wear your felt when you want too... winter, parties, weddings, quinceineiras. its when you want to look good for your significant other. i wear my felt year roudn and im from deep south texas!
My grampa and uncles were real cowboys who lived on a ranch in Wyoming. They never wore straw and only felt year-round. There is no such thing as straw only for summer and felt only for winter. You would have two hats one for work and one for out on the town. The work hat could be straw or it could be felt. The out on the town hat was always felt. No one would go to dinner, wedding, dance in a straw hat no matter the seasan. If it was a BBQ or barn dance then straw would have been ok but my grampa would have still had a felt hat!!
My Mexican uncles on both sides of my family are cowboys. Have been for many generations. We wear straw hats year round. We wear felt on formal occasions or a high quality straw hat. I can’t imagine wearing felt during the summer in Mexico while also herding cattle and roping horses. I agree with you tho. I have two hats. My straw I use when we’re out working and my felt for more formal.
@@brian3786 I’m having trouble finding any quality straw hats that come in black (uniform required to be black), do you know of any places I should look, or are there any brands/hats you recommend?
Generally speaking, straw when it's hot, felt when it's cold. Felt when dressed up. Specific dates don't dictate when to wear them. Temperature does. I'm from Utah. Our seasons are pretty equally matched. Harley season/Hunting season.
Wear whichever hat whenever you want I'm from Michigan so a felt does just fine year round but if your from down south felt might not do good year round
I'm more of a straw cowboy hat person year round, but I'll say that I agree to the idea of felt (or leather) for formal occasions unless if of that of a wedding that you're personally the close friend or any kind of relative of the bride or groom in which you're better off without a hat on.
What has helped me: Unless weather changes either. Too hot or too cold Southern heat may adjust these by a month.Felt season: Oct 15 to March 15 Straw April 15 to Sep 15Transition dates: felt sept15 to Oct 15. Both hats optional during March 15 to April 15Wear either depending on weather conditions.
🤣🤣🤣🤣 ROFL 😆😆😆😆 This one is tooooo much. I went to see Chris LeDoux in Sept 2002 (after Labor Day).... My 2 friends and I were the only 3 in black felt hats, everyone else, including Chris, wore straw. I know this because another fan caught up to us and said we were the only black hats in a sea of straw and they could see us in the arena from the stands! I must be a rebel, wearing a felt hat after Labor Day north of Texas🤷♀️🤣
Haha thats funny. You wear what suits the weather and you wear what you got. Down here when it gets hot, it gets hot so a straw is mandatory in a sense lol
@@smackdadious I just literally LOL'd when you said there was fights about "hat season" I'm gonna go look that one up in the archives, it was probably started by some kid named Billy
@@smackdadious ok, I just watched another video about hat seasons, they said Easter. Things must be different up here, our rule is "it doesn't matter what hat you wear, it's always raining" just don't wear 100% wool, those things suck in the rain. And yes I've heard about winter- fur / summer- straw but never heard of it as a season
@@brookotastackstore6216 yeah its felt season from labor day to memorial day or easter and straw from memorial day or easter to labor day. Yeah doesn't rain too often here, often enough to where its humid af lol
I agree with felt during the winter but ill wear it if I'm going to a nice dinner all dressed up for a special occasion. Besides that its way too hot and humid in Texas to be wearing it during most the year
Yeah it’s crazy how Texas weather has been, it changes a lot during some seasons, so one day a felt hat could be worn then the next you might want a straw hat
Im Gonna Wear Felt If Im Dressed Nice, Otherwise I Dont Wear It Cuz I Only Have One. But Thats All Seasons Of The Month, California Is Real Chill Weather
@@dominicnunez8378 oh yeah formal events are for felt hats for sure! Its cooling down a tad bit over here so ive been able to wear my felt and not sweat a river haha
Haha you got that right. I used to live right near the gulf of mexico here in Texas so I know what you mean. Just walking outside in summer you feel like you are swimming lol
Great idea man, it has a temperature change that big here in Texas but it is a half day gradual change. Just gotta have layers over here and shead one by one as the day goes on lol
I am a real farmer in Thailand where there’s is no winter here but only summer and rain. The humidity is high. If you wear it for work then straw is only option.
Central California here. I’ve seen both during every season. Mid summer when we have fair I’ve seen people wearing felts. I guess people don’t care around here😂
I wear baseball cap in the winter because it goes well with a hood. when things get warmer I wear broad brim hat. I just feel that straw is not as strong as other materials. why can they make them out polyester. it has great sun protective properties and not hot. it also strong not like straw.
Florida: straw works pretty much all year 'round. My felt and my palm-leaf straw hats are downright hot most of the year. My other straws are much cooler..
Yeah i got a new straw because the bandera straw is not comfortable. I have a 20 year old straw and that aint hard at all lol. Its all about what is most practical and comfortable for you
@@smackdadious I'm originally from Montana. While growing up we had only 1 hat, and we wore it all year round. When I joined the Navy, I traveled all around the world, I finally picked up a straw, the main reason was, at that time, "they were cheap". If it got crushed didn't matter, just got a new one. Now I am also in South FLA, I have 2 hats now, my Stetson felt, and straw. The felt I wear for going out, the straw for everyday. But like everything else, its up to the individual. Thanks for the vid.
