Growing up in the 1950's, 60's and 70's in West Covina, La Puente, Baldwin Park and El Monte. This is an updated Video. Some Reviews are shared below. Photo credits below. GWCLISER@GMAIL.COM
This is an updated version leaving the last version 12,630 hits!
A Photo montage of places and memories from our early years growing up in the east San Gabriel Valley in the 1950's, 1960's and 1970's.
These photo's come from a variety of sources - including Susie Peregoy, Clifford O'Brien, Jim Harris, Tim Burgess, Marvin Guida, Royann Maxson, J. David Rogers, Gary Cliser, Charles Phoenix, Dean Cheng, Mary Herbert, Jeannie Rivera, Penny Powers Knittel, Shorpy.com, L.A. Times. Yearbooks from La Puente High School's IMAGAGA from the 1960's... music comes from the early to mid-60's.
Mary Ellen Peck said - This brought tears to me, happy childhood memories. All the places that are still so vivid to me. Main street serviced all the wants and needs both for the children we were and the services for the adults. I can see in my minds eye spears, ellison toy store,French American bakery, places I would go in errands with my mom. Such a big world on a small street. Thank you Gary for keeping the memory alive:)
Cynthia Aguilar-Palas said I agree with Mary Ellen Peck! My mom worked at the Bob's Big Boy, Broadway in the WC Paza, Rick spent many afternoons at the Tumble Weed. We walked to the Food Giant with our little red wagon on a regular basis. Oh My Goodness so many, many more memories!!! I absolutely love this!
Rosanna Palas-Jones said Oh My! By the time it finished I had tears in my eyes... So many firsts. First place buying fabric at Grants, First Taco Bell, first date with hubby at Bahooka. When going to Greece went and talked to Chris at Chris J & B Burgers downtown. Bobs, Mc Donalds, In & Out , White Fronts... Goes on and on... Thanks!
Lorraine Ruiz Thank you Gary Cliser. Yesterday was the Anniversary of my mom's passing. Seeing this today and reliving so many memories filled me with joy. Thank you Gary, for this treasure.

OMG !!! How I remember these days. My life summed up in one video. What great times to grow up. Now my husband and I are watching these, giggling and crying all at once. We grew up outside. Never inside home unless you had to eat or come home for dinner. The taste of water from the hose. If it had wheels...it could be a ride. Didn't matter how big a kid you were, you made due. Playing games, hide & seek, kick the can. Thanks for the memories

Lived in Pomona growing up in the '60s. Grandma lived in West Covina in the trailer park next to White Front. Would pass by the snowy roofed North Woods Inn on the way. She would take us to the Eastland shopping center on occasion. Remember the Eastland tower sign lit up with Christmas lights. There were a couple of miniature golf courses she took us to as well.

I have lived many places since I left Puente and I miss it. I'm going to return soon I started there and I want to end there.Life for me will go full circle.Of coarse it has changed but just maybe I'm hoping to get just a miniscule of the magic back.Because I've will always be home there.

My parents had season tickets to the Carousel and my first concert that I attended was the Turtles. Went Ice skating every weekend. We rode our bikes everywhere with not a worry . Times were good, and still are good for the youth. They will one day look back at 2022 as their childhood. Life is great. Keep growing, keep living, keep living life. It ain’t over yet folks, we’re still here. Go outside, roll on the grass, no matter how old you are, do it now, do it tomorrow morning. You will love it. We belong to the grass, as we did as kids. I ate at The Great Wall once in 2007. Had beef chow fun. And it was like an old school San Francisco chop suey vibe. The entire street looks different. After 18 years in LA, 10 of them in Pasadena, it’s probably one of the saddest & most accurate barometers of America’s decline. If you stretch your mind back to the early 80’s (and before) LA was pretty close to a nice place.

