Does anyone else get hot sweats when you're around latinos and you suddenly forget your spanish? Like you've never learned anything at all, all your words jumble, a bunch of jibberish? I'm Dominican and Jamaican and my father was deported when I was a kid so I never really learned Spanish. I only learned when my mom started sending me to my abuela in Miami. Growing up, everyone around us spoke Spanish but to us would speak English. Don't even think it was a conscious choice, just happened. Anyway, I can fully understand but don't speak (especially after Italian, the Spanish just left). My younger cousins though, can't even understand. Funny how it works.
@JessicaFlores-qd7jq
@JessicaFlores-qd7jq 4 года назад
You probably know it better because your parents spoke it exclusively. You and your sister probably had spanish as your first language before you started school, possibly. However, your younger siblings probably don't know as much because you and your sister probably communicated with the younger ones in english and maybe sometimes in spanish. I believe it comes down to what is the children being exposed to most often and learning, its the same for my sister and younger family members. This is just what I concluded with my own family and it just sounds based on what you said that it can apply to yours as well.

I have the same thing in mine. My mother only spoke Spanish around my sister and I growing up so we naturally picked up the language ( our first language although when we speak it it may not sound like it! Lol) however our brother doesn't know a lick of Spanish at all. He can understand some words and form basic sentences but when we're all engaging in Spanish conversations, he's lost. Lmfao it has to do with the fact that my sister and I were exclusively communicating in Spanish with our parents and relatives but we spoke in English to our brother. Ironically enough, hes taking Italian in school instead of Spanish 😂

It's because here in America, once upon a time when the Hispanic population was smaller parents wanted you to learn English to succeed, but now that it has grown things have switched around, and people want you to know Spanish to be able to communicate with a larger Spanish speaking population in America. Back in the 50's, and 60's-80's there were only two dominant Latino groups: Puerto Ricans and Chicanos. Things have definitely changed.

it's kind of upsetting when parents don't teach their kids Spanish in my opinion
@TheRaquelephant
@TheRaquelephant 7 лет назад
It can be very hard. Some families are scared their kids won't pick up English (kids are like language sponges, but people don't always know that). Other teach their kids, but once they go to school and speak full time in English there, it's easy for them to slip into English at home and after a while, frustrating to speak Spanish. Parents just go with it, because it's hard to constantly force your kid to practice. Plus, some parents value practicing English with their kids so they can improve their English. It's sad when languages are not passed down, but there's many things that can make it difficult.

I grew up speaking both Spanish and English until my parents got divorced so I kind of ..'forgot' the language. luckily, I still had the accent, the basics, and my dad remarried. my step mom was born in Argentina and spoke Spanish as her first language as well, so I was lucky enough to continue speaking it, since it's a super important part of me. The thing I don't understand, why people don't call themselves just "american" instead of "mexican-american"? I don't think there's something wrong about it, I just want to understand why, in Mexico if your family (maybe your grandparents) have a different nationality but all of you have lived in Mexico for a lot of time, then they call themselved just mexicans, not russian-mexicans or spaniard-mexicans or something like that, as in the case of Belinda, Elena Poniatovska(sorry if the spelling is wrong) or even Chavela Vargas. I mean people can explain latter they have a different background but it's not part of the presentation. If an "italian" is presenting himself as a mexican and not as an italian-mexican of course I don't expect him to speak italian, but if he says he is italian or italian-mexican of course I think he speaks italian. My question is why the context in USA is so different? Maybe is that they don't feel that they're completely welcome in USA? I certainly don't know but I'm curious.

well i am peruvian , i mean i born and live and still live in Perú , my mothern language is spanish so.. i can't relate to this vid but i know that a lot of latino parents don't teach their kids our language . Like i have an uncle that is peruvian but their kids doesn't speak spanish and i think that are a lot of cases like that. Especially when is an international couple, they usually taught the kid the language of the country they are living in, and i think is because they don't want their kids to get confused, but in the other hand the kids whos both parents are latinos, and live in other country ,usually learn both languages . I think american latinos don't need to feel disappointed for not knowing spanish, i mean you all born in usa , you are americans after all, your mothern language is english, be proud of that and obviously respect the culture of your parents but in my opinion is not your obligation to learn spanish .

Glad to know that in the United states being latino is something completely different from latinoamerica. Because here, in my latinoamerican country, you wouldnt be latina, you would just be northamerican.
@LucyGOREMariko
@LucyGOREMariko 5 лет назад
@@Ilovedallthepeople that's because you are latina if you live in latinamerica. The people who were born in USA are just Americans.
@Ilovedallthepeople

@@LucyGOREMariko Yes! Thats exactly my point. Although we dont use the word latina, we just call ourselves by our nationality,so I would be chilean. I have never heard a non-northamerican person use the word latino.

Puertoricans pronounce r's as l's so it really doesn't matter as long as you're willing to learn, no one should make fun of you.

Not all Spanish speakers can roll their rs . My younger boy can 't , and if you hear " Las hijas del Sol " who are from Guinea Ecuatorial , and are native Spanish speakers , thay barely roll them . ¿ Have you heard Joan Baez singing in Spanish ? She has an accent and her rrs are mostly not rolled , and she sounds just fine . Janett , a Anglo- Spanish singer from the Seventies couldn 't roll her rr... Spanish being my first language... and still being raised in a Spanish speaking household, when I entered school I juts started speaking English more and didn't speak Spanish anymore even tho my parents told me to. And now my accent is pretty bad, I can't understand it half the time, there's a few words I get confused with. And I'm scared of meeting my boyfriend's family considering his parents don't understand English. So yay for me...

I understand this! For school, work and with my husband (who was born in the UK and is English speaking) and his family I use English primarily. My parents (first generation Cuban immigrants) both passed away a few years ago and my brothers are both in the military so I don't get to speak to them much. My youngest sister lives with me but because she has some special needs and goes to an English speaking school she mostly uses english as well. Sometimes I feel like I'm losing my touch with my mother tongue! I find myself reaching for the right words in Spanish, even though it's my first language. I keep trying to converse with my other relatives as often as I can so I don't completely lose it and I keep trying to teach my daughters so they can speak it as well. So don't feel bad, I don't think your brain ever fully forgets.

This actually relates to me and there have been times where I just wanted to cry for how pathetic I felt for not being able to speak it well. My family either talks too fast and low for me to understand or they speak too loud but to fast. There’s no in between and it makes me worse when they start laughing at me even if it is in a joking tone.
