This is the problem. We shouldn't try to come up with socially acceptable small talks. We won't like it, the other introvert won't like it, so why even bothering. I usually start asking about stuff I'm interested about or talking about the some weird stuff I'm into. I've bonded with other introverts with this method. I would feel so more comfortable with someone telling me "hey, did you know that hippo's milk is pink? Try to guess why" than "nice weather for this time of the year, isn't it?"

Okay, so as I am apparently the extrovert in this scenario, a few tips: - make a mental list of topics that your extrovert friend mentions. Usually trying to give conversation leads like "blablabla is also into photography" or so - what often works is stuff like... where you're from, what are you doing, what are your hobbies. Answer each answer with either some questions about details or with sharing on your part. It's really not that hard. Just imagine you're interviewing the person. - then when your extrovert friend comes back: "did you know xyz went to New Zealand, too? Cool, eh?" Tada. Small Talk in a nutshell. And USUALLY you find a topic by poking around that you're even interested in. Works 9/10 cases and in the 10th case your friend is back before you die of boredom. Oh and very safe ground is normally "so how did you and [extrovert friend] meet each other?"

My step sister convinced me to go to her homecoming with her but she was the only person I knew at her school and of course she wanted to hang out with her friends too and I was really uncomfortable lol. There was nowhere to hide either it was outside so no bathroom or quiet area to chill so I just stood on the edge eating food

My strategy as an extrovert is to find two introverts at my party and introduce them, chat until we've identified two or three common interests, then leave them and their drinks while I search for other lost introverts or silent rooms.

Honestly, sometimes you just gotta imagine you're the other person you're speaking to. The thing about introverts - or extroverts - is that it's extremely easy to mistake shyness with that. You may very well be an extrovert but you're just really shy, and to add on top of that, you don't have any topics to converse with the other person. I used to say I'm an introvert all the time, but recently I really think I'm just shy. The main problem with shyness is that you worry to much about what others think of you and your actions, ever since high school I've really tried to change some of that, and I've managed to be way more confident to those types of extroverts. The result is i don't get much of an awkward conversation with huge extroverts, but in turn, i could act like that boring guy when I converse with very highly extroverted people. Though i gotta say, quite a number of extroverts enjoy a more calm company, and I've become close friends to a few very extroverted friends. And I'm a guy too, so this sort of thing is quite a bit more difficult. Never could make friends with very extroverted women though, don't know why, i always liked the calmer ones.

I wish an extrovert would adult me again. A male one adopted and dated me in college and it made life a lot easier. Well except for the bar hopping. That was painful. We would go to random bars, sit at the...bar...and he would strike up conversations casually with total strangers while I sit on the other side of him with pressure mounting to talk to the stranger to my right because obviously I can’t just skip a person and talk to the other guy. And in any case, between the two of them there’s barely a breath to get a word in. Not that I would have anything to say 😅 And then the only thing left to do is drink my beer, but uh...I didn’t have much of a tolerance. And you can’t ask for water really without being weird. Okay I’m going to stop now. Maybe I’m enjoying my life of total social isolation by comparison - now I think on it.

It’s so refreshing, right?! I feel like us extroverts are always getting smashed for being “saaa draining” ... I am feeling the love on the one ☺️ I spend the bulk of my time with an introvert (actually, he’s aspie, so extreme introvert haha) and I know he is grateful for my ease in social situations, something I really take for granted! I’ll be honest though, sometimes it’s a stretch, even for us. We are just better at performing and can bounce back from it easier but not gonna lie... it can still take its toll!

That’s a good point! Silence doesn’t have to be awkward. It can be incredibly relaxing. And funny enough: Sharing true silence with someone, can be a very chill and bonding experience as well 👍

Brilliant! I hadn't really thought about it this way, but I definitely get it from my mom. Caretaking very often overrides the introvert aspect. Although, less so now that I'm older. I'm less codependent. Boundaries are an amazing thing.

It really depends on the introvert and how drained you already are. At the top of my game, I can usually keep a conversation going if the extravert needs to leave for a little bit. If I've already reached my people quota for the day (week, month, year), then I have a tendency to escape into my own head and end up staring blanky at nothing until the extrovert returns.

Introverts are not stupid, they can see when you are not interested and it hurts. I stopped talking about my hobbies because I can see most people are just not interested. Most of the time they don't remember anything I've said or don't even respond. It's pointless to talk just to avoid silence, I actually want a real conversation not to bore people.

Like I said it is really rare for me to find myself in a conversation where the other person talk about something I find boring, but when I do if I know the person well I just tell her nicely/with a joke and we change the subject, and if I don't I let him/her talking, not because I selfishly prefer that to silence more by respect, but I won't try to prolong the conversation in this topic. Anyway I am more of an introvert myself so I don't mind silence, when I try to make small talk it is usually because I am afraid than the other person will be bored / think I am weird or something ? So I find it normal to let the other guy talk about what he want. (Sorry for the long text, didn't mean to write a book on it, I will stop writing now lol)

Thanks for the advice! If I am in the other intoverts home I tend to ask about the things in the home. There are almost always some airlooms or travel memories you can ask about. I know a thing or two about interior design so I can ask if a chair is made from a certain designer. Most people like when you compliment their home and ask about the things they own. It makes them feel special and flattered