Then wear what you got, thats what the cowboys did. If its too hot to wear them, dont wear them if you dont want to. Ball caps are great summer headwear
I mean, you live in texas, so you probably dont deal with that buuuuuut, any idea what to say when people make fun of you for wearing a hat, I mean i dont really care that much but any tips?
I have a question if you don’t mind: how do you dress in the summer and stay comfortable? I usually end up sweating my butt off with my boots and jeans wondering if there were any tips
When im outside i love wearing boots and jeans, feels comfortable to me in the heat of summer, i wear boots jeans, some undershirt which is either a tanktop or a tshirt and a pearlsnap shirt with my cowboy hat. If its really hot i ditch the pearlsnap but not much else changes, im just used to it and not everyone would be comfortable dressing the way I do. Maybe try thin socks or breathable shirt
@@lochlynn1556 it sounds odd but some of the older western style high waisted pants with suspender buttons you can buy are made out of 100% cotton and they always keep my legs cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Probably less of a chore pant depending on how dirty the chores are but if you're just screwing around in town it works wonders, my personal go to is from a company called Frontier Classics.
Hi, can you elaborate regarding the felt hat in the desert? I think you said you would wear it in the heat in the desert. Vegas and rural NV specifically...
The hat makes you sweat which helps to keep your temperature down. When its humid, thats all you will be doing so a straw with some holes help with getting the sun off and let the breeze blow on your head which lowers your temperature. There are exceptions here and there and every situation is different but that is the jist of what i was trying to get at, i could be wrong but that is what i know
@@smackdadious I’m going to a dancehall tonight in austin (maverick) and I wanted to wear my straw hat that I got from a souvenir shop here. Is that illegal?
@@tylernguyen7988 I personally wouldn't wear a straw because it is still winter, but it has been warm enough to justify. I danced plenty of times in the summer with a straw hat, its too damn hot to wear a felt lol Do whatever you want man, the real Texas spirit is taking matters into your own hands lol
@ Smackdadious Either would do. It would all depend on who and how the person is wearing them. Thanks a lot for the video man! We'll be watching for more of your updates. :)
Tennessee here Black felt year round for me Cuase it’s my hat 🧐 I honestly feel naked without it. It’s a little dirty sometimes, and she’s a little bit bent, but it’s my hat I’m looking at videos cuase boss said get a straw for summer, I tried, but my hat 20 years old , I mean …….. that’s my hat I understand that the straw is cooler in summertime but I never over heat, sometimes I get looked at funny but Maybee that’s the tourist or the new people moving to town🧐
Edit….. Even choring I don’t have a straw but all the videos I been watching I’ve been thinking about a straw just so I don’t have to brush off the grass , crop dust etc clean em up
Well Done .Im In AZ and Im the Old Guy in the Hat !!! Still see ppl wearing them .. It good Sign.. Keep damn sun off your hear better than anything.... Oh Yeah I Play Guitar left Hand also !! But yes Straw Summer felt Winter
I got that particular one at the rodeo and had it shaped at Cavender's the brand is rodeo king and you can probably find the same hat in a boot barn, or on the cavenders website
Yeah man i feel yah. Its been a hot one this year especially. Im still wearing my straw hat. I didn't even think about my felt hat because its just been so warm lol. Here in Texas we only have two real seasons and a week of spring. We are lucky if we have a week of fall lol
NO NO Baby stop!!!just wear your hat it don’t matter, I wear my Black felt RESISTOL hat year round why because I like it and I grew up with it my dad and uncles and grandpa all wore there’s also. People make it sound like Hunting season like you have to have a license, also being Native American (Navajo) I wear a Eagle feather Hawk Turkey whatever out of the three. And it wasn’t given to me it is because I like it and my family wears it, also I said resistol hat yes I wear it because it’s one of the three best Resistol Stetson and Bailey. I did not say American hat or Wrangler or Justin I call them the Starter hats for guys who watched 8 seconds one tooooooooo many times and that are in love with JB M guy the bull rider. I like to call them buckle Bunnies got there hats shaped like JB and maybe dress like him come on guys.
Right now I’m wearin my straw hat in korea cause I didn’t think it’d take so long for my felt to get here but no one here knows shit about what I’m wearing
@@VchaosTheoryV yeah, i have seen a few people wear it, i always associated leather hats with Australia to be truthful lol. But I am sure there are plenty of people wearing it now after the game red dead redemption 2 with the main character Arthur morgan wearing a leather hat. If you want to wear a leather hat go ahead, I'm not sure how comfortable and what weather to wear it in but that could be a fun experiment for you to do
@@smackdadious I noticed that too. I'm a truck driver so i found it so far to help much more so than a regular baseball cap. Dropping trailers in the rain and driving against the sun for hours sucks if you don't have the right hat for it
