It's been a bit since someone explained this to me, but as far as I understand it it's a group effort to wear down the ovum's outer layer in order to allow fertilization. I'd have to go look up the current understanding of the process in detail. So in essence the group disappearing right at the end isn't that far off, since for the actual merging of genetic material only one set from a spermatozoa is involved, but knowing biology there's probably cases where somehow more then one sperm gets to this stage. Kinda curious now going to see if that happens.

Back from satiating my curiosity. So it does happen that more than one sperm fertilizes an egg resulting in 69 chromosomes. This is usually fatal in the womb, but on the occasions that the fetus does somehow make it to term they tend to die in a few hours. Just having one specific chromosome can have serious effects, having 23 extra is basically just genetic madness if you're not a plant which just kinda do these kind of shenanigans, resulting in genomes with like 6 copies. Anyway having 3 sets of chromosomes can occur if either sperm or egg has two sets by accident, usually sperm, or if two spermatozoa fertilize the same egg. Fun fact in some fish and sperm multiple fertilization is the norm and they filter out the extra genetic material in some later step. According to what I read it appears that of the three scenarios the one producing most cases is in fact the multiple fertilization event. This is further evidence to indicate that high sperm concentration is bad for fertility as it increases the likelihood of this process leading to miscarriage. The first indications of high sperm concentration correlating with fertility issues was found independently by comparing sperm concentration among men without a history of miscarriages after several successful pregnancies and those from men who had fertility issues and they found that higher contractions were more prevalent in the lower fertility group. In my opinion it makes sense, if higher contractions were to be beneficial they would be closer to the mean as the mean would be drawn there as the generations progress, the mean is the mean because highest fertility hangs around that area, that's how it became the mean. So if substantially above the mean were strictly beneficial it would have already drawn the mean there, so something has to be interfering.
