Hey Tech! It is I, the legally blind accountant with enough money and severe eye strain that prevents me from enjoying my gaming PC most of the time. I’ve missed a ton of game time to eye strain over the 10 months I’ve had my 7800X3D + 4090 PC, but sometimes I remember the 20-20-20 rule and step outside often enough in the day to feel better. When I do, man oh man, the top of the line PC is awesome, whether I’m juggling huge Excel spreadsheets, playing laggy tower defense games, or playing Cities Skylines 2, it just runs. The power is there, the software is mature, and the experience is unrivaled. It’s better than a console at just working! My question is: I’m not sure when I’ll adopt a new game again, but I might keep building bigger in the games I play now. My 4090 is adequate to Cities. Should I continue to buy all the CPU every generation, or can I wait until Zen 6 to unlock more simulation headroom?

Ive had my 5900x since 2021 and i recently upgrade my 3070(and sold it for 300) to a 7900xt . I plan on riding this system at least until am6 starts cause i feel like im not gonna get the best value jumping mid way into am5. My 5900x with pbo and curve optimizer is more than sufficient for my upcoming needs along with the 7900xt. I feel like some people are having fomo with their parts lol. Mind you the previous desktop pc i built(my first ever build) before my 5900x was an i7860 and gtx 470 combo with 8gb ddr3 ram from 2010. Lol if i had waited for am5 i literally would have went from ddr3 to ddr5 as an upgrade lol but i really needed a computer for other things hence why unfortunately i hopped on am4 just as it was ending essentially. The reason for not upgrading sooner was because im in the military and me being out and constantly traveling and moving didn't give me time for upgrades.

I upgraded from an X99 system built in 2015 to 3800X in 2020. First time I ever took more than 18 months for a new system build since the mid 90s. I did midcycle to RTX 3070 close to year and a half ago but its been 4 years was thinkin new build time....... then 6 weeks ago when I started looking at pricing said forget it and just got a 5900X. Im with you, I will keep this until AM6 or if Intel does something interesting. I do not think I will feel bad about waiting. It will do everything I want it too until then.

@@45enoExactly holding on to hardware tell it’s old and irrelevant is a horrendous idea. I upgrade my 90 class GPU’s every 2 years so I can sell it for %85 of what I paid for. The same goes for motherboards and CPU’s as well. Just sell it every 3 years and do a bundle with CPU and motherboard. Aside from that why are you pairing a low end 6 core 7600 with a high end 670x? Up until a few months ago I was still running an i-5 6600k with a GTX 970. It still was abel to run most games I play just fine at 1080p. I bought an RTX 4080 to use with my 9900k but it was almost unplayable in Tiny Tina's Wonderland and Hell Let Loose, the stutter was absolutely off the charts. Switching to the 7700x helped so much and I am now having an awesome gaming experience. The 9900k paired well with my RTX 2080 Super but it was just bottlenecking my 4080 in certain games. I have an 1800x and 1080ti I think my motherboard (crosshair VI hero) has failled, screen froze and then died, now no display ouput or post, despite resetting the bios. my powersupply is an 850w, I was considering throwing money on the credit card and building a whole new system built to last again (as this has). I personally think the next gen of Ryzen and the 50 series cards will launch at the end of this year so would normally have waited. I'm thinking buying a crosshair VIII board (potentially a used one) and a 5800 which should then keep this system working and then building a whole new system at the end of the year.... Now though I'm wondering if it could be the graphics card - with no integrated graphics presumably you get no display if the graphics card goes?

400$ is the cost of TSMC making the chip not nvidia and on top of that you need to account for the euv machine duv machine electricity cost the salary of the engineer and specialist for tsmc . The cost for TSMC to make the chip + its profit will then be passed to nvidia , and nvidia will need to source vram .From the latest news i read in 2023 was 8gb of gddr6 cost around 27$ so 24gb of it will be 100$++ and on top of that you need labour cost for soldering the chips thermal paste application assembling , heat sink production cost , the cost of the gpu board , power delivery , warranty claims , profit , marketing advertising , paying linus tech tips to say good things , shipping and so on . and lastly it comes to your local supplier they will then mark up the price for profit .

@dianaalyssa8726
@dianaalyssa8726 3 месяца назад
If you can afford a new build do that. But if you are budget constrained or playing a game mostly cpu bound, 12600K still will blow your socks off regardless. Have a 12700K (219 and tax= 231) was my first upgrade from 9600K ($200). Cured my game stutters. 12900K also is pretty good ($319). Mom has a 12400F build I still have to assemble from a B760M board I shuffled from 12700K build, before 12600K got much cheaper. Sales prices would be a factor. I found Z board a bit better in not power limiting but for ram you will need to pair and pick whether to go DDR4 or DDR5. I went last year DDR5, but DDR4 kits are reasonable also. Thermalright PA120 are fine budget coolers. Have a TR FS/FC cooler I've yet to swap out or use in a new build. You can also flash the boards for 14th gen compatibility. You could carry over the 1070ti for now or do a new build if you have funds in the budget for a new gpu. Also if you are still using 1080P you can get away with less GPU perhaps though I mostly play older style games. I had my second gen doing HTPC 1080P x264 on the iGPU. I have a GPU family range from 1060-1070-7900XTX, you could always try the upgrade and just do the gpu later if it isn't enough. Changing to 1440P gaming & 4K media was the biggest need to upgrade personally, from 1080P (about late 2019-2020). There is a visual difference between graphics cards over the years in clarity of image gaming also.

I've been running DCS really well with a 5600X and RX 6700XT. You are already close to the limit of the performance of what the AM4 socket can deliver with the 5900X. Unless DCS starts to studer in heavy multiplayer online play you are still good to go. And since DCS introduced multi trending support a few months ago the sim runs even better than before.

