disclaimer: i initially made this for a school holiday homework project. I would love feedback for this video essay for the future if possible, I know there are a lot of inaccuracies with the script. Cheers
just want to clarify, something at 4:10. while Caravan is a fairly well known tune, Whiplash is extremely obscure, written by Hank Levy in the 80s, and is more familiar among high school students (i had never heard of whiplash before watching the film). also something to notice in regards to colour is how Neymann starts out wearing white shirts, and then as Fletcher who is dressed in all black, starts to have more influence over him, he starts wearing more and more black stuff too.
that's true, knowing whiplash before the film was probably a personal experience then, and I didn't notice that with the shirts either! Thanks for the advice.
Small correction Whiplash was written in the early 70s. But I agree I never heard anyone play that song until this movie came out. Soaring is a great album though, became a sort of classic fusion album im the decade since this movie came out.
Whiplash also keeps alot of shots from short film, mostly views of the page and few extras playing intruments, but tinted orange to fit with the colourscheme of the new footage.
bro this movie is like as antijazz you can get as possible. How did it motivate you to become a jazz player? I loved jazz and I play piano so I was thinking about going on a jazz route but after watching this movie and doing some research about classically trained musician i just put off by it.
Hi Ryan. This is a very well done cut of the movie. I really enjoyed it the first time I watched it and you just captured the essence of the movie in under 10 minutes. Thank you! Wish you good luck. With this quality in your videos you’re going to blow up for sure :)
This was a really well put together video. It's nice to see / know that RU-vid WILL give viewers what they want even if the channel / person behind it is relatively small.
Unbelievable video essay; clear, concise, captivating and informative. Cannot believe you only have 269 (now 270) subscribers. Truth be told I utterly adore 'Whiplash', but nonetheless you did a magnificent job, my man. Please keep at it, and much love from the Netherlands.
I loved this video Ryan, feels like such a fresh air from the convoluted space of RU-vid. Please continue to make videos like these, I already clicked that bell button, wanting more!
I'm not sure you supported the color argument sufficiently. I'm sure it's there as it makes sense compositionally and I have no background in film analysis, but you only included two scenes as green evidence
Thanks for the feedback! Yes, there were more in terms of colour that I missed and covered very briefly, such as the choices of costume, etc. This was a student-practice video essay, so I'm really just using this for feedback for school assessments.
I totally agree that because it centres more around Neiman and Fletcher it’s more of a boot camp story. But despite that I still found it really enjoyable.
gotta be honest, as an ex pro muso and having been to music college, i hated every second of this movie, i thought it was utter blx. who conducts a drum solo, ffs? rubbish, from start to finish.
