If you own an Akita, pet insurance is a must! Here is what we use:
bit.ly/3x1R6XO
"When should I neuter my Akita?" Neutering your Akita (or any dog) can be a very controversial topic. Of course neutering has been the standard for the last 40+ years, and it's to the point where people don't even question it.
If you adopt a dog from a shelter, there's a good chance they'll already be neutered (or "fixed" as some people say, a term we don't like). If you purchase an Akita from a breeder as a companion, there will likely be a requirement in your contract to neuter your Akita between 18-24 months.
If you intend to bring your Akita to daycare or puppy training, some facilities will not allow your Akita in unless they've been neutered.
The Akita Club of America says you should neuter your Akita at 12 months.
So what's the right answer? When should you neuter your Akita (if you neuter them at all?), and what can you expect for the cost of the neutering and recovery time?
In this video, we hope to answer all of your neutering questions when it comes to Akitas!
You can also read more about neutering your Akita on our website:

Really glad you got the gastropexy done at the same time. We did the same with Kinglsey, got them both done when he was 18 months old. The peace of mind that comes with bloat protection alone is worth it. Great video.

I had an Akita male for 17yrs Seminole.. got him at 7weeks … He was and always the breed I would choose. I will say an Akita isn’t the pet for someone that doesn’t have time for them. I agree with everything that you’re saying and more. We were Devastated when he passed. These dogs aren’t for everyone. I did get ours neutered at the age 2yrs. We did wait cause I wasn’t sure if I wanted to have puppies and we traveled and he went with us. So I decided not. But he was the biggest Akita I ever seen in person and people would be in shock and awe over him in person. He was attention getter ( don’t get one for that reason). Only if you’ve owned one will understand what I’m saying. RIP Sim… we miss you so much.❤️❤️❤️😭😭😭. I wanted to add when you said the word neutered …. He turned and looked at the camera… just saying they are smart!!! 😂

Highly recommend the gastropexy even if you don't neuter. Odds of a dog over 100lbs getting bloat is 20%. Those odds with a stomach tack are only about 5%, and the fatality rate drops from 80% down to about 3%. Thanks for subscribing!

Thanks Tony. Beorn is about 10.5 months and we're probably going to wait until early next year to have him neutered, per the contract. Good to know about him not wanting to lay down, we didn't have our last akita, Ronin, neutered, so I don't have experience. And I'll definitely be asking for some anti anxiety medicine and getting a donut rather than using our old cone, Ronin always hated it soo much when he had a hot spot.

Great informative video. Not relevant to the video but wanted to ask if any other of his litter mates had entropion in their eyes and if the breeder warned you about it prior to getting him and if they’re still continuing to breed with the same damn and sire. Having an Akita and family with Akitas it’s interesting to see the variance of ethics in breeders.

@TheAkitaLife 2 года назад
As far as I know none of the puppies have it, and it was a one off litter with that particular dam and sire. The litter was sired by Buster of Okami Akitas in Illinois and the Dam was Holiday of Paradise Akitas in Idaho.

I have an Akita Husky. I got him neuter when he was 2yrs old. He used to lick his incision to the point that it opened up a little. I had to keep giving him some Benadryl (recommended by the vet) to help him with the itch n not to lick. It took over two weeks for that to heal. Even with the cone collar he would get to his incision. I’m glad I got him neuter. He doesn’t have the sex drive like he used to before the surgery. He did gain about 30 pounds after the surgery. Hope it doesn’t happen to ur dog. Not sure if that is normal or not. He is on a diet control food now recommended by the vet. Lost 2 pounds in the last week so hope he keeps losing the weight.
@TheAkitaLife
@TheAkitaLife 2 года назад
That sounds like a tough time! We are very fortunate he didn't lick at all. He's already all healed up and back to his normal activities. We'll definitely keep an eye on his weight, but we're pretty active. Usually walk him 3-4 miles a day, and go hiking on the weekends.

Poor guy, that must have been a rough day for all of you. Glad to hear everything turned out alright. I'm having a tough time setting up the appointment for my guy (Winston). He's about 14 months. My last Akita I didn't have it done. But I did sign a contract with the breeder to have it done and feel obligated to. Although, I personally don't agree with it. I said I'd do it. Don't get me wrong I'm not judging anyone that has it done. I just feel like it has very little significant purpose for the dog. The gastroplex procedure is interesting to me I've never heard of it really. Bloat does concern me with my new Akita. He will sometimes eat or drink too fast causing him to vomit. So I may look into it some more thanks for the info.
@TheAkitaLife
@TheAkitaLife 2 года назад
Typically the reason breeders want you to do it, is because they don't want you to stud your dog without the proper health certificates and show pedigree. You may want to look in to getting a vasectomy. They're not as common for dogs, but it can be done. That will satisfy the breeder, but also leave Winston's hormones in tact. In retrospect, I probably would have wanted to do that for Haga, however we needed to get the polyp out, and i didn't want him to have multiple surgeries, and our vet didn't do vasectomys. I would definitely recommend the gastropexy (aka stomach tacking). It was a fairly minimal procedure, and it greatly reduces the risk of fatality due to bloat. I know of 4 people who lost their Akitas to bloat within the last year. When it happens, it happens fast, and even if you get to the ER quickly and the do surgery, the outcomes are poor.
@humanpuck2
@humanpuck2 2 года назад
Gastropexy is great, especially since my boy always gets excited and wants to play after he eats. That's when the biggest risk for bloat arises, too much activity after eating or drinking.