Thank you for this video, it makes me smile but also makes me feel very sad. A lot of good memories as I was born 1965 in WC and lived there until 1985. and cherish every moment living there. Times sure have changed and its sad it will never be like that again. I often wonder if children feel the same as we did and I can't imagine they do. Those were special times. I remember riding our bikes through Eastland Mall. The West Covina Ice Arena-demolished back in 1985, the strip mall in the same lot that had The Islander bar, Joes Pizza and Stop & Go-demolished was on Hollenbeck & Garvey. Crawling through that tunnel under the 10 fwy on Hollenbeck to get to the South side, I can still hear the cars rumbling above. Shakeys Pizza, Millers Outpost & that old white house on corner of Azusa & Rowland surrounded by orange trees-all gone. The Capri theatre, skate junction & so much more. Those are things of the past. It kind of makes me feel a bit sick to my stomach almost the feeling of being heart broken, craving those days back but know it will never be again. Sooooo many memories that I can go on & on. Thanks again for this video hope to see more in the future.

@@bills.1390 HI Bill. Yes, there is Queen of the Valley hospital, still around today, so is the old West Covina Hospital which I believe it's called Doctors Offices or something like that. It is right next to the 10fwy, South, off of Orange I believe. The building is still there but not too sure what it is called now. I was hospitalized at QV hosp in 1984 from an accident. Two different places though. You were living in the area almost the same time as I was, 1965-1985. I just looked up the address then went to googleearth. The address is 725 S. Orange St WC. Grew up in SFV in the 60's. Best friend was a Mexican kid named Chris and we became blood brothers. The original settlers in the LA basin were from Spain and we're called the Californios. They have occupied the area for 250 years since the first Missions were being constructed. They brought with them high culture from the old country and many were quite wealthy land owners. I have Spainish ancestry but sadly we don't know anything about that part of our family and only found out through DNA search.

Lived in Lomita and La Mirada in the 60's as a kid. We must have traveled around those areas cuz the names are really familiar to me. Really nostalgic! Thanks!

What's so interesting to see is all the smiles people had back in those days. Nowadays, everyone is on edge and pissed off at something or someone. Just look at random people wherever you are and see their faces, thats if you can even see them if they arent coveted in a mask or facing down staring at their phones.. I grew up in 70's in Los Angeles County, I really miss those days because life was great. I still keep a smile on my face too! Great footage.

Something about the SGV draws me. I want to live there permanently. This was a truly remarkable montage of such a joyful and pure history. Thanks for going Inception on me by implanting me with memories I wish I had.

+NotAboutMe79 Thank you for your kind reply on the video. I was born in 1957, growing up in the 60's and early 70's certainly had it's own challenges. But life as a kid during that time was priceless. Everything was larger, big and safer. People were nicer. It was one of the best times to grow up.

+Gary C I can only imagine, sir! I'm sure the SGV went through so many unforseen changes while you were growing up there, sir. Thanks so much again for sharing such amazingly beautiful and precious moments with us. I feel as though I was, at least a little, able to see what you saw.

+Gary C I too was born in 1957. The tears are flooding and running. How I miss these days. There is a brief shot of the Westminister Memorial cemetary that my parents are now both resting. My heart is breaking. I remember the days we all actually played outside. No cell phones that all these memories are passing bye on the kids today. No video games but kick the can till the lights came on. Bike rides, surfing at Huntington Beach..Drive in's, and an ice cream sunday and burger and fries at Bobs Big Boys at night. Thank you so much for the comforting memories. The ice cream man song on the end really got me. You are right...they were precious times

Wow! Nicely done. Captivating video brings back allot of memories (kinda sad though). Back in the day when we had milk delivered to our doorsteps and the Helm's truck would bring fresh bread! I actually just drove by the old Bahooka rest. bldg. a couple of weeks ago.

I remember those sweet days. It is interesting to me how life has changed. Back then, we didn't seem to have much...yet most people appeared to be happy. Today, everyone has everything and not too many people seem to be happy. A simple life, family, imagination and and hope for tomorrow sow the seeds for happiness. I miss the old days. Life was just better and service was king. Today, you can't even get someone to say "thank you or you're welcome". Now, I buy my groceries at the supermarket and pay 10x's more for them, check out at self service, bag my own groceries and pay for the bags too!

So much shopping; so many big brands I had forgotten.. which came right back to life in my memory. White Front, Harris and Frank, Broadway, May Co. Now we have Walmart…Amazon. I fear Penney’s and Macy are soon to fall. Online is convenient for sure. Try testing out a bed, chair or couch using AI. We still need human contact and tactile experiences. Thanks for the memories. Really enjoyed it.
