@@MrMGLo I’m sure there are but the problem is during the Khmer Rouge era, half blooded Cambodians had to secretly change their surname to avoid getting caught and executed by suspicious Khmer Rouge soldiers. Thus, nowadays those descendants might’ve forgotten their roots. You can take me as an example, as a half Chinese Cambodian my grandpa had to change our Chinese surname to avoid getting caught in order to survive the regime.

True. In part, they're trying to teach things too early (a lot of topics taught to students from Grade 3-6 are a bit too advanced for their young minds, especially when they use old Spanish or native terms that the students don't know). But also there's a lack of teaching when it comes to Mainland Southeast Asia. At best we get taught about trade with Malaysia, Indonesia, Taiwan, China, and Japan, but not much about Cambodia or Vietnam.

Hello Kirby, have you investigated Filipino influence in Mexico? I have read there was a lot of cultural exchange between Mexico and Philippines up until Mexico got its independence. The area of Acapulco has a centuries-old Filipino community, some of whom became important figures in Mexican history. Ricardo Pinzon made a list of historical Mexican governors and even one president (Juan Alvarez), who he found out they had Filipino ancestry. Drinking tuba is also common in some parts of Mexico. Small boats are called "pangas". A type of shirt called guayabera in Spanish is believed to come from what Filipinos call barong tagalog. Mango Manila and mango Ataulfo are Mexican-produced mangos but both originate in the Philippines. And one last thing, probably what surprised me the most, cockfighting also reached Mexico (and from there, many other countries) via Philippines.

I often visited Cambodia before going to the neighboring countries whenever I am on a long week days break from the office in Bangkok anyway I remembered a Cambodian tour guide told me about the story of the King and Josefa when he'd learned that I am a filipino born. I couldn't forget the tourists priceless reactions who at that time heard our conversation. One of them said " maybe the reason why my eyes keep looking at her" and (laughters broke out) that I noticed from the airport lol😀. Those old couples said they'd thought that I am a European in w/c I didn't know how to react but said they had many filipino friends who looks naturally charismatic and quite beautiful. The gentle nature and a sophistication of a Filipina is regarded as one of the top most beautiful women in the world the Cambodian tour guide said. In Cambodia in the mid 1990's filipino was well accommodated and respected differed when the millennials entered.

Maria Simone: I agree wholeheartedly with your description of the generation of Filipinas before the millennials, although of course, there are a few exceptions. My estranged British husband said: “One day, the world will wake up and see that the Filipinos are running the world!” IF, by miracle that happens, the world will be a kinder, more God-loving, caring and happy world, so long as the corrupt politicians and the “manlokoko” do not join in.

Spanish accounts mentioned that Rajah Sulayman's house and as well as those of other elites were made of huge planks and posts of wood. It had been reported that Rajah Sulayman's home had many "rooms" and "comforts", it's also said to have contained many luxury items, such as jewelries, money, silks, and blankets that were made of expensive cloths. The furniture in Sulayman's home was also estimated to have been worth approximately 5,000 ducats. Another structure next to Rajah Sulayman's house was said to be a storage room where he kept cannons and large amounts of copper. One of the cannons was reported to have been approximately 17ft long. During the colonial period, Spanish and indigenous architecture merged together, and this gave rise to the "Bahay na Bato" of the colonial period which clearly has a unique and very distinctive appearance that isn't found in other Spanish colonies.

Interesting. It's definitely taught nowadays, especially in private schools, but most of it focuses on pre-history (caveman times, especially the remains found in Cagayan and Palawan) along with things like anito, the manunggul jar, the Laguna Copperplate inscription, a brief mention of Baybayin, a few dieties from various ethnic groups, and trade with China and Arabia, plus Malaysia, Indonesia, Taiwan, and Japan. It's definitely lacking, but it's at least there now. Sadly, a lot of schoolbooks are outdated. Kahit na mas marami nang nasa curriculum, marami paring school na luma ang ginagamit na books. Yung high school nga namin bago lang nag-pandemic nakakuha ng bagong libro eh.

I have visited Angkor Wat and other temples in Siem Reap and found it quite amazing while imagining what it was like during those ancient times. The bas reliefs on their temples depict a very sensual nature in their culture. Of course Angelina Jolie's Lara Croft:Tomb Raider movie made it more exciting and I did visit Ta Phrom where the iconic root-bound temple was located where they shot some movie scenes. Too bad Norodrom's religion specifically allowing someone many wives became a deterrent to his romance with Pepita, our beautiful filipina. How romantic indeed!

thank you for this story, i also heard that a Khmer king offered a buffalo as a gift to a Filippino chieftain of which the origin of the Tagalog word "carabao" for the buffalo which is similar to the Khmer word "Krabai", is this story has any substance in the Philippino history?

Watch someone make a YA contemporary retelling!!! P.S. The fact that Pepita chose to stay Catholic instead of marrying a foreign king is one many female Catholic saints understood all too well. Sad that she died so young.
