Great engineering!! Drive the steel plug into the axle stub rust scale and all. That makes for a strong joint, dontcha know?? This repair does NOT create a joint stronger than the original. Before it broke, the axle was in a constant state of compression - tension as it rolled. Those 2 forces were equally distributed over the diameter of the axle shaft. Now that the center of the axle is a separate piece, it no longer shares in compression or tension as the distribution of these forces now stops at the boundary between the repair plug and the original axles material. This allows the end of the axle to have leverage when exerting tension on the axle so only the repair plug will not share in carrying those loads and the axle can begin to fracture at the outer surface of the plug at the deepest point of the weld.

These axles are so grossly overloaded that I do not know how they survive the abuse they put them through at all??? I don't know how those poor u-bolts hold the axle in place with the extreme weight they are loading on those crazy big leaf springs!!! I work on heavy duty trucks in the USA and these videos just amaze me how they overload these axles 4+ times the weight they were designed to haul!!
@tristan6509

Japanese trucks are pretty durable, they're designed to carry alot more weight than the "rated capacity" It's still dangerous nonetheless though.
@QuintonsIchannel
@QuintonsIchannel 2 года назад
Have you ever heard of a 5:1 test ratio? I can't speak for those axles or yours but from what I've seen most axles come between 3:1 5:1 or is tested 3 to 5 times it's marked rating. Manufacturers do this because it safer. Less law suits and its a better product.

If you look at the break. It is a clear case of fatigue failure. However , what caught my attention was that once the Crack had progressed 25 to 30% of the dia the component failed. Shows the extent of overloading it was subject to.

How is that stronger? The plug is not even a tight fit, it is covered in surface scale/rust so it will just vibrate loose even though they pounded it in with a hammer. And there was no preheat so the weld does not have good penetration to the original metal.

@@fiaao546 yeah it is a wonder the machine shops and foundries aren't making heavy duty diffs and axles by now. 1st thing the axle was cut almost halfway through and then fatigued and broke the rest of the way . 2nd the corrosion on the press fit plugshould have been removed before pressing in (hammering into place in their case) as rust doesn't hold as well as clean metal on metal , also wouldn't be stronger then original, original was weakened by someone cutting it you can see it plain as day
