Interesting point. Some people say that the Lion King takes place in 1994 due to the Timon and Pumbaa show having items from that time but I agree that the Lion King canonically takes place in prehistoric Tanzania- Kenya Africa in 8,000 BC before the rise of civilization and after the extinction of the dinosaurs.

But we would have seen more prehistoric animals, wich we apparently don't see in the movie. What I guess was this was taken place in Tanzania/kenya(more likely Kenya beacuse of the rock wich clearly resembles pride rock) but Durning the time before european colonists arrived

I like the added touch of the time period being 8,000 B.C., being post-Pleistocene which would see the disappearance of a few animals

I personally think that the Lion King takes place in 1601. No reason to think that, but I like the idea that as Simba took his place as the king of Pride Rock, a playwright in England had a moment of inspiration and thought to himself 'I've just had a good idea...'

To add on to the Aladdin theory, the belief is that it takes place far into the future due to Genie having been in the lamp for 10,000 years yet also being the only one making such references. I don't think it's too far-fetched to say that The Lion King takes place sometime in the modern era in a very human-less part of Africa (though if that's the case then it's weird we never see a single safari Jeep drive by). Zazu sings "It's a Small World", which was released in 1964 for the world's fair attraction of the same name, and later in the film Timon and Pumbaa sing "The Lion Sleeps Tonight", which was first released by The Tokens in 1961. So it probably takes place at some point between the late 60s (when those two songs were most popular) and early 90s (when the film was created)

For me, The Lion King is timeless and could have happened at any time on earth, otherwise Timo and Bumba's animated show breaks this illusion by adding people and real countries to the world of The Lion King. But maybe we can consider that cartoon series as its own universe, because The Lion King 1/2 is contradictory to it.

Even the Lion King 1 1/2 has its own share of contradictions to the original. The entire movie we see Timon and Pumbaa present in scenes where there was absolutely no sign of them originally. It is self-satire at its finest

You're forgetting the DVD extras that have Timone and Pumba's safaris which include a jeep or a jungle cruise type boat

It takes place whenever it makes enough money for Disney. I precisely remember but I was about 5 years old when the principal insistently rolled in the big screen TV, made the entire kindergarten class sit down and I was blasted with NAHHHHH. I can vividly remember that the teachers didn't seem very interested in it, but I was engrossed. I had the Simba Nala kissy plushies, Lion King theme lunch box, I would play act grub eating out in the backyard with orange slices and I can also remember looking at my Mufasa and Simba poster. There's also this lovely little mold toy where Simba is sleeping with his dad lounge down on his back. I love Walt Disney movies but I distinctly remember this was the first "fandom" I belonged to

That's awesome! I think this might have been my first fandom, too (unless you count Barney the Dinosaur). I didn't have the plushies and toys but I had the book and tape set and "I Just Can't Wait to Be King" was my first favorite song.

Can you do when Aladdin takes place, i like the fan theory where it's a post-apocalyptic world in the middle east. Even though the directors say it's "Ancient Baghdad". But i think it does take place in a post-apocalyptic world. Agrabah was invaded by a version of the United States (This is acutally a reference to a poll where Americans were surveyed about invading Agrabah with about 30% of Republicans saying yes)

i did always like that with the lion king how it could take place during any of the time periods the disney films have been in as i like to think it either happened during the time of hercules(that cameo of scar as a skin rug.) or tarzan(both take place in africa with tlk in the savannah & tarzan in the deep jungle that i like to think during the time simba returned to battle scar tarzan defeated clayton/welcomed jane and her father to his ape family.:3)

For some reason, I thought that they were black wildebeest in the original lion king, but in the 2019 version they were blue wildebeest, I can tell because of their heads in their horns

I think it’s really cool how the two legged magazine story calls people watu since to my understanding that translate to the word “people” in Swahili. It’s funny bc I really only know this because I did research for a book I’m writing so when I heard you mention it it just clicked lol.

In one Timon and Pumbaa episode, Banzai even stated that they don't seem to be in Kenya enymore (When he, Shenzi and Ed tried to steal ostrich egg and fell other side of the earth. Altought Timon and Pumbaa tv show is not canon, this still confirms that theory.

I always did think Lion King took place in like late BC times, where humans were starting civilizations from the ground up. I really would like to believe it took place around the same time as Hercules, even though Scar was burned and eaten alive. However, what if a certain god of the underworld brought Scar back to life to kill Hercules, in return for being king forever. I mean Hades did exactly that with Jafar. I think it could be possible

What I think this takes place in 1880s to 1900s, it's impossible this took 8000 b,c since we would have seen more prehistoric animals, wich apparently we don't see. It's more likely it took place Durning european colonization (mostly England) since seeing huge pride of lions tells us they were widespread before English colonists

Personally I think it takes place during the Pliocene epoch because we really don’t see humans and no I do not count the Lion Guard Christmas episode and the Timon & Pumbaa show as canon I mean think about it, we literally don’t see any humans and that could just be that they’re still evolving or if we go with the Pleistocene epoch are probably in Africa it’s just that we don’t see them due to the fact that African Megafauna actually developed a natural fear of humans Which would make sense and to the animals in this would see humans like this humans = death But if it takes place during the Pliocene then humanity would have yet to evolve and its most likely that Australopithecus or early members of the homo genus have just begun to become wide spread But anyways those are my theories on when the lion king historically or prehistorically takes place

Without hominins of any species, despite them coexisting with lions in west Africa since lions evolved, my best guess is alternate history Southern Kenya (based on the geology) in a world without hominins. Timon and Pumba are misplaced, but they don't live in jungles anyway.

