I often ask my cats to please retrieve this or help me with that…. I won’t be shocked if one day, they hop up and help me wash the dishes or pick some thing from off the floor and throw it away. They already follow quite a few commands and understand all the variations of their name and nicknames .. While I do love and adore the canine set, my cats do not require treats before or after following directions or requests😻👏😻🐈🎓🐈‍⬛🎓😻

So we saw. If the human is two years old or stephenfennell apparently (sorry, couldn't resist) for example I completely agree. It would be difficult. But for the vast majority of people this would be easy to figure out at some point in their childhood. Could you imagine a teenager for example watch someone turn a key and then not realize they could turn it from the other side without seeing it? It's possible they try turning it the wrong way the first time when doing it from the other side, but they would quickly try turning it the right way when that didn't work. It would only take seconds the first time. We don't know the learning process for this cat. It might have taken significantly longer for it to figure it out than would be the case for a human. But when it does it's easy to do every time like it would be for a human.

No, they really aren't, as far as mammals go. What you have described is nothing more than a cat following its instinct to watch potential prey from a high vantage. If you are impressed by the balance, that has nothing to do with intelligence. In fact, it is more of an instinctual ability. Cat intelligence is not at the bottom of mammal species. It is, at best, somewhere in the middle, average area. Most of their cognitive resources are devoted to predatory instincts - now domesticated. The most impressive cognitive ability of cats seems to be their ability to form a mental map of their territory. Many species do this, of course - but certainly not all.

We used to have a cat that would turn the water on to drink but it would never turn it off. We would wake up to the sound of the sink running or come home to it running. We tried to tape it shut but he would tear at it until he got it to turn on. We bought a cat drinking fountain and then he left the faucets alone.

I had a highly intelligent cat. One day, I brought another cat home and she hated that. She went into the bedroom and opened a sliding door that was on the bottom of the bed. She then went into the living room and started a big cat fight with him. He ran into the bedroom and thru the door under the bed. She then took her paw and slid the door shut. She planned the whole thing out.

Personally, I love cats - but I'm happy to be very realistic about what their actual abilities are, and what they aren't. What's the point of pretending that a cat has human-like intelligence when it obviously doesn't. Also, most people have no idea what the range of human IQ is - or that 100 is the human median, with 125 being considered unusually intelligent and 130 "genius."
