I saw the Kinks at a place called The Boathouse in Norfolk VA in 1988. There couldn't have been more than 300 people there. Cool show..The place was aptly named, it was an old water garage for repairing boats.
@@Paul-dw2cl Maybe but it can get silly when it's " this band is better than that band" when it's all subjective. And it usually turns into someone isn't able to accept another's opinion. I'm having a discussion? above but it's not based on which band is better but a term being used for one of the bands which I feel is incorrect. Whether they find the Beatles or the Kinks better is their opinion. I take issue and stop having fun when I make a list of what my favorite albums are and I'm told I'm wrong , which recently happened.
The Beatles, after playing for thousands of hours in Hamburg, were one of, if not the tightest bands in the world. People who heard them at that time said they were unbelievable.
I love hearing the recordings pre Hamburg & they're just a typical teen garage band, and then recordings of when they got back - and it's almost like a religious experience.
I only saw The Kinks one time back in a small venue 30 years ago. I remember them saying..."this is an old Van Halen song" before they went into "You really got me"
The influence of The Kinks can not be understated. Especially in America the impact of The Kinks was huge. If not only for You Really Got Me, which was the first song entirelly build around a single guitar riff, plus that sound was rougher than anything before it.
Everyone concidered The Beatles and The Stones as England's top rockers. Rolling Stone In seperate interviews were asked who They thought were #1? Both answered ...the Kinks!
I’m pretty sure in retrospect it’s genuinely agreed upon that the Beatles sucked live, not because they were bad performers, just that amplification technology had not caught up to their level of fame yet
@@Viper-dz2kw Yeah, but I don't think anything would've been powerful enough to make anyone louder that thousands of screaming fans. Not even today's technology.
What the Kinks never had that the Beatles had in shed loads was that Aura surrounding them . The Kinks were great live and that was that, but after seeing the Beatles you took the Aura home with you and it lasted.
The Kinks were a great date night compromise. He wants to go to the big boxing match. She wants to take in the opera. They compromise and go to a Kinks concert and everyone is happy.
I love the Kinks. Ray Davies was on a Mozart level of pop-composition streak for a decade(+). And it doesn't get said enough: They were psyche-pop/rock pioneers. "See My Friends" was released in July 1965! Amazing band.
I Saw The Kinks in 1981 in Houston Texas at a bar in downtown Houston and they rocked the place man it was so impressive. Listening to their stuff over the radio and seeing them live I mean after I saw him live I love The Kinks ever since
Kinks "You really got Me" still rocks to this day . This song first comes to my mind from that era . I can't think of anything from the beatles that comes to mind until the Revolver LP .
you Irish ? you'll like this one. heard it from my childhood friend's Irish grandfather : " why did the sun never set on the British empire ? Because god would never trust the british in the dark "
More evidence that had George Martin not worked with The Beatles they would never have been the slightest bit above The Kinks or The Who or The Stones. Now, imagine if any of the other bands had gotten Martin as their producer, arranger, co-writer and overall genius backing them instead of The Beatles. Fortunes would have been totally flipped.
If you remove the producer handling them, the Kinks only had Ray Davies at the head, who with Townshend, while the Beatles had Lennon/McCartney and then later on Harrison It's quite funny that it's solely credited to Martin for being responsible for their cohesiveness when it's the entirety of The Beatles that keeps everything together.
Dude I love The Kinks and the Davies brothers but no way. Paul McCartney alone is a once in a generation level musician. John Lennon and George thrown into the mix and it’s not even close. And this is the Kinks being the 2nd best British Invasion act imo.
That and four musicians who could be frontmen in their own groups, three very accomplished songwriters and harmonies that are unforgettable. I love the Kinks but they are no Beatles.
Ray Davies is as talented as anyone out there. Dave Davies iconic solo in You Really Got Me changed music. Music isn't a competition even if people are.
For every good beatles song i can name a good kinks song. Waterloo sunset, thank you for the days, you really got me, all day, sunny afternoon, lola ect. I'm a fan of both.

When I was a kid the Kinks and the Who were my favorite bands. I dug the Kinks just a little bit more though. Then I heard the Ramones and that was it. Without the Kinks though the Ramones wouldn’t have existed. Even when punk started getting weird with stupid rules and idiots would say you weren’t allowed to like any music that wasnt punk, I still listened to the kinks.
Tbf the Beatles and the kinks were more similar than they were different. They wrote about a lot of the same topics. Although the Kinks invented Brit Pop.
The Kinks were great but they NEVER "overshadowed the Beatles." I'm sorry that's just NONSENSE. I don't care what little situation happened one time at some little European gig. The WORLD belonged to the Beatles, they were KINGS, every other band were just lucky to be there.
