If they are right on the beat, it doesn't matter which ones. It could be 1&3, 2&4, 1&4, 2&3, or any other combination. If they are in time with the band, then they are right where they need to be. Take it from a drummer, the only place a band or an audience participating, needs to be, is on the beat. "My beat". No one deserves to be slapped for clapping out of time ( or which beats they are attempting to clap on). Just ignore them to the best of your ability. That's what I do and it works for me everytime. You might "know" it's "right" to clap on 2&4, but if your NOT ON, with MY 2&4, it's not 2&4.
