About the best times to visit gem markets and the logic behind the hours. Optimize your time. Avoid being a schmuck by coming too early or too late. Song: Amari Szi Amari By: Csokolom
I do not think I have ever been quite so delighted with the sight of anything in my life. This makes me want to vacation there / ring journey type thing. Too quality, Peter. It is appreciated.
Hey you have earned a new subscriber. I am a college student (Finance) and I have been working in a pawn shop. I know a great deal about numismatics and collect coins. However, I am interested in gemology. Your videos have been very helpful and insightful. I also enjoy all of the Chinese cultural/language lessons as one day I may be working with many Chinese people potentially. I am looking for jobs in commercial real estate and I am licensed. Also interested in banking VC & PE. One day I would like to get into gem brokerage and pawn/jewelry shops. Also interested in restaurant/bar industry. I would like to build a real estate empire then retire from my job and run "hobby businesses" like jewelry or gems and antiques. Anyways I digress, I'm 22 so I have many years to build my empire. Thank you very much for your educational content.
Welcome to the channel~ keep building your knowledge on the items of value that most grab your attention. There is space for everyone, but only if you look with open eyes. Best of luck~
I love the JTC, It's a favorite. I did scout it early before lunch and returned to find interesting pieces after lunch and had a great solid day in there. Loving your series of great informative videos. I'm studying up for my next trip to Bangkok in December. Thank you!
Hello, I found you from your rainbow moonstone video. I have more if it than I know what to do with but I love looking at it. It took a long time buying it to really know what I was looking for as far as being clear with good flash. I get a lot of my gemstones from India. (Im in the US) it seems a lot of what I see on Etsy, etc is from India, even though it’s not necessarily mined there. I have always wondered how it gets from the mines, gets cut into cabs, faceted stones, beads, etc and gets distributed from there. Maybe something for a future video 😀
@@KC9RXP trade shows can be like that at times, and occassionally the general market, but not most of the time. Thank goodness for that. Can you imagine trying to make decisions on hundreds and thousands of dollars in gems while people are brushing up against your flank? No thanks.
Any advice 4 a gemology students living in australia starting his career Do you have any relationship with people in the trade here Love to hear from you and any recommendations would be greatly appreciated Keep up the good work Kind regards Franck Royet
Hi Franck ~ My suggestion to anyone getting into gemstones and gemology with an interest in the trade is, start cultivating your market as soon as possible. Find out what price point and types of stones they are interested in. There is no point in playing around with unheated rubies and no oil emeralds if people only want to spend a few hundred dollars for a stone. Likewise, there is no value in trying to sell cheap tourmalines to someone who wants to invest 10,000 in a rare stone to hold long-term. Get to know your clients and then learn as much as you can about the stones that appeal to them.
Hi Ann ~ generally Tucson is considered to be the most important global gem show (its actually a collection of gem and mineral shows that have overlapping schedules in the same general location). I myself have not yet gone, but it's on the list for the near future. Being located around such variety in Bangkok removed a certain amount of immediate "need" to go thus far.
@@GemologyforSchmucks I live nearby the Tucson Gem Show and have gone many times with a business license, which is different than the shows open to the general public. It is huge! There are tents set up with tables piled high with gems that put your vision of a pirate's treasure to shame. There are Vendors from around the world in many, many locations around the City of Tucson. The do bill it as the most important global gem show, and I've always wondered if that is true or not. I guess I'm spoiled because it's the only gem show I've attended so I have nothing to compare it to. It's pretty cool that the reputation is exactly what they say it is! I hope you get the opportunity to come! It will take probably more than a week to absorb it all! Thank you for your videos. I enjoy them all!:)
That really depends on what sort of gemstone that you want to buy, but a good place to start would be the Jewelry Trade Center on Silom Road, and the surrounding area. Many of the businesses within a 5-10 minute walk are all gemstone and jewelry related. If you'd like help sourcing a gem, send me an email at thegemshepherd@gmail.com and we can discuss further.
Rough stone buying is done almost exclusively in person. Even with trusted sellers, those who buy rough want to examine the stones in their hands with different lighting environments before they're willing to talk with their money. If you want to sell rough, you my advice is to go in person, or sell to a middle-man who will go in person. Cheers.
I'm sure some of them do have side hustles in addition to gems, and they may be all sorts of odd and sundry tasks. I myself am interested in a heaping variety of different outlets. There's a lot more treasure making in my future, i'll say that much.
There are periodic gem fairs in various nations in Europe that happen yearly [without pandemics etc], but i've not yet been to any of the "regular" gem markets, so i'll leave that for someone else to speak about.
There are many different types of markets. You’ll need to decide if you’re going to focus on retail or wholesale. If retail, what price point. Even very small top quality rubies can be tens of thousands of dollars wholesale. So that is to say: the path you choose will determine where and how you sell.
If you google "Jewelry Trade Center Bangkok" you'll have an address. There are plenty of other shops and gem and jewelry related businesses around this entire area.
