They are so stubborn its unreal. So loyal and protective with their master or in many cases they own you. I've had 3 of these majestic animals and will have no other dog, as I truly love the American Akita, but definitely not a beginner dog. They are loyal to only one owner and will only do what the owner will ask. Lee are truly one-of-a-kind dog and don’t forget when they shed their coat It will be in absolutely everything, and I mean absolutely everything in your food or your toothbrush in your teeth up your nose. It’s Leave Home the Akita condiment it goes with everything.

My son s family have a gorgeous Akita brindle in color. Kona Ice Cream full papered name. Just a wonderful pup and I’m lucky enough to dog sit from time to time. Her buddy is a beagle name trout. What a pair and put my 17 year old chihuahua in the mix just because . Pups are the absolute best.

I have had three in total. They were all super sweet and fantastic with my children. They are a lot of work. Mine were very protective and loyal but never aggressive. Akita's are one of my favorite breeds. The last one I had was a 130 pound lap dog. I miss him even after 22 years.

I got an American Akita as my first dog, nearly ten years ago. She was a pain years 0-3, but at ten she is the most fantastic dog ever. If you don’t have time, do not get one, they require time and love. My saki is an amazing dog

I have the atypical male Akita, Hiko. As far as humans are concerned to him there can be only ONE! I got him at 12 weeks old, he's now 12 years old. When I got him I had three cats and my girlfriend's little dog. Never had any issues between them. He treated them all like family. He is now the only one left. He did like other dogs and wanted to play until there was a challenge. I used to take him to the dog park when he was younger until most of the dogs started fights with him. He has put into submission 2 pitbulls, 2 huskies, 1 shepherd, 1 Airedale terrier and 2 black labs. And to this day he hates black labs for some reason. Akitas are one tough breed. I love them.

Thank you for sharing this. I have a 12 year maltese little girl that I saved the day she was born. Her mother ate her siblings and her owner was going to throw her in the trash with what was left of the litter. I bottle fed her and named her Vida, "life" in Spanish. We have never been apart since day 1, minus you know normal circumstances. She has seen me through the death of my husband, grandparents, both mother and step-mother, several close friends, and most recently my hero, my father. So as you can imagine, she has done way more for me than i can claim for her. Her normal vet (I trusted for 30 years) passed in 2020. And we went through covid. Wow! Finding vet care was rough. I came across Banfield and i was impressed so that's her new home medically speaking. And they have been wonderful!!! Well Halloween night vida went to sleep and when she woke up her throat looked funny. I sat her up and oh my!!! She had this huge lump as big as a softball under her chin. She couldn't yawn it was so big! I call Banfield and they run tests and they wanted to run more tests to send to an outside lab more advanced but i didn't have the funds for that (I'm widowed, disabled and on a fixed income) so we treated her with a stout shot of antibiotic that wouldbein her system a couple weeks. I was to use warm compresses a couple times a day to reduce swelling. Well, it worked. I guess the "shot" wore off and overnight (YES! OVERNIGHT!!) we are back with a squishy sack on her neck under her chin. Back to Banfield we go. Well more testing. The Vet wants to find out if it's a situation that is acute or chronic. That requires intensive lab work, once again, I can't fund it. So back to shot in rump and oral antibiotics and steroids to give at home with warm compresses for swelling. Well, success! Or so I thought. Swelling left, skin tightened up, appearance normal. Whew! Relief! Meds cleared her system, wham! Here we are again!! Back to Banfield. This time i was told it was a salivary gland that was either ruptured from an injury or there was a blockage. So this time they shaved the mass and i guess stuck her with something to pull as much of the fluid as able and then flushed it. They wrapped her with bandage, injected her with antibiotics and sent e home with oral antibiotics, steroids, and pain killer. And of course keep the warm compresses going. It all cleared up again in just over a week but the skin did not return to normal. So now she has this flabby loose skin on her neck. About two weeks later, like the week before Christmas, we went back to Banfield. They repeated the same treatment, drain, flush, inject antibiotics, send home with oral meds. I'm thinking well its definitely chronic and i don't need an advanced lab to tell me. But she's tired of it and so am I. The last two rounds besides repeating previous treatments she's been on two 28 day regimens of antibiotics and steroids, etc. And now here we are again. I've been treating her since may 27th with a liquid antibiotic, the same as the pill Banfield had her on, she had leftover from one of her dogs. Vida hasn't been seen in person yet and the medicine is not clearing it up but its holding it at bay. I told the Vet this has to stop. He proposed surgery to insert a drain that will stay in, and theres still risk of failure, until such time as there is no longer anything coming out of it then it can be removed and hopefully the ruptura will close and not present any more problems. The surgery is close to $1500. And I understand he was utilizing everything he could off her wellness special care plan I pay for every month for her. I might as well wish for a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. Now I question the surgery. How much more expensive could it be to remove the gland completely and solve the problem once and for all than it costs to put the drain in that doesn't promise to fix it?? And yet i have other voices bending my ear reminding me i don't have that kind of money and probably won't be able to put that much together before it's too late anyway so since its just a dog (JUST a dog?????), i should just put her down. W**???? NO! I WILL NOT just put her down!! She's still romps and plays and windsurfs and chases toys and tell the neigborhood what she thinks, etc. She's not laying down, she has a gland problem!! And I can't picture my life without her. We have been through so much together, she has brought me through more than I could ever repay. She's my friend, my best companion and now that I know what the problem is she's with someone who can't afford the fix. And no, I'm not sharing all this to get sympathy or anything else like that although i am going to swallow my pride and attempt one of those go fund me things because she's worth it and she deserves it, but I am sharing my journey through this nightmare to thank you #1 for putting your story out there to help someone else have something to challenge the Vet with so you don't go for months wondering if the nightmare will end and your pet be ok. And also to just help someone else who has battled this for too long to see they aren't alone in walking it out long term. See you made it clear it only had to be a one surgery fix yet your baby had two surgeries. THAT is what got my attention. If i have to take leave of my senses and swallow my pride to struggle and cry and plead and beg to try to come up with the funds for the surgery to insert a drain that could fail when a one time surgical procedure to completely solve the problem for good by removing the gland is the right answer, than it cannot possibly cost muc😮h more for the permanent fix than the quote I've been given without promise of solution. So I thank you for lifting the fog from my cloudy vision. I'm aiming for the one surgery option that I would not have known about but for you. So hey folks!! If you and yours are in my and Vida's shoes, enough is enough! Pay attention to this guy and look it all up for yourself!! He's right!! We did not have to go through all this and neither did our buddies!!! Don't be mad just be glad someone shared the news we needed to know!! Be blessed all!!!

You are right and right, my Marcel died in my hands, heart attack, he was 18, and he was my child. You do something very important to educate the public about these dogs. They are NOT city dogs, I live in NH, and he had vast spaces to run and play. They love snow, in big winter storms he didn't want to come in the house, so he spent the night outside, my wife used to cook for him stews with all sorts of meat, you're right, is definitely not for everyone They need special environment, and yes, they have strong personality. Yours, looks happy
