Gilbert and Sullivan's raucous operatic tale is captured in all its fun and glory in this production, recorded live at Central Park's Delacorte Theater. Kevin Kline sparkles as the swashbuckling and libidinous Pirate King while Linda Ronstadt makes her theatrical debut as the lovely and virginal Mabel. When Mabel and Frederic, a young pirate bound to serve the Pirate King, fall in love, complications arise and high spirited antics ensue. The incomparable cast offers the best in this boisterous romp.
Despite some of the technical shortcomings of the DVD I found it more rewarding than the 1983 movie. I would thoroughly recommend adding a copy of this DVD to your library.

This is one of several performances this group did in central park to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the operetta. Obviously, they videotaped this particular performance. It was so popular that they subsequently moved it to broadway where it had a long run, then made it a movie, all with essentially the same cast you see here.

By "this group" you mean Joseph Papp's Public Theater, one of the major not-for-profit theater companies in New York City! Among the principal cast, only Patricia Routledge (Ruth) didn't stay with the show -- a big loss, in my view. Her replacements were all seasoned actresses: Estelle Parsons, Kaye Ballard and then Angela Lansbury in the film, but none of them really had the "legit" pipes that Routledge brought to the role, matching her incomparable comic chops. (I saw the show in Central Park.)

She's not awful. Everyone needs to stop saying that the cast is bad. It's not the cast who decides it's the director's and musical director decision how each actor portrays/sings the character. This revival production won many tony awards. It was very successful when it went to Broadway because it was so clever.

I'm sure if G&S wrote PIRATES in 1979 it would be sung and performed this way, and with this colorful orchestration. It may not be far off the mark. The movie TOPSY TURVY is a good example of how their original performers had very simple and clear voices, more actors than singers. I'm not sure at what point G&S started to be over sung by classical singers. As Jim Broadbent says in TOPSY TURVY as Gilbert, his work is "low Burlesque."

Actually, Linda Ronstad, Mabel in this production, also plays Mabel in the movie adaptation of this musical. Furthermore, at the time this production, as well as the movie version were produced, Linda Ronstadt had a thriving recording career...probably the reason she was chosen for the role. Not mention, she has a very unique voice. I actually enjoy her in this role...she's not a traditional soprano, but a coloratura soprano. Hell, essentially she sings with balls.

Quite what 'the level of musical theatre' is supposed to mean baffles me and 'sing properly' seems so ludicrous as to be worthy of a wind up! I guess I meant "Thank you to whomever made the studio decision to film this wonderful version." One thing that is different from the D'Oyly Carte version *is* the emphasis on the burlesque.
