When To Add Dechlorinator During Water Change - (Seachem Prime)

As simple as when to add dechlorinator during water change is, I get asked this question all the time. Adding dechlorinator to your aquarium is a must do in any application but when to add dechlorinator can make things much easier for you. Seachem Prime is at the top of the list for dechlorinators and water conditioners.
I can safely say you're most likely not doing it wrong, but I can also say there's a much easier and simpler way of adding dechlorinator to your tank during a water change.

Hi! Thanks for being an inspiration to start this hobby. I've always liked your videos but I have a very technical question in regarding this video. Won't adding tap water (with a little bit of chlorine) also kill your beneficial bacteria? If so, then how is it safe to add the tap water directly to your tank? Even if you've already added the water conditioner, I don't think it can spread fast enough to your newly added tap water before it reaches and kills the tank's beneficial bacteria. I hope I'm making some sense. As always, thanks for your advice.

I was always skeptical about how pouring a chemical into water removes another chemical until I read the chemistry behind it. Completely safe for fish, and it binds with the chlorine and produces Sulphur gas which evaporates quickly. Amazing stuff.

When I do a water change can I add the conditioner to the tank and then put the new water immediately after it or do I have to wait some time?
@ldk461
@ldk461 3 месяца назад
I used to do the pre change buckets and is hard for me now bc of physical issues. I only have a 30 gallon but even a few buckets then step ups to tank is hard. My brand is not one of the ones you mentioned It is Nutrafin. Is one brand better than the other? Just restarted hobby a few months ago and had purchased a red tail shark to go in with my neon tertras I had to move to him but just him to the 30. So took out a few gallons from smaller tank brand new water quite the job. A wee bloom not bad today waiting to get a few tank mates for him. I know technically I did this backwards as far as usually adding the shark last re territory and other fish but I had no choice. He was why I bought the tank. WE don't have a lot of space or Id have a much bigger tank but will enjoy my smaller ones.ty for great videos

Hey Kev, another great video. Just wondering, I read both the labels for Prime and Safe. What's the difference between the two? Which do you prefer? I'm leaning towards prime because it's in liquid form, which I prefer. Thanks in advance.
@KaveManAquatics
@KaveManAquatics Год назад
They are both pretty much the same except that prime will also detoxify some metals that safe will not. Also Safe is very concentrated and typically used for bigger tanks, 100G +. Anything less than 100G stick with Prime 💪

I’m new to the hobby and my number one question was do I add dechlorinator for the entire amount or just the water change… instructions on the bottles aren’t always 100% clear. Thanks Kev! PS. You helped me manage my ammonia spikes, thank you!

Good to know. Question when adding fish what do you add for thats?
@KaveManAquatics
@KaveManAquatics 3 года назад
Adding Stability when adding new fish helps to boost the bacteria production you'll need for the increased bio-load. You could also add some stress guard to help keep everyone calm and the new fish less stressed.

Adding or adjusting decor does not need any stress coat. Dose Stress coat during your water changes to dechlorinate your tap water.

Question! I have a 75 gallon freshwater tank for about 8 months now, With a Fluval 407 Canister, with five medium size angelfish and some other small fish. I take really good care of my tank, but during my water change today, I got distracted with a delivery for about 40 minutes and I forgot to add in my prime!! I totally freaked out and hurried and added it! I’m so afraid I’ll loose my fish🤦🏻‍♀️😬

Hi Kev, can you help me understand why safe is safe to use when doing water changes since it doesnt take care of heavy metals like prime? If they fixed this then it would be easier to say that safe is a bulk version of prime. But just not sure if prime is still better?
@KaveManAquatics
@KaveManAquatics 7 месяцев назад
Heavy metals are rare in most tap water. If you’ve confirmed you have heavy metals then I would always use Prime instead.

How about the little 62 oz or so additions to my 75 gallon tank due to evaporative loss between water changes? Should I add a drop of conditioner? Seems trivial to me.

Most likely is. With that little addition Im sure your tank will be fine.

I have a big tank like what you have. But I am tired of changing water. I want an alternative for that. Ok what do you think of adding plants . Is that a good option? insted of changing water Thanks for the info
@KaveManAquatics
@KaveManAquatics 3 года назад
Adding live plants will help in reducing nitrates. But that still doesnt replace a water change. New water replenishes minerals that your fish need. Here's what I use for water changes that makes things much easier - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5T4t_PdXCQw.html

Hello! Very useful informations in your videos! I want to ask you something as a newbie. I have a 30lt tank .I have plants and wood and gravel inside. I don't know the complete amount of water inside.But when I do a water change I change 8lt.How much amount of prime should I use? You say I need to count over 30lt of water. Am I right? Hope you answer.But even if you don't thank you for your videos!!!

When it comes to prime always dose for the entire volume of water your tank can hold. regardless of how much you change.