Roy Orbison did it, before the Beatles became famous Roy Orbison toured with the Beatles as the opening act in Britain. Roy Orbison was getting standing ovations and after a little while of this. John Lennon finally said to him Yankee go home. the British people were quite impressed with with Roy Orbison. that was also when he became known for the dark glasses. because he accidentally left his regular set of glasses on the plane.
@@musicauthority7828 "Although Orbison was originally intended to be the headlining act, the reaction to the Beatles on the tour caused them to be promoted to co-headliners, with the Beatles closing the set in the traditional headlining spot.[3]" en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roy_Orbison/The_Beatles_Tour
@@remmidemmi496 I know more about Roy Orbison than anyone, other than those who knew him personally. I have heavily researched everything there is to be known about him. so don't want to test my knowledge when it comes to Roy Orbison.
I LOVE the Kinks!!! They were my favorite band when I was young. I met Dave Davies recently and told him he should be known also for inventing the distorted guitar sound in "You Really Got Me" (1964)...a year before the Rolling Stones "Satisfaction" (1965).
Ray Davies has had well over 500 songs published I read somewhere hmm not too shabby is it personal view is they weren't marketed as well as could have been ,but without the Beatles doing it with George Martin Thier way set the now way.of bands writing Thier own stuff ,generally breaking the old way of being made puppets of out of touch executives so giving artists a lot of the freedoms now seen as normal I reckon.
I think it’s a testament to a band like The Kinks that they’re at least remembered. Imagine how hard it must’ve been to be recognized and stand out while The Beatles, the inarguable greatest group of all time, was topping the whole decade. That’s pretty rad. Also that thing about the Stones winning IS unfair
In 1962 my aunt saw a group who played thier new single. She thought they were load and not very good. The song was "love me do" by some group called beatles
They only went on after the Beatles because they were late and who cares if Davies heard some people requesting the Kinks. I’m sure they had many fans.
Dave was phenomenal guitarist (he was 17 when he revolutionize rock'n'roll with his guitar solo in "you really got me") and Mick Avory was a great drummer. Moreover Dave singing blended in so many surprisingly and interesting way with the lead singing of his brother Ray. Finally Pete Quaife was adorable in his belief to be the most essential member of the group
I’m very sure that there was a short period around 1964-5 when within the UK; the Kinks were outselling the Beatles both for records and concert tickets. They never got as big as the Beatles in the USA though. One thing that I will say is that in the period 1966-69; the Kinks were writing & producing better music than the Beatles were. The Village green preservation society album of the Kinks is more than a cut above the Beatles’ white album. But ironically & unfortunately; that was after the Kinks popularity peaked and they were in the wilderness in terms of chart success.
The kinks were effectively unknown in the US because of their dodgy behaviour they were banned from American tv shows. A great pity as Americans never really discovered what a great band they really were. Idiosyncratically British tho
utter nonsense. their last 2 singles of 1964 got to no17 and no9 in the UK charts. and your evidence about one gig in bournemouth comes from a. a member of the kinks b. the manager of the kinks relaying a comment from john lennon in a kinks fan comic. You also state they didnt win any awards and lost to The Stones, who were always overshadowedd by The Beatles.
Evidence of the Bournmouth gig also came from John lennon. Same thing happened when Roy Orbison toured with the Beatles, and the Stones did win awards.
Have you guys heard the story where John Lennon tried to psyche-out Ray Davies by brushing a little bit of dandruff off of the shoulder of Ray Davies’ jacket right before the Kinks went on stage?
It was because they refused to join the musicians union and fork over money to some scumbag that didn't deserve it. Ray Davies was very business savvy too. He started his own label even before The Beatles started their Apple label I think so the record companies couldn't control him and profit off of him.
Then came Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin. Man what a time. And in America God I don’t have the time to name all the great bands. But the big 4 Floyd Beatles Stones and Zeppelin all came from across the pond. And thank god. I can’t imagine a world without the big 4
If it weren’t for poor management and the Davies brothers infighting, the Kinike would’ve been way more successful than they were. Especially in America. They definitely deserved more attention than they got/get. Village green preservation society is one of my favourite albums
Everything seems different in retrospect but I can assure you that absolutely no one overshadowed The Beatles in England. No group made more controversial headlines at the time than the Rolling Stones but that never equated to ‘overshadowing’ as in challenging their status as the group with best known songs and members. Everyone knew who Mick Jagger was. Everyone knew every member of the Beatles. In that level of fame they were a one-off. Also extent to which their songs have been covered by others. No one else comes close.
