The “backdiving” contract was legal and signed off on by the League. The punishment was from a rule changed after the fact, and I don’t understand how it’s not illegal.

It's illegal now because teams were betting on increased salary caps at the end of the player's contracts and basically getting them for cheap now and able to spend more up front. They would basically be sacrificing and tanking future years and being rewarded with high draft picks. If the salary caps increase significantly then the back end contract would become a better percentage value and gotten a competitive edge.

This trade is looking way better now than 2 years ago. Markstrom is starting to look like a star and even though it was rough at first we sucked ass anyways and now we are at least on the way back up while he is good.

I think signing miller to a deal was worth it and getting goalie coach guru Ian Clark icing on the cake. Really mentored Marky into being the MVP of this team.

Exactly the point, the Nucks won that trade this season, when Markstrom finally looks like a solid starter or even a goalie you can win with. For the years before, Florida got one of the better starters, a future Hall of Famer, which still was good. To say Florida lost this trade because they didn't get any playoff success out of Luongo, is nonsense. The team was never a powerhouse in the East those years, and just because the Panthers couldn't provide a successful team around a goalie you could have won with, doesn't make the trade bad. Florida got a lot of games and solid stats out of Luongos time there, Markstrom is shinning now, years later.

Luongo was my favourite player, I only got into hockey in 2009, and seeing him play was amazing. The day he was traded (much like the day Ohlund was traded, i still remember where i was when i heard about that) was the worst, i was distraught, but now, 5+ years later, im glad it happened, marky has been amazing, and i would love for us to keep him. If Demko becomes the next Patrick Roy or something, then we can still get stuff for Markstrom, because hes still one of the better goalies in the league. without putting too much bias, this trade was an absolute steal for Vancouver

Thanks for bringing this up, Steve. Dealing with the cap-recapture penalty is very frustrating. The rules did not prevent these kinds of contracts at the time, and to be retroactively punished for the actions of the previous management team is tough to rationalize. 3 million a season represents a significant advantage over another team, especially when it comes to resigning key players and young players to new contracts. Very few players, and nearly no executives from the time when Luongo's contract are with the club. I understand why the rule is in place, but I'm really not sure the punishment fits the crime, especially considering it was an entirely legal contract at the time it was signed, you might be able to see why this hard to stomach.

The trade was necessary as Luongos time was up in Van. The fact that the Canucks got a starting goalie (eventually) out of it makes it a huge win for them. Not to mention that Markys grown to be a fantastic person off the ice, and is very popular with his teammates.

Ahh to be a Canucks fan during the Luongo years. I remember phoning all my friends screeching when we traded for him. I remember his fantastic first season when he willed us into the playoffs. I remember loving the move to make him Captain and sorry it didn't work out. I do dislike that people say no goalie should be a Captain again. It's a matter of personality, Marc-Andre Fluery would have been a fantastic first Captain of the Knights. Luongo did have major issues in the playoffs and was very weak taking shots over his shoulders - he couldn't close up, and so that's all where Brad Marchand shot. He was emotional, couldn't shake off bad goals. He was a great guy though and legitimately funny but as an introvert that could only really come out through his Twitter which still dispenses occasional gems. I hope he gets back into the game in an executive level.

Luo was why I got into hockey, watched him play on TV one day, and instantly became interested in the Canucks. Several years passed, then as an adult I chose to follow the Canucks due to my experiences watching Luo. I immediately became enthralled with Ryan Miller but was always more excited to watch Markstrom play. Watching him come into his own this season has been one of the major driving factors for me having hope in the Canucks!
@gregholman2431

I think it's clear that the Luongo trade from VAN to FLA really surprised everyone; especially given that the Canucks had not long before already traded one of their two elite goaltenders in Schneider. Few expected that anyone would be reasonably inclined to take up Luongo's salary. Then, when Luongo was surprisingly traded, it seemed that most all thought that it really was a huge win and really a huge steal for the Panthers, basically. Eventually, though (pretty much, some years later), Markstrom has turned out to be quite a surprise (for the Canucks); perhaps a fairly unexpected one. It has taken quite a fair bit of time and patience, and initially something of a shot in the dark for Markstrom, on the part of the Canucks, but Markstrom has certainly developed into a quality-caliber goaltender at the NHL-level. Also, of note, is that some years ago the Canucks actually placed Markstrom on waivers, when they had Miller and Lack. No team claimed him then, which probably surprised a fair share of people, and of which was rather fortunate for the Canucks, ultimately.

