Great video! Hate to break it to you, but we're all horse trainers....we are either training our horses to do what we want or what we don't want every single time we work with them. You may not be a professional trainer, but still a trainer, and are doing a pretty good job working with this horse!

One problem you have is that you are CONSTANTLY looking at your horse when you are walking. If you would focus more on watching where you are going, the horse will be more relaxed and feel less pressure.

Good on you, Lisa, you have a lovely bond with Plezant now because you treated him kindly with patience. 👍🏇

If he rears or kicks like you said, he might be in pain or isn't understanding what you're saying. Try looking for signs, but I'm not really in a position to say.

@@foxyreume2054 I actually can't because I had to put him down due to severe neurological issues in his hind end. I now have a new horse who is very foward thinking, but is a senior and not broke to ride. I adopted him and don't have much history except he exhibits many signs of being abused.

I think you are right in taking it slow with him. I do not think he is being lazy, he seems in discomfort, he is a little stiff in the hocks. We all get stiffer with age. My gelding has the same problem and also has trouble picking up his back feet. I give him CBD Suppliment for horses. I have tried so many things, including hock injections and Adaquan MI injections. Plus too many supplements to mention. CBD is the only thing that helped him. I also give him Equicox if he is bad, just not good for long term daily use. He moves so much better when not in pain, as we all do. He is a nice gentle soul.

Your relationship is beautiful! Well done!! I think there is pain in his left hip. Might be fixed by a single chiropractor session. While you walk him stand by his side. Horses like to walk by our side, it could also help just carrying a stick in your left hand and sticking it back like your body is long. When you turn then the stick turns too like you are a horse. Then the horse will walk with you through turns. Even run by your side. Also another trick to avoid the stopping is to do frequent stops yourself, even after two steps. Then stopping becomes less desirable. Sorry if this is sth you already do or have tried. We all have our ways with our horses and usually strangers are not that helpful.

Great video! I have trained many horses in my lifetime and if I may be so bold and I say this with all due respect Pleasant is being very lazy. I know he's aged and older, but he is taking advantage of you by just logging along and stopping when he wants when you are trying to lead him there are techniques to get his get-up-and-go. When you ride him and he stops he should have immediately been reprimanded with a couple light taps with the riding crop. Again horses are Lazy by Nature and you really need to get him moving out better than that and not reward him when he stops when you are trying to ride him. Again great video I just want to let you know what worked for me and when my horse does not want to lead I back her up about 15 feet from the ground and try it again and every time she does not want to lead and stalls out she gets to backup 20 feet she finally figures it out that she needs to get a move on and Lead correctly. When you are lunging him you need to lean forward when he is being that lazy to just barely walk so slow and snap that lunge whip right behind his heels and smooch and get his butt moving . Teach your horse to move his feet again great video.

I love how you take your time with Plezant! Giving him the benefit of the doubt and the time to adjust to his new life with you. I hope you don't mind me saying I see that he might be in pain of oncomfortable, maybe from past issues. He looks a bit stiff and sore in his hindquarters. That might be why he seems to dislike the bit so much (you are very light handed though!) I think you are doing lovely by him.

I dont mind people giving how they would do things. I do mind when people present their way as the only way that works *cough*naturalhorsemanship*cough* There is a place for all techniques but it's never okay to be 1) harmful to the horse 2) unsafe or 3) shoving your ways at everyone

I have a horse like this. Were you ever worried he would have an ‘adverse’ reaction to you asking him to go forward ? I am taking it as slowly as I can but sometimes I worry, especially when on him. How is your horse now ?

Have you ever tried relaxing your right arm? Or when you’re leading a horse, have your arm hanging straight down to the ground like as if you were carrying a duffel bag or bag of groceries(or you could even hook your thumb in the front pocket of your pants so that your arm is more relaxed). I learned this first when working with dogs years ago that by relaxing my arm and giving them a bit more freedom, (or giving the horse his head). If you slide your hand down another foot or two from where you are holding the lead rope it would give him more freedom to move his head) Sounds like you have it figured out already but I thought I’d offer this for other people in the comments section😊

I find I know more what to do with horses who have too much energy; where they just can't walk, keep prancing around, jittery etc. Then I'm good, I know what to work on and how. Yet when it's the other horses we got ie pony/horse mixes, and they just decide they don't feel like cantering or running, and they're hard to get going, I come to a loss and honestly feel like it's more tiring trying to work on an understimulated horse than an overstimulated one. Just got to start from the beginning again but it's hard now that I'm not living at home, they won't get any work on them till I visit home from uni...

I’m no expert by any means so I don’t know if this is a valid observation but it seems like his back legs are a little stiff when he moves. I’m new to your channel so I don’t know the history of this guy but he’s mighty cute!

He probably has some stiffness with arthritis. I believe he is an old, been there, done that horse. Warming him up slowly like she's doing is a great warm up.

So I need some help with my horse... He is a great little boy and has an amazing personality but recently he has been really anxious and VERY spooky (bolting, jumping etc) he is so looky i can barely make him walk around the arena. Now he refuses to walk down 3/4 sides and when i try to get him to, he moves backwards and tries to rear/ turn around to bolt. It’s really annoying because I know he’s not actually scared if the arena, as he’s been ridden in it fine for the past 2 years. Its really getting to me as I want to do so much with him as he has so much potential when jumping but him being so spooky is bringing him down. Is there a way to make him less spooky??

Going thru this with my horse.your horse is in pain. It’s not that he’s old and doesn’t know you. You need a vet to evaluate hocks and back issues. I am going thru this now, and I do have experience with other horses and I am an instructor. It has nothing to do with how you train. Please have him medically evaluated. By the way my horse is also a Dutch warm blood.
