The spiral obsession is a reference to a Japanese horror comic called "Uzumaki", it's more disturbing than scary cause the story is literally about people obsessing about anything with a spiral shape. They either enjoy the spiral or fear it but it's more driven into insanity than anything.

Just so you know, The Spiral is one of the most in depth custom scenarios in plague Inc, made by the legend himself Indigo Phoenix. It has many endings and literally changes how the game works, really cool scenario if you have the time.

Legit everything from eyes jutting out and a spiral tongue, to a spiral obsession and spiral art is pulled directly from the manga 'Uzumaki' from the master of body horror himself, Junji Ito. All the pictures in the pop ups are actual manga panels. Every little piece of this an Uzumaki reference and I'm living for it.

Um, Gray, just so you know, Torsional Strabismus is real. It's one of a set of these eye conditions where your visual field is bigger or different than it should normally be and your eye goes anywhere from mild vibration, like mine, or the ability to have your eyes go in various directions that are abnormal. :) That eye bulging issue is what happens to a lot of people very bad thyroid problems.

The entire scenario is an Uzumaki reference. The alerts litterlay use art from the manga and all the symptoms are from it. Even the caniblaism and blood dinking which ould be the whole maternity arc (with the mothers turning into mosquitoes to feed their babies. Never really understood what that part had to do with spirals and the rest of the mange but whatever...). Except maybe the 'mind sharing' thing, that one seems to be the Guren Lagan route.

"Dwarf attacked by Carp" is a reference to Dwarf Fortress, where a bug used to give carp superstrength, and therefore super dwarf murder skills. It would also be a great game for Gray to play, if he gets over the simplistic graphics.

11:15 Guessing that's a nod to an early version of Dwarf Fortress where fish used to gain ludicrous physical abilities from swimming constantly so they would become these super buff alpha predators and drag your dwarves into the water and kill them. Carps were especially notorious because they're fairly common, bigger than your average dorf, and also predators.

If you want to have an idea just HOW far down this rabbit hole goes, PravusGaming did a video on "The Power of the Spiral" (this one) where he tried to do _all_ the main paths? Ohmygod I want Gray's Sims 4 videos back SO FREAKING BAD... :( The worst thing is, he never officially _said_ anywhere that he had decided to drop it forever--so we don't know whether there's a POINT in hoping it'll come back someday, or not. Oh well, at least we have LaurenZSide and FakeGamerGirl... (Lauren did a video where it's "The Sims 4, but I put all their necessities 1,000 feet in the air", and FGG LITERALLY did one of Gray's own scenarios: "Put 100 people in a house with one toilet". Both are about as chaotic as you'd think.)

No, but the actual Plague Inc devs had to make an announcement telling people to stop buying the game _because they thought it would teach them what to do about Covid_ ... I'm serious, I remember seeing that announcement back in like December 2019.
