Great video. You should definitely do another video about harsh lighting. The reason i say this is because most people find themselves at events where they have no choice but to shoot during harsh lighting conditions. Even if it is just a family event but you want to capture those shots.
Thank you! Yep, I am definitely going to make that video soon! I also find myself having to shoot in harsh sunlight situations a lot, especially for clients. So hopefully it will be helpful!
Thank you for the quality, content, and regularity of these videos. I love your teaching style and getting a notification that a new video has been posted is like a little present in my inbox. ❤️
Great video! very interesting. If you do "part 2", it would be nice to know what backup equipment you carry in your photoshoots, such as additional batteries or a second camera, things like that.. Thank you!
Julia, you’re amazing! By all means would a part ii be appreciated! Please! One hears and sees many photographers who say that it is not good or advisable to shoot in midday sun. Fair enough, but sometimes it’s either that, or nothing, depending on one’s schedule. Your tips are very easy to connect with and are very helpful. Your teaching style is good, also. Love your videos and look forward to seeing you get to the 100K subscribers soon. You deserve it! Ciao!
Ahh you are amazing! Thank you so much :) Yeah I also advise to shoot in morning or afternoon light if you can, but I completely understand that it's not always possible since I've been in the same position so many times! I hope you continue enjoying my videos, I appreciate your support 💛
Thank you so much, that makes me so happy to hear :) I have a bunch of Lightroom Tutorials up on my channel which is what I use to edit my photos in case you're interested in having a look!
Do you ever use a scrim when shooting in harsh light? Great video, and for those new to photography it’s always reassuring when you here people say it goes wrong for everyone from time to time. But when it does there’s usually a work-round if you don’t panic,
Thank you! Haha yep I've learnt to keep calm in tough situations and you can usually find a way to work around it :D I've used a scrim a couple of times in the past which is super handy for shooting in harsh sunlight. But I personally prefer to keep my photoshoots as simple as possible as I love to get the model to move around a lot to capture my images. So for me, having someone hold a scrim or a reflector isn't really efficient in what I do and I prefer to just make the natural lighting work! I'm going to touch on the scrim subject though in my harsh sunlight video!
My favorite has been going out with a friend to shoot 20 minutes before sunset and starting the camera with a notification "NO CARD" Rushed back home, grabbed a card and got some cool shots just in time though 😂
You are way sweeter than sugar I do have a question. Should I use Lightroom or Photoshop, I prefer Lightroom cause it's easy and not so much headache but what's your opinion on this
Aw thank you 💛So I use both programs, but for completely different things. I use Lightroom to colour grade my images - it's great for batch editing an entire shoot in a short amount of time. And then I use Photoshop to retouch my images. I used to do colour grading in Photoshop when I first started, but Lightroom is so much more efficient for that! Hope that helps :)
I have a question for you! As a beginner photographer wanting to do fashion/lifestyle portraits, I have found myself stuck in a TFP cycle. How do I begin to actually make money? I live in a super small town in South Carolina so there aren’t many models to begin with, so when I find one we do TFP. But I can’t do this forever, I have bills and want to upgrade my gear but seem to be so stuck. No one wants to book they just want to collab. Any advice?
This could be a whole video that I was actually thinking of filming in the near future! I could talk about this subject forever, but just to keep it simple for the comments for now, if fashion photography is what you are passionate about and what you want to do maybe you could consider moving closer to a city that has that market available? If moving isn't an option, then you could always stick to doing TFP to fulfil your passion on fashion photography, but then take on different clients to be able to make money from photography at the same time. So you could offer portrait sessions, family sessions, weddings, you could look into selling prints or presets online and things along those lines. I hope that helps!
Julia Trotti Thanks so much for always answering our questions, especially mine since I literally ask a new one each video you put out 😭 But I do think I’m going to have to shoot other things on the side to earn money and then maybe one day I’ll be able to travel even further for shoots 🤞 But your work is stubbing & your videos are so dang helpful so thank you so much!
For a personal photoshoot I normally like to take photos for 1 - 2 hours, I take maybe 600-1000 photos during that session and edit 10 - 30 photos, depending on how many looks and locations we used. For client shoots, it all depends on what they booked me for!
Aw no, I'm sorry :( My Australian accent probably doesn't help! I think you can use subtitles on RU-vid that automatically translate to a selected language?
It takes me a little bit of time to get around to respond to comments - but I try to respond to everyone when I can! Yes I photograph weddings! I would love to make a behind the scenes, but I wouldn't want to take away anything or be too distracting on the couple's big day. I'm going to be making a few videos related to wedding photography soon though, so hopefully you'll enjoy those for now :)
I have canon t7i/ 800d and when I usually edit my photos I try to get the color tone like your photograph but can't. Please, can you say how you color grade your image? Are you using luts or only photoshop?
I use Lightroom to colour my images, and have made presets from some of my favourite colours which are available here: www.digitalfilmactions.com/ I hope that helps!
