Keith, I am watching your journey 7 years behind. I recently came across Finn’s channel and wanted to follow your journey. I cheered you on through the whole video. I took my family to Europe for 5 years when the 6 kids were basically teenagers. I got a lot of the same reactions. We returned almost 20 years ago and my kids still thank us for that experience. They have been world citizens since that adventure. Your children are also now. It’s a gift that is life changing and enriching. Way to be 🎉❤🎉

Considering all the dangers to kids on land. School shootings, drug addiction, car wrecks. There's a million ways for them to die. You can't keep them in the bubble wrap forever. & you're literally spending 24/7 with your kids. The nay sayers can't say that. I admire sailing families they're getting a family connection that you can't get on land. I've been following your journey from the beginning. Love your boat and your kids are great. Thanks for sharing! Have a blast & be safe.

My grandpa used to say, "whatever you do, half the people will like you for it, the other half will hate you for it, so at the end of the day, you might as well do what you want." I think y'all embody that ethos.

I was surprised family and friends were that against your decision to take time off and sail. What a great opportunity of a lifetime for a family. Probably will be the greatest time ever once looking back. I can't imagine regretting the decision to set sail with family. What those kids are learning is immeasurable.
@websurfer44

People who sail that aren't retired all tend to say the same thing, you'll never be ready - just do it. You could have left the kids home with grandparents or other family members but you chose to bring them along and let them explore the world from a boat as a family. I bet they thank you over and over for that in the years to come! When we are kids most of us live in a fishbowl called school and think it was the most important world in the world. As we age and go off to live life we learn that fishbowl was just that; life is much bigger. As long as your being the best parents you can be and are helping your kids grow and learn to become great adults; you have nothing to worry about. Keep up the good work.

“The Matrix is a system, Neo. That system is our enemy. But when you're inside, you look around, what do you see? Businessmen, teachers, lawyers, carpenters. The very minds of the people we are trying to save. But until we do, these people are still a part of that system and that makes them our enemy. You have to understand, most of these people are not ready to be unplugged. And many of them are so inured, so hopelessly dependent on the system, that they will fight to protect it. I think the turning point for your trip was when you and your kids went to visit the orphanage. Those types of adventures are very teachable moments for your kids. They are learning lots of life skills from sailing such as the responsibilities standing watch, learning to be self sufficient, and having learned different cultures around the world. Plus I bet they are good at geography by reading maps for navigating.

My husband and I have recently discovered your channel, and have nothing but respect for you and your children. Well done indeed! Thank you for sharing your life and stories. No doubt you are inspiring many others to take the red pill. My dad did that for us, by moving my siblings and I to the UK many, many years ago. He didn’t want his children (5 total) growing up and only knowing Alabama as a way of life. The world exploded open and life has since been an exciting experience. For that, I’ll always be thankful and grateful to my fab father for giving us such a gift. It’s not a huge comparison to your life as you are teaching your children. It’s brilliant that your kids are learning HOW to live their own life and all that entails. No big house, flash cars, loads of meaningless swag, expensive holidays abroad nor posh schools will teach your children a life well lived. Again, Mr & Mrs Whitaker - Hats off!

My grandparents saved their whole life for that perfect time...my grandma got sick and died at 65. They never got to enjoy what they saved their whole lives for. Me, my husband and daughter travel all over the US in our camper (were not full timers yet, some day) but It’s an extraordinary experience my daughter will never forget. My son died (only child) 5 years ago and I would give anything to have done what you guys are doing with him. The time you have with your kids is priceless. While some of the time it may be a little unpleasant to watch your kids experience something for the first time or for that matter just look up and see them in close proximity would be perfect. BTW I love your videos and as a catamaran owner I understand the need for extra space.

Great talk! 45 years ago my girlfriend and I dropped out of college and took off sailing. I bought that first boat with the downpayment from a $2500 credit card ($4000 boat). We left from Lake Erie, had NO GPS, NO VHF, NO charts. We used a Texaco road map of the East Coast that happened to have some ICW bouys marked on it. Up Lake Erie, the Erie Canal, down the Hudson River and ICW and Bahamas. We had no money. Worked as needed, fished cocoanuts out of the ICW for food, picked mangos when we could and caught fish. Within a year I got a job in FL, was driving a sweet BMW MG before selling that boat and car to buy another boat. Sailing back north we sold the 2nd boat in Annapolis, went back to school, got jobs, had 3 kids, started 2 high-tech biz and 20 years later - did it again. With 3 kids and my now girlfriend/wife all on a Tartan 37. It was great! You're living real life! Now the kids are all grown and gone, the wife re-married and I'm hoping to do it one more time with my faithful dog. Saving my Soc Security pennies for a boat. This time I'm not coming back to the US! Keep sailing... Mitch in Annapolis