@@TheAkitaLife Yeah, I know why the breeder does it but I agree with you about being a responsible dog owner. I don't think it's hard to keep your dog from breeding with other dogs. The vasectomy is a good idea but its hard to find a vet to do it.

I'm nervous, I'm taking my 16 month old Akita to get neutered next Monday, and yes I had a contract that said I would have him neutered between 18-24 months, but lately he's been showing some aggressive behaviours towards people and it makes me nervous about him possibly biting someone. I'm hoping this might calm him down a bit, and have talked to the breeder about it and he said to go ahead have him neutered now. I don't know if there is much information about neutering helping with an aggressive dog. From what I have found out Akitas are prey driven dog as mine would love to chase the rabbits we see on our walk. I guess I will always have to have him leashed from taking off and doing whatever. I appreciate your video and the insight you gave on what to expect from this procedure. I hope all goes well!

@TheAkitaLife
@TheAkitaLife Год назад
@@c.jbowen2461 It's been a common belief for many decades that neutering improves behavior, but more recently when actual research has been done, the data is pointing to that not being the case. The testicles produce testosterone which is an important hormone for confidence. The theory of why neutering actually makes aggressive behavior WORSE is because fear is a big trigger in reactive behavior, and if your dog lacks confidence due to lack of testosterone, they are more likely to become aggressive out of fear.

@@TheAkitaLife Very interesting. I did speak to the veterinarian that is doing the procedure. Said there more Pro's than Con's. @TheAkitaLife

@@c.jbowen2461 unfortunately the dogma in this country on neutering is decades old. Consider the fact that neutering is fairly uncommon in most countries outside the US, but those same countries don't have higher rates of dog bites, attacks, etc... Also consider that if you hire a trainer and it doesn't work, you can always neuter later, but if you neuter first....well you can't take that back. As far as the contract goes, that's to prevent unsanctioned breeding. I'm sure the breeder would be fine with vasectomy.

In my opinion Do not neuter or spay your dogs, at least not in a young age. I have a female Huskita and yeah the periods suck but that’s part of being a pet parent. I also have a puppy akita and he’s probably never gonna get neutered. I had a Husky a few years ago and when she got spayed her life just dwindled by the months. Eventually she got very fat and lethargic and had to be put down. She did get spayed late however and lived to be 13 but her final years where horrible and again in my opinion all those myths about castration being good for your dog are lies. All they want is to lower the risk of unwanted pregnancies and that is your responsibility in the first place.

@TheAkitaLife
@TheAkitaLife 2 года назад
No change in growth. Growth is primarily regulated by growth hormone which is controlled by the pituitary gland. Testosterone does have some role in growth hormone excretion but you likely won't see a major difference in dog size by neutering or not neutering. Our dog did however become more reactive, probably due to lack of confidence in the absence of normal Testosterone levels. Neutering isn't the worst thing you can do to a dog, but I do wish vasectomy become standard practice over gonadectomy

Banfield is fine for light duty, but certainly not surgical and especially major surgical events. You should be using a facility with personnel and experienced doctors capable of surgical events. Having been a breeder you should also be aware that within a family unit the female will become the Alpha at or around 5 years of age. Furthermore, the female should be retired after a 3rd breeding or less. Have any medications filled by your own pharmacy as they are less costly. Be consistent with a top veterinarian. Always do your homework so can write down your questions to ask your vet. Learn how to train your American Akita with a trainer that may have experience with the breed. Do your part or you should choose another easier breed to own. While my American Akitas were known for their temperment and good health, they are unique in every way and will require your commitment. This is not just any dog that will fetch your slippers or the newspaper. They will not. When you go to look at an American Akita to buy make certain you see the parents to gain insight into temperment and what you are about to get yourself into. All of my knowledge is based on experience and I have much to offer. Furthermore, it is an absolute tragedy and disgrace that so many of these majestic, one of a kind dogs are dumped off only to be put down because people who had no business owning an American Akita; because they could not manage them soon after they were no longer a puppy. I also blame breeders that breed for the money and have no care for their puppies/dog's welfare. You have much to inform people considering owning an American Akita.
