Bodycam Footage of Man Taunting Police From Jetski
Florida Fish and Wildlife Officers were conducting uniform water patrol at the Lover's Key Boat Ramp on Ft. Myers Beach in a marked patrol vehicle. At approximately 1942 hours, they were engaged in a boater's safety inspection on an unrelated recreational vessel at the boat ramp when a blue and white PWC (personal watercraft) entered the docking area waters at a high speed, generating a significant wake. The operator of the PWC yelled, swerved the craft around, and quickly departed the area. The incident was recorded on the officer's body-worn camera. It's important to note that the waters surrounding the dock, outside the marked channel, are designated as a slow speed zone where vessels are required to reduce speed and remain off plane to minimize wake.
At approximately 1943 hours, while the boating safety inspection continued, the same blue and white PWC was observed along with another orange PWC, both being operated recklessly in the channel. The operators were observed maneuvering their PWCs at high speeds, swerving, performing dangerous maneuvers, and jumping each other's wake. This behavior violated Florida State statute F.S. 327.39(4), which requires personal watercraft to be operated in a reasonable and prudent manner at all times, without endangering life, limb, or property.
After concluding the safety inspection on the unrelated vessel and issuing a verbal warning for safety violations, at approximately 1945 hours, the blue and white PWC returned to the boat ramp area. An officer walked down the dock and issued lawful verbal commands to stop the vessel. Upon seeing the officer, the operator of the orange PWC immediately turned his craft around and sped away. The operator of the blue PWC disregarded commands to slow down and dock the vessel, instead accelerating away from the officer, exhibiting signs of intoxication.
At approximately 1949 hours, both PWCs reentered the dock area. The officer continued to issue loud verbal commands for the operator of the blue PWC to turn off the vessel and dock it. Despite identifying themselves as law enforcement officers, the operator of the blue PWC refused to comply with lawful commands and continued to exhibit signs of intoxication, leading to further reckless behavior and evasive actions.
