I’m in MN as well. Converting an AG field…. It was corn last year. I strategically frost seeded switch grass in spots for screening and it’s popping big time. I have been waiting to spray but so far nothing for weeds in the food plot (old corn field). I’m guessing because it was corn last year I have a nice head start as far as no weeds…. Buckwheat might be going out in mid week. A little early, but with the way the rain is forecasted I’m gonna take advantage.
@@tfrost33elkhunter I’m southeast of Rochester, this weather’s really turned the corner, and my hopes of a HD screening are running out of time! Gotta get busy-
@@kurtpearson2793 not too far from you in Mankato. I think we are golden for the HD Screen. Everything I’ve read says we have plenty of time still. It likes warmer dryer soil. Doesn’t like cool and wet….
New to buckwheat , can I plant in may and let it go till Sep. when I plant my fall plot ? I know that it'll reseed hoping that I can catch before it reseeds in the fall again .
Hey Steve! Couple things. Depending where you live, one frost and it’s most likely dead. So planting early could just be a waste of money. You may need time for weed control before planting anyway if you’re spraying. And also, if you get all those weed seeds buried and the last spraying doesn’t really kill them (like if they don’t grow right away) then you could have trouble with your plot. But! Sometimes a little buckwheat in a fall plot ain’t all that bad. If needed you could disc lightly. We usually plan for 6-8 weeks of growth per planting.
I sprayed glysophate today and a darn thunderstorm line came through a couple hours later🤦♂️ wasn’t planning on it but going to check it out in a couple weeks to see if I have to apply more sooner than later. Recently I planted corn by hand to separate the 2 acre plot so deer can’t see what’s there without checkin* it out. About a hundred yard total strips with five rows of corn planted every 3.5 inches…. That’s 500 yards I was on my knees planting!! No sympathy from my wife when I told her how sore I was! Got the good old that’s what you get for acting like your 19! If this works next year there has to be a better way! Things we do for deer huh? Thanks for the video!
Lol how come our wives never understand!? I believe it’s earthway who makes a little push behind single row planter for a couple hundred bucks. Check that out and save the back! I’m with ya there
@@TradgerFarms on a side note there had to be ten dead deer on the side of the road from Wapacua to Kohler…. Probably last years fawns trying to find their new range…. Natures way but sad to see!
Hope you're enjoying the holiday weekend. Looking for a little guidance. I have a clear-cut that's full of blackberry, grape and hardwood regen...wondering if I should chop pockets down for bedding or if deer will readily use it as is, seems very thick to me. I know Jeff talks about bedding pockets or regen pockets, so just trying to see if cutting things down would enhance where deer bed. Thanks in advance and keep up the great content.
Hey Paul! If there are huge swaths of it that the deer will not cut through because it’s that bad then yes I would either cut lanes through it (hopefully towards a treestand) or if it’s quite big and it’s a good spot for bedding then you could cut some 30ft or so pockets out for them and hopefully get some better regen
@@TradgerFarms got the trails running everywhere and they live the blackberry and briar regen...guess I'm thinking they need somewhat clear ground to bed, maybe not...a lot more daylight pictures this year already.
@@TradgerFarms yeah, I have a clover plot. It is starting to get some weeds coming up way more than I can pick that’s why I was kind of curious any suggestions on that?
Typically rolling it has not worked unless you had a pretty professional crimper. I could of tried to mow at the right time to kill it but it’s at all sorts of different stages around the linear plot. Instead of it still popping up in places I just preferred to kill it and overseed later where needed. All valid points though for sure