When I first started watching Zatara, it was more to witness the great train wreck that I was sure to follow. What I have come to love about Zatara is everything you just mentioned Keith. I respect you for having the courage to take your family on this great adventure and I see how you both take all the precautions to award safety. I have enjoyed seeing the kids grow as people and how they have come to appreciate what the family is doing. Sure, there's hard times, frazzled nerves and in such close quarters the lack of personal space is trying. But the realities are there are things in everyday life that are as or more dangerous in the normal city environment than you will experience on a boat. Love you all, and stay safe. PS: you posted a video a while back (Ep. 25) where you asked the kids their thoughts about life on a sail boat. I would like to see a follow-up on that video and get their perspective today.

Hi! Late to the party, but... nice to be here! Good on you for taking the plunge despite what everyone else said. We (wife and 7 yo son) quit our jobs at beginning of 2021 and travelled for 8 months as a transition to a new life as business owners. While our adventure wasn't quite as daring or extensive as yours, it required the same mindset to break out of the box. However, we received nothing but admiration and encouragement from all our friends (such good people!). As many of them said, most people talk about that fantasy, few actually do it. So, the lesson there is... go do it! Congratulations on keeping it going.

Keith, Renee - you two have done an amazing job with your choices, kids and life! Do not let the opinions of others interfere with your dreams and plans for yourselves or your family. There are no guarantees of a “tomorrow” and you are exposing yourselves and your kids to experiences that you’d never get otherwise. We appreciate what you’ve done and your willingness to share your experiences along the way with those of us who tune in! I’m disappointed to hear that you’ve had issues with family on your life choice to sail the world; that’s a bit surprising but that’s life sometimes. Keith and Renee, people are supposed to be pioneers and explorers. What you and your family are doing is absolutely amazing for taking that giant leap and just going. That's what life is about, risks and challanges. If being stuck in a concrete jungle just to make money and be in a routine is being responsible, man.... I don't want it. The best learning tools are to get off the beaten path and explore. Your kids will always have this experience to better prepare them for whatever world awaits them in the future. As for your vlogs, I think they're great. Open and honest without all the fake theatrics.

Hola, I watched quite a few of your episodes. Great stuff! What you guys stated about people thinking you are crazy, criticizing etc etc. We can very much relate to. We moved to puerto vallarta mexico from California 15 years ago kids dogs and all, sold our properties boats etc up north. Our 3 kids whom are now adults are amazing empathetic and hard working, multi cultural bi lingual etc. We have been boaters all our lives especially me sailing boating in Sweden since a small child. After 5 years with no boat here we got the fever again, so just purchased a 39 foot Sweden yachts. Our plan is to start by cruising mexico and sea of Cortez. Being based here in vallarta is a great staging point. I am hoping our kids will run our businesses insurance and real estate company’s without hiccups. Lol.. Ideally at various points they can take turns with their significant other join for a week or so. As well as our grand kids. Wife and I are now late 50’s so I want to go now while feel physically comfortable dealing with tough days and long nights. Hope to see you guys at some point on the water.

Pretty honest analysis, thanks. Yes, I’d agree, fear and peer pressure have probably killed more dreams than failure has. Us westerners are a strange bunch. We’re addicted to convenience and we’re fearful of the unknown. I guess, as a result we tend to miss opportunities and just stay put in our little comfort zones until it’s too late. Happy journeys!

Well another well candid vlog. I have been following you guys from the start. Just listening to Jack and his out look proves that this is not an ordinary 15 year old . That my friends comes from parenting, responsibility, accountablity. You would be hard pressed to find such a insitefull young man as he is . And at 15 really what more can you say ...seriously Hang in there there is still a hell of a ride ahead of you Cheers