I threw in my support for AM4 Platform when initial teething issues were ironed out. 6 blissful years with 3 PC's & 2 DIY Servers, my grandson has a 3900X/RTX2070oc, I use a 5900X/RX7900XT & the family Gaming PC is a 5800X3D/RTX3070Ti; the servers use a 1700X & 2700X CPU. Noticed pretty much nothing with a 4070 at 1440p except the 1% lows in WoW. The 5900x has been repurposed as a work machine to replace the old 6700k that I was using for. Not necessarily, but it can pay for itself. For me, I actually just bought a 5900x for $300 including tax from Canada computer because I have an existing am4 platform and I'm just cpu mining with it earning approximately $1 a day or 75 cents with the electricity cost. In less than a year, my cpu will be paid for or whatever price Bitcoin is at that time. You can also do that with any 7000 series if you want it to pay for itself. My gf bought a 7900 (Not the x because of the included wraith prism cooler) for $375 recently and while she's not using, she's cpu mining with it. The motherboard selection and prices are what's preventing me from upgrading to AM5 and I only do light gaming on my spare time, so I'm only using my 5600x that I bought from meta for $70 and a 3060 12 gb for $185.

I upgraded my 3080 to a 4090 after 2 years, pretty much only because of the Vram issue, otherwise a 3080 still works at 4k just fine. As for the 5900X, it's more of an issue for me than the 3080's low Vram, because once i've turned Ray Tracing off, there's nothing I can do to help performance for a bottlenecked CPU. Some graphics settings help, but most of the time it's so minor it's pointless, the 5900X is showing it's age in terms of core speed, but core count it's still overkill. I'm planning on getting a 9950X later this year or whenever it launched. I personally don't think the 13900k or 7950X or any 3D chip is enough of an upgrade for what they cost, it'd be totally fine if I didn't need to buy entirely new Ram. If I had DDR5 already or if they were DDR4 it'd be worth the upgrade. The 5900X pushes a 4090 enough on a 4k 144hz monitor that a 7950X3D or 14900K wouldn't impress me at all. The only game that's given me grief is Hogwarts Legacy, aside from that, I'm fine not utilizing my 4090, that just means when I upgrade my CPU, I gain both CPU and GPU performance.

I've got a 5950x and a 4090 with 64 gigs of DDR4 (I got an incredible deal on it at 700 off compared to normal pricing and managed to flip my 6900xt pretty well. For my creative needs and then for gaming this should be fine for a while. As time goes on I'll probably drop down settings at some point if things actually become unbearable at 4k. I'm completely replacing this system at the 6000 series from Nvidia (save for the super reliable 1100 watt titanium psu I've got probably. I'm going to downgrade that to a gold rated one before I flip it). Even if I wanted to upgrade I'm a marketing student specialised in making advertisements as an independent. I probably don't really have a choice considering my income unless I really grind out commission work for local businesses and manage to master getting my brand out there.

I think everyone should use their CPUs atleast the Ryzen 7 or i7 or above for 4-5 years. Then only you will get noticeable improvements. I saw person who upgraded from 4790k to 12700k. Its was worth the upgrade. I saw another person who went 4790k to 7700k than to 9900k than to 13700k. Thats just waste of money. Personally I have 5800x and it runs fine. yes there are limitation here and there but mostly I am all good. From 5800x I will use for 2 more years and then upgrade to 17th gen intel or Ryzen 11000.

4090 costs so much yes, "because they can" but there's more to it. Inflation, BOM cost increases and the tendency for new products with improved features and new features increasing the base price... But the biggest factor in all of this is the fact the company is publicly traded and they are beholden to those of us who own them; their #1 objective is to give a return on investment to the shareholders, and to do so with as much as a return as possible, so their duty is to stretch those prices as high as they can without impacting demand so much that revenue falls below where it would be with a lower price. If they aren't providing a return then I'm selling them, so they must attempt to extract as much value (i.e. currency) from their customers as feasibly possible without impacting demand/revenue negatively. That balance came at $1600 and for board partners even higher. The other biggest factor besides shareholders is the consumer and their willingness to spend that much. If the consumers had refused to buy you would see different pricing.

Correction, a 4090 will lose value when a 5080 comes out! Why? Because nVidia is absolutely not going to sell their 5090 for $1699, as I would bet money that $1999 would be the MINIMUM price! The 5080 will be the 4090's closest competitor, which will likely sell for around $1200-1300 because it will still have no competition in the market from AMD until RDNA4 comes out. That is "very little value" to lose for anyone that has been using their 4090 for 2 years already! In fact, I would say that it doesn't even pay for nVidia to release a 5080 until they have completely sold through all of their 4090 chips, and even then it might still be cheaper for them just to keep making the 4090...
@vigilant_1934

Except AMD isn't supposed to release anything above midrange for RDNA 4 so they'll likely be competing with the 5070 and below which, from I hear from Moore's Law is Dead, won't be coming out until 2025. Rumor has it that Nvidia will only be releasing a 5090 before the end of the year and AMD will only be releasing something around 7900XT performance for between $400 and $600. RDNA 5 is when AMD is aiming for the top end Nvidia competitor, according to leaks anyway.

How about Zen 5 16 cores on a single die not dual CCDs. Will AMD have that. Based on leaks no sadly. I am kind of between rock and hard place because I so badly want more than 8 modern homogeneous cores a single die on modern arhc, but no such options exists which is a shame. SO despite having the money for RTX 4090 easily, I a on 7800X3D and still only 8 cores because there no more than 8 core options of a homogeneous CPU and that gives me pause. But I may need to give hybrid arch a try. It appears no way around it for now or accept the bad dual CCD cross latency and also its own scheduling issues though no AMD thread director unlike Intel.
