians. It was unbeliavable.

I was a young girl and even though I liked football and always played with the boys at school, it wasn't until that Barcelona's 96/97 season, that I truly understood the beauty of the sport and I will forever be grateful to the GOAT Fenómeno. That 96/97 team will always have my heart and soul, I followed La Liga religiously that year and even bet money on it, the whole team was made of goats, the most perfect pairs and fluid combos I've ever seen. I'm portuguese, but Fenómeno will always be my all time favorite... he showed me what football was all about and made me fall in love with the game, there will never be another player that will beat that first love. On another note, this was still in the ol' days where players didn't try and save up their legs, he would go back to defend and seconds later would be scoring, this is beautiful to watch but very hard to keep it on the long run. How I wished we could've had more of him... what a pleasure to watch!
From a portuguese fellow: YES! He was the reason i truly fell in love with the sport! Pure raw talent that was so above everyone else competing at La Liga at the time (also before and after in Inter Milano), it was almost like watching an adult playing against kids on a football pitch while being the "kid" himself! Truly a Phenomenon and probably the best player ever (if not for the serious injuries) ❤
Injuries are the worst. One day you are the future of a sport, the next you are just watching the sport. R9 the best of striker of his time, and one of the best of history. It was great watching him play.
I can remember his famous Barcelona goal as i was 14 years old as if had been 2,3 years ago, so impressive it was! Now i‘m 40 years old and i agree with Zidane: He was the best player in the world in that time and belongs to the 5 best players of all time
We often talked of the training staff who surrounded Ronaldo to rehabilitate his knee. They concentrated on developing quadriceps strength to the detriment of his hamstrings. The muscular imbalance is painfully evident on the famous practice video.
the best ever. I think, this is a perfect scenario for a hollywood movie about the greatest of all times. Those beginnings is something special really. Ronaldo Fenomeno deserves such movie about him.
I remember as a 6 years old kid, seeing Ronaldo first time in 2002 world cup, leading the Brazil team to the world cup(although the team was jam-packed with great talents). He was the best scorer in the competition by far. Recently have I got to know that even 2002 version of Ronaldo was far from his prime. Can't imagine what kind of career he would have if those injuries didn''t occur.
I am from the UK and born in 1980. The first step over that I can remember was during a World Cup at some point in the 90’s. Ronaldo was so far superior to any other players and set the standard for the future’Galacticos’. I’d love to know what R9 without injuries could of become.
I once saw him on tv in a UEFA Cup game score 3 for PSV at Leverkusen. PSV lost 4-5. (the 2nd leg ended 0-0). I think he was about 18. He was absolutely sensational! Incredibly quick, perfect ball control.
When a player spends as much time out injured as Ronaldo did and still frequently makes discussions of the greatest of all time, you know they're a pretty fucking special talent. Heartbreaking that injuries made his career as stop start as it was, but still easily in the top three players I've seen in my lifetime, and the fact that the lad kept defying logic and coming back time and time again after folks (myself included, at times) wrote him off is a pretty incredible legacy too. Remember tuning into Corinthians matches in his twilight years and being blown away by how much talent still shone through despite age and an injury ravaged body. Still looked utterly unplayable at times.
My personal opinion is that Ronaldinho is the most entertaining player who's existed in my lifetime (35 years old). Ronaldo R9 is the most effective player I've seen, yet as with a lot of Brazilian players, the injury issues, off the field shenanigans and lack of longevity holds him back when compared to the likes of Messi and CR7. I completely get why some people would consider Ronaldinho to be the best player they've ever watched, but realistically, I think the entertainment value he provided flattered his efficacy when you compare him to the cream of the crop in football's history.
I need to say something very important to me. Sometimes people say "ah you can't compare the players from the past with them from today because of the lack of quality from the defenders". I want to defend the players from the past, all my idols because it was a completey different style of playing football than it is nowadays. May I mention that the game from the past was much more rough like nowadays? Observe how they want to tackle Ronaldo and much more rough when you observe how they want to tackle Maradonna when he was an active player! Almost every tackle had the intention to hit his bones and knock him out! I watched a lot of videos and really I was shocked while watching them. Fact is that the mayority of the players nowadays wouldn't like to play football anymore if they they would have such tough and rough oponents like our grand idols from the past had! The best example is Neymar or Mbappe or CR7 or Messi. I would like to watch Messi play with the oponents of the 70ties and 80ties like Maradonna need to fight with! The referee would protect the players like they are doing nowadays. In the past they were victims! Watch the documentations of Maradonna and observe the tackles he suffered. I can now understand very well the escalation when he was playing in Barcelona when two squads were fighting each other like I never saw it again in the history of football
He was a video game... He is the reason I used to enjoy world cups.He would invent a skill to get out of trouble with defenders...An artist...a football artist of the highest quality.