I agree 1000% with you. There is never a perfect time for anything. Plus if you wait too long you might not have the strength & energy to do the work. You gotta do what’s right for you because it’s your life. How many kids get to grow up this way? Most people don’t really feel alive. They work 9-5 with 2 days off. Feeling free & alive, invigorated, healthy, adventurous, confident & using all you’ve got to sustain, is living. You’re right, they don’t know because of their endoctrined narrow minded way of thinking. If they could only imagine & come to life too. What a beautiful way to live!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great episode! Really good that you have the intelligence and, particularly, the confidence, to talk aboutyour inner feelings and the conflicts that have arisen with family and friends when you undertook this great adventure. Know that you are, in this moment, exactly where you are supposed to be. Without a doubt. Keith and Renee, as well as the kids, will reap enormous rewards from this trip, not only the ups and downs and joys and fears of the experience, but you will discover that you have built wisdom and, above all, strength of character, for both yourselves and your children, that will stand you in good stead for a lifetime. I salute you for a magnificent decision. Jim

The question comes at some point in life as to when how much is enough... and enough for what. Life is something else and realizing this is the greatest gift money can give you once you made some

Keith & Renee; I for one am very jealous. As you've shown, you have to follow your heart. If people can't support that, their problem. Your children will thank you for the rest of their lives and hopefully will be in a position as adults to do the same for their children.

7,3k Have seen you guys today. I`m not the only one watching:) I have to say some words again. I have to honor the mom now. I notice that the mom (Renee) fighting and does a great afford to honor Keith during the overseas sailings. It`s really important for her to keep up with Keith and refuses to quit/give up or disappoint him. Who is making her do that, or who is telling her this?? It`s just so strange to see people practice these huge values in reality. It`s something I love about this videos. It`s so many videos out there with people cursing, yelling, fighting and are showing out really bad behavior. These people who does that have already lost their sailing adventure. It`s all about trying. We all fails all the time, but raise up then, and try again. Renee says in this episode: Quik to say "I`m sorry". If only people knew this, and practice this in their relationships. They would have a lot more victories. I wonder, who guides this family? Thanks for showing something different. It`s wonderful! Love you!! Good luck Zatara!!

My opinion: Taking the kids out to sea to explore the world is the best and most loving thing one can do! If I had kids I would not for a second want them to be stuck and indoctrinated into the slavery system. I would want my kids to be as free and independent as possible. Much love to you guys!!!

"Friends" who cant stand you all being happy remove the need for enemys. There is a saying in german i like "Jeder sieht wenn ich betrunken bin, aber keiner sieht wenn ich Durst habe" which i translate to "Everybody sees if i am drunk, but no one notices if i am thirsty" After watching nearly all of your videos i never had the impression that your kids are not in the best hands. You give them the chance to see things and collect experiences not many get to see. They get to know how diverse the world actually is and how normal that is. If that knowledge were widespread, the world would be a better place.

Hi Keith: Great statement, I can not agree more with you. It is unfortunate that sometimes in situations in which you would expect your "friends" to support your decision you encounter only bad comments and discouragement. I have had the same experience. I believe some of those "friends" are jealous of that you are doing what you want to do instead of continuing in the rat race. I admire your decision to take your wife and kids and see the world, this experience will bring all of you more together and the memories are just priceless.

Kudos to your family and utmost respect to the two of you. Thankfully my kids are through college and on their life journeys; but, if they were your kids ages; I'd get them out of the public indoctrination system immediately and into home school immediately. ... and you guys have taken it to the next level. You will never regret this and your kids will thank you for the honest view of the world and a real and useful education. Stay the course.

agree. Education today is using yesterday's playbook. Kids need to be involved and engaged, not taught. They can get every tidbit of information with a few clicks these days. Wisdom from experience and engagement with the world should be the new playbook. Great speach from Jack Ma at Bloomberg Global Forum on this topic

I have followed ya'll since the first episode and I have always been impressed with you, Renee and your kids. My GF and I have a 2 year plan to head south under sail (wish us luck!). I'm lucky to come from a family that has lived on the Chesapeake Bay for centuries so I have not had much at all in the way of push back to the idea of gong to sea. But CJ (my GF) is from the Chicago burbs and has NEVER had anything to do with water other than the occasional dip inna pool, but even her friends have been overall amazingly supportive of her joining me on my dream. They have their fears and concerns of course, but that's just common sense. But they are HAPPY for her to have found a guy who HAS a dream and is working and dedicated to making it happen... and she is just as dedicated and working just as hard. I cannot help but wonder if all those naysayer are really, deep down inside, just jealous of you for having the BALLS to follow your dream and share it with your kids. Keep at it and to hell with those who would hold you back my friend!! Good on ya!