As much as I don't want to argue scars head and back side could have been left. Or human hunters could have snatched scars remains before the hyenas tore him to shreds. But they were able to kill him

I know that my opinion do not as so worth than the director's, but for me the reason that there's either no humans or manmade things in the movies (I'm not counting that spinoffs and stuff) is that they're takes place at the heart of the wildless places of Africa. I also think that "The Lion King" is a wildlife documentary that took place in the nineties (including it's sequels). Humans no appear because they were only filming. Some documentaries' crew opt to choose one or more specific (s) animal (s) to be the "protagonist (s)" and follow it's life. Simba was the protagonist of the 1° documentary, Kiara was the protagonist of the 2° and Timon and Pumbaa were both protagonists of the 3°.

Could be prehistoric times. The hyenas look more like cave hyenas. Not to mention the elephant graveyard looked more like a mammoth graveyard.

When you said they look like a cross between a striped and spotted hyena, you reminded me that there actually was a large animal that looked and acted like them both. It was Pachycrocuta aka the giant hyena. That could be what they are. I mean, they did live in the old world. The only problem with that is that in the movie they're smaller than the actual size. That's just my take. Also the elephant graveyard looks so much like a mammoth and mastodon graveyard if you think about it. I mean they're so immense compared to normal elephants.

So I was right lion King does take place in prehistoric times just there’s no prehistoric animals such as deinotherium, the scimitar tooth, cat, Homotherium, megantereon another prehistoric animals and yeah if you look at the landscape, it does look like the Serengeti in Tanzania and Kenya Masai Mara

Personally, I think it takes place many years after a nuclear war. Actually if any Hearts of Iron IV players are in the comment section, last year around this time, me and one of our friends were joking that our head canon is that it is set in the universe of the TNO mod after a nuclear war. I don’t really think this, I just find it funny in a morbid sense.

In sub saharan Africa they never invented the WHEEL it had to be given to them, not to mention the fact that in Sub saharan Africa before the arrival of Europeans and Asians, the largest structures built were made by termites...They never even made a building with two stories...............

Precolonial Sub-Saharan Africa wasn't a land of cave-dwellers like the ones described in the magazine story, though. They had complex civilizations. You're right that they didn't adopt the wheel in precolonial times, but they knew about it. They did actually build multi-story buildings, too. There was a multi-level palace in Ethiopia called Be’al Geubri and that dates back to the 8th century BC!

@@mickeyology5180 Yes and i know about inter-dimensional space ships and a tardis, but that doesn't count as me understanding the science and building either of them, as for this "be'al geubri" it does not even have a wikipedia page, so it did not even garner one even though bigfoot has one. As for "complex" societies that is relative to whom is saying it is, what most people consider complex is university level topics, not languages with less than a thousand verbs of a people who did not invent the wheel.

Right, but the wheel is real technology that they could've adapted, unlike sci fi inventions. Inventing the wheel isn't the best measure of whether a culture is civilized, anyway, because it wasn't useful or necessary everywhere. For example, the Incas didn't use wheeled transports but still had a complex civilization with amazing architecture. If you want to read more about about Be’al Geubri you can find more information at the UNESCO website (whc.unesco.org/en/tentativelists/6477/). Some other fascinating examples of complex precolonial architecture in sub-Saharan Africa include the structures from the kingdom of Aksum in Ethiopia. Ethiopia also has the churches at Lalibela, one of which is the largest church carved from a single stone! Since you brought up languages, ancient Africa had complex languages, too! The Ge'ez script, for example, is a complex written script used in Ethiopia that dates back to about the 4th century.

As for your examples They all have foreign influence....unless you are postulating that a church of Christianity somehow was made without missionaries of the religion....that the natives just had the knowledge beamed into their mind about Christianity without foreign contact...I have no doubt the inca did have a complex society without the wheel, they were not sub saharan african. If you want to broaden the criteria for your debate points, it will only do poorly in your favor. Anyone without a shabbas goyim education can easily speak of other peoples who fail at civilization and innovation ad nauseam for example the tribe of Melanesians who only made one story stick huts and believed planes were "heavenly transports" that foreigners were stealing from their ancestors and made the "cargo cult".

To answer this video’s question, who cares when and where the film takes place? OK, technically, we already know it takes place in Africa, but why should we care when it takes place?