he scored like 54 times in 59 games for PSV and also averaged almost a goal a match in his first season for barca. On the other hand it took messi like 3-4 seasons to really start scoring goals just imagine what R9 wouldve done without the horrible injuries he suffered, like imagine he was born 20 years later with all the techniques and technology we have today someone with his talent would completely dominate everything he'd be so ahead of every player today its so crazy when you think about it
The first time i saw Ronaldo was PSV vs Leverkusen. It looked like an adult is playing against teenies, but actually he was the teenager! I think nobody watching this game wanted that the game ends, because every time Ronaldo touched the ball it was just unbelievable and pure joy. Only his technique was a little raw for an all time great player, everything else makes him the best striker ever imo. For me Romario was the better finisher. Also its not fair to compare Players from decades ago against Leo Messi or Mbappe, these kids have a complete different football education with full teams serving them. Players like Denilson were grabbed from the beach.
When you ask players like Zlatan and Zidane, and coaches like Mourinho who is the greatest footballer ever, they will always tell you it was Ronaldo, his career for Brazil is insane, and in Serie A, he played in the toughest league ever facing the greatest defenders ever. One of the greatest of all time, and all that while nearly losing his career. 2x World Cup Gold Medals, 1x Silver Medal, 2x Copa America Gold, 1 Copa America Silver, 1x Confederations Cup, and his myriad of individual awards through his career. A Legend, a Hero, and my GOAT.

1997 Ronaldo is still the greatest players i ever witnessed and i started Watching football since the early 90s. Yes, 'peak wise' , he was a superior player to Messi but Kids are gonna be upset hearing this.
I’m in my 40’s. I remember Ronaldo, and if you think he was superior to the Messi that played during Pep’s tenure, then you’re completely delusional. No disrespect
Sport is the best thing in the world, it can bring you so much joy and you just want to play no matter what. Until you get badly injured yourself, its hard to know how these players feel. I had to stop playing when I was 15, way before I hit my peak and it literally broke my heart and has taken me a long long time trying to find a way to get better before realising I can never play again and it really sucks. Im nowhere near as good as Ronaldo (only got payed once to play before I had to quit) but I bet you it was really hard for him because he knows he never got to see his full potential and thats what kills me also.
Even the GOAT Messi couldnt have had the career Fenomeno COULD have had. Even playing half a career he is still top 5 best players ever for me , thats how good he was.
Eh idk, R9 won 2 world cups (he didn’t really contribute to the first one tho) and he got to a final but Messi also won the world cup and got to a final. He also has 4 ucl’s (didn’t contribute to the first one) and 7 balon d’ors. He also has a ridiculous skillset and tons of legendary moments. R9 had the legendary skill runs and rounding the keeper was his specialty but Messi also had legendary dribbling runs but he also had legendary passes like the one against the Netherlands or even his assist vs Croatia from this past world cup. Ronaldo was more complete as a striker but Messi made up for it by evolving his game and becoming one of the greatest playmakers along with one of the greatest goalscorers, something R9 couldnt do.
R9, like Maradona, could never have the best career. They didn't have the discipline other players had. Moreover Ronaldo didn't have Maradona's winning mindset. But at their peak they were the greatest, along with Pelé and Messi
@@r.i.psteez929 "Messi didn't contribute to the first Champions League" is wrong. Go watch 2006 Messi vs Chelsea away game. He left Chelsea with 10 men and was crucial for a rival that usually eliminated Barcelona in previous seasons. Not to say he was the best player of the tournament, far from it but he was crucial in one of the hardest matches. He got injured at the Home game and never played again unfortunately, but he had a minor but still important contribution.
PSV’s doctors giving him steroids (there was a doctor that came out and said this) that made him put on muscle mass too quickly definitely wasn’t kind on his tendons and joints unfortunately. On top of the insane amount of games and minutes played during the timeframe, which made disaster inevitable
Just a note, in Brazil you can drive with 18 years, and if you are emancipated you can do it with 16 years. Thanks for making a video about one of the most important players in the history of world soccer and also brazilian.