Bobby Lu was one of the reasons I got into hockey back in 2010 when he backstopped Canada to the gold medal. He was dynamite for the Canucks and I thought he got a raw deal with the way things ended in Vancouver. Not starting him at the Heritage Classic was just the dumbest move from Torts, a straight up middle finger to the guy who carried the team on his back for years. The guy's elite, future HHoFer for sure. Ultimately hindsight tells us that the Canucks did pretty well in the end, I always wanted them to keep Schneider and have him take over the no.1 spot when stuff with Lu went sour, but flipping him for the now Captain of the Canucks evidently worked out great, plus as you said, Marky has been lights out this season. Anyway, great vid, favourite Luongo save: robbing Ben Eager (great call from Jim Hughson on that play). Favourite Luongo memory: the strombone1 saga. Legend

It's worth mentioning that the Panthers took a seven-figure recapture penalty of their own from Luongo choosing to retire in 2019 (had he waited another year, it would've only been 73k). It's around 35 percent of what Vancouver's paying, but 1.2 million still on their cap possibly affected some of their choices in free agency (I remember rumors that the Panthers were looking at Panarin as well as Bobrovsky last year, but then they came home with twilight Anton Stoolman...).

Bobby Lou was a revelation to the Nucks but the cap recap is a kick to the nads. Marky is on 2 years of standing on his head as last year his numbers may not show it since the D was (Fake sneeze) Crap! Marky's dad passed this year and it wasn't all injury that had him leave... heartbreak played a role and he still came to work tough as nails. Now with a semi-decent Nucks D, Marky sharted showing his numbers as they are and he truly deserves the award this year as well as MVP. Nucks Nation is going to scream and cry if he doesn't get resigned. Still wish Strombone knocked Timmy Tomtom's block off in the 2011 showcase showdown... woulda topped it all off at least with that.

This deal sucked just for the plain fact that we lost Luongo. Luongo was one of the big reasons I watched hockey and liked the Canucks back then. The biggest reason he wanted to be traded was because he hated Torts and treat Lu like garbage. I mean Torts even had Lack as the starter for the WINTER CLASSIC in a Canadian market. It was a pure slap in the face from torts and that was the last straw
@bblvrable
@bblvrable 4 года назад
The biggest reason he wanted to be traded was because he was demoted to backup in 2013 under Vigneault. Luongo asked to be traded as soon as that happened, but no teams were interested because of his ridiculous contract (hence the "my contract is garbage, I'd scrap it if I could" comment). When Torts came in, all he knew was that Luongo wanted out, so he made Lack the starter for the season. It was still a slap in the face to bench him for the WC, though.

A word that's used a lot these days in discrimination. Well, that's what happened to Vcr. The capologist in Vcr put one over on the league, but within the CBA rules, and Bettman didn't like it. So when the new CBA was brought in he cleared the length on contracts up BUT he also retroactively imposed the NEW rules on the contract that been signed during the OLD CBA. He retroactively struck down a legal contract. I can't think of any other business being allowed to do this. It made the NHL look bad, however, most of the media is in the East and they didn't give a fig. But it didn't finish there Luongo rather than go on LTI at the end of his career and greatly lessen the financial blow to Vcr, retired and this cost Vcr million financially and Cap wise. Luongo was the worse thing that happened to Vcr, the only good part was we got Markstrom, a man with class and still performing while Luongo is hobbling around Miami under the scrutiny of Mrs. Luongo ...... you deserve it Luo

The Panthers aren't my most favorite team, but I've been watching them for a few seasons as a secondary team I support, and for all of the defense the Panthers don't play, .918 is sadly not good enough to carry the team. Luongo was great, but I would have to guess that his GAA is relatively high for such a good SV%. The Bobrovsky contract was a mess, and now Dreidger and Montembeault are making a good case for themselves to get some starts. Anyways there's no reason why Panthers fans should be upset at the trade that I can see, only the wasted potential.
