When the Wind Blew Out At Wrigley 

This game further supports my idea to have the Marlins break the home run distance record by playing with the roof open during a hurricane.

I remember reading a newspaper article about this game which began with “The Cubs scored 22 runs, and they *still* couldn’t win.”

Fun Fact: This game was not televised in the Philadelphia area. We only had the radio broadcast. They didn't show this on TV until later in the week on an off day titled Shootout in Chicago. Some more fun facts: in the late 70's/early 80's it seemed like these 2 teams would interchange players. Several players in this game at one point in their careers played for both teams. Phillies players in this game who also played for the Cubs included Greg Gross, Doug Bird, Rawley Eastwick, Rudy Meoli(former Cub Manny Trillo was also on the Phillies but didn't play in this game). Cubs players in this game who were also Phillies were Ivan DeJesus, Ted Seizmore, Barry Foote, Jerry Martin, Willie Hernandez. As was stated in this video, the Phillies were in 1st place in the NL East with a 24-10 record but after this wild game it was all down hill as they ended up going 60-68 the rest of the season and finished in 4th. Just a side note, 2 Phillies in this game, Ron Reed and Bake McBride, are being inducted into the Phillies Hall of Fame and will be put on the Wall of Fame on 8/6/22. Oh, and the Phillies centerfielder you disrespected is 8X Gold Glove winner Garry Maddox who was called The Secretary of Da Fence in his day so if you're going to besmirch a center fielder, this isn't the guy to besmirch.

I watched most of that game on TV. It was such a news story, the local network re-ran the game a couple of days later. Unheard of at the time...

Fantastic video! Thank you for posting. Probably on WGN back in the day, but I think that was a few years before we could get that station on cable. Great to see the combination of power hitting and small ball that made for great baseball in the 70s and 80s. I miss it.

Crazy thing about watching a game from the 70s is seeing how hard guys run towards bases, even home plate, on a base hit that'll easily score them. Seeing so many guys not run hard nowadays unless they need to, it's kind of unique.

Oh wow...I remember hearing about this game while staying at the Watergate hotel in DC, having won the trip for being on Jr. High Quiz. Nice to see a complete rundown of the game after all these years!

I remember a Mets/Cubs game, probably back in the 80s. It didn't quite get this out of hand, but I think it was something like 18-14 or something. The Mets were making a comeback and Lee Smith was brought in. I remember the announcers saying that he must have asked to be put in, because it wasn't an important game and usually you wouldn't run your star closer out in that sort of a game. Smith shut the Mets down. Pete Rose does not belong in the HOF, unless his plaque specifically says that he bet on his own games- even if he bet for them to win that means that he managed the games to win on a specific day rather than to get the most wins at the end of the season. Maybe a blank plaque that just lists his numbers and why he didn't get one with his name.

Watching these videos - just 30 years ago sometimes, I'm amazed at how far field prep and maintenance has come in that time. That MLB level field at Wrigley was a dusty mess back then, as was most of the fields. Anyway, just random things I notice. Ha.

I'd actually watched the game on TV (Philadelphia channel 17) that day. Never thought it would end. Sadly, the Phils went on a cliff after that game, (Ending in 4th place in the NL East) with Ozark being fired and replaced by Dallas Green. When the wind blows out at Wrighley, watch out for homers.

Interesting that you think Rose should be in the Hall... I suppose you're entitled to your opinion, as wrong as it is... But Rose gambled on games he was involved with, a huge threat to the honest "try-every-day-as-hard-as-you-can" efforts that the fans deserve to see. Even if he only bet on his team (and this is heavily disputed), what does that say about the days he didn't bet??
