The Red Arrows are gearing up for their diamond jubilee this year, but some parts of their history remain relatively unknown despite having performed at air shows worldwide for the past 60 years.
Retired Squadron Leader Henry Prince, who was known by the callsign Red 7, was part of the founding team that Lee Jones put together.
He told Forces News: "What a lot of people don't know, even in the British Forces Broadcasting [Service] is that the team was disbanded at the end of '65. That was it."

Ahh, a bit over 25 years ago they came through Alice Springs on the way to Sydney. I was airside and after a chat with a pilot he suggested folk be up the tower when they departed in about half an hour. The word went round and the tower had many people up there as normal work stopped. Oh boy, it was spectacular without a large public audience to worry about! Anyone who was there will remember it well: I certainly do…

In the early 70s, the Reds moved to RAF Manston for a month while the runway at their home base Kemble was being resurfaced. A group of French students were visiting and stood by the control tower to watch them practice. One of the Gnats broke off and came in low and fast from the North while the students were watching the rest of the formation off to the South. I was in the tower watching and the Gnat passed by me below tower height directly over the students with many of them hitting the ground in shock.

I remember the Hunters always used to do a solo high speed run up behind the crowds at shows, it always got people jumping.

Love the Red Arrows and sadly miss seeing them as in Lowestoft we no longer have the Air Show 😢😢😢 I do hope one day our council will bring it back as it was a very fun day out with your family or with just friends.

I wish the Americans would use trainers like the Red Arrows or the Canadian Snowbirds. Keeping the show close to the crowd and flying more jets is what make the Red Arrows so exciting . Tactical jets are great but so much of the show is away from the crowd and there are fewer aircraft.

Were always the highlight of the Farnborough Airshow in the 60's, Farnborough was the shop window for the UK aircraft industry. They had to bring one performance forward a few hours one year when a demo aircraft crashed killing a number of spectators to divert attention from the accident.

Hi bigblue. I also saw them in their first year. We were at RAF Wildenrath when they gave a display, I was 9-1/2 and so excited. I have followed them since then, and have had great enjoyment from many of their fantastic displays. My uncle was stationed at RAF Valley during '67, I was fortunate enough to be able to spend summer holidays with him and my aunty, one very special occasion was that same summer, he was a Sgt carpenter and had to set up a lecturn for a (then) Prince Charles visit, while he was doing that on a Saturday morning I was allowed to take a gentle walk around the Gnats of the Reds, there was a tap on my shoulder and when I turned around WOW ! there stood a pilot in his Reds and took me into an office to show me more fantastic pictures and gave me a personal tour of one of the planes, when it was time to leave he took me back to his office and handed me a cardboard box, telling me "Pip, one day you will probably have your own motorbike, we would like you to have these to use on your bike, only open them when your Uncle gets you home".......Inside the box........Yep ! a pair of Red Arrows Flying Boots, I treasured those boots for many many years, I never wore them, I never used them on my motorbikes, they were just too treasured to use, then one day one of my RAF supposed work colleagues stole them from my wardbrode, I was absolutely gutted, and never did find out who stole them. B'stard !
