When your WIFE helps you fix your broken car.. (Hood won't open) 

My friends dad died after putting a car that was facing slightly downhill on jackstands. Car rolled off, crushed his chest, end of story. At least put blocks in front of the rear wheels to help prevent it from rolling off the jackstands.

You should start a trade up series ! Get something very cheap that may require some work. This way you get to work on cars and learn a lot (maybe even some collaboration with other youtubers) and also get tons of new interesting content for your channel. Then flip it for a profit (maybe add some $ from the youtube revenue) and get something a bit more expensive. Every couple of months you could get a new car, each one more expensive than the previous, until you manage to get something really good ! Love your videos ! Keep up the good work !

What I do when I have a dead battery and a dud hood latch, is I attach the positive lead of the batt charger to the starter wire from under the car, and connect the negative one to the engine block/ground. Car should be good to go in a couple hours.

It’s a stretched cable, common on old cars. Pop the cable out the plastic switch and grab a pair of vice grips to pull the cable directly. It will pop ever time happened on like every old Honda I had.

There is a spring that pushes down a piece of metal that compresses when you close the hood, once you pull that lever, the spring pops it up. that spring is gone, broke, or no longer sprung.

New battery - then bad alternator. You need to tie something around the cable in the engine compartment, something with a handle of some type that you can leave hanging outside the hood.

my 97 prizm hood does the same thing. pb blaster and worked it every day for a week. fingers crossed, it has been ok for a few months. about to hit 145,000 miles!

When a battery has been left in a discharged state for a long enough period of time, it can be a death sentence for the battery (especially in colder temps). I would recommend getting a battery charger/tender on the battery to try and fully charge it. If the charger/tender can revive the battery charge level and it holds a charge then you should be good, otherwise you may need a new battery (again).

Hi mike, what you need to do is either on the bonnet itself or the front panel there are some rubbers which you can screw, normally unscrew them to make the rubber sit higher so when you pull the catch it will have resistance and open. Let me know how you get on.

Definitely needs a new battery lol also the smoke has a blue tint meaning the piston rings are shot and you’re leaking oil into the cylinder.. just check the engine oil every so often. Just a precaution. Loving the videos, Mike!!

The one I had , had a slight dent in the hood so when pulling the lever you just had to reach forward and yank the hood up... my mom gave it to my cousin at 430,000 miles cuz we got her a new car... and they still have it to this day and it's still cruising... same engine/transmission and everything... but if you want to get rid of it my nephew needs a car for graduation and when he goes to college... lol!!! But always love the hoopties!!!! Theyee the ole reliables... lol

Yeah when the spring is gone you pull the lever but the hood won't pop up, so you let go of the lever and the hood just re-latches. With long arms and driver window rolled down, you can often do this all yourself, by yourself, both pull the lever (right hand) and the hood (left hand) at the same time. I used to do that with my 1985 civic sedan.

The battery needs a good deep overnight charge from a charger. A surface charge from a short drive is only going to last for a few hours. And yeah you need to attach a spring to the latch support or the hood to help push the hood up when pull the release lever.

when jump starting you should put the negative lead on an clean metal part ideally well away from the battery as the battery could explode when a spark ignites the gases created with charging and when you disconnect the leads take off the negative on the metal parts first.

Hey Mike, I think the cable just doesn’t have enough tension, I’ve fixed this issue before with a simple zip tie to add tension by zip tying the cable near the latch to something and then the lever worked like normal, try it out

Hey mike, you gotta take the car for a decently long drive to get the alternator to give the battery a decent charge, also if the car is just going to be sitting on your drive I would recommend starting it every week to keep the cells in the battery active

One of the things that works for me in the hood situation is while my right hand is pulling the lever my left hand hand gives the hood a little pound.

The stretched cable comments should be right on, but in the meantime lubricate the hood latch. If the latch is dry like it looked, it will give you a hard time getting it open.

Go to the auto parts store in the car. Have them test the battery and alternator. But check your wire connections first

Pro Tip: Next time, use the short part of a coat hangar that hangs onto a rack on the hood release inside the car, and use one of the other side to loop around the turn signal stalk to keep tension on the latch. 👍

Put blocks in front and behind the rear tires bud Incase if the car decides to roll. Also the e brake if it works. It was kinda hard to tell in the video but maybe the hood release spring could be broke. You and us (the audience) now know the cable is fine. Check the springs and see if any are broken

The hood release cable (from the lever inside the car) has probably stretched. You can try and shorten it and make it tighter.

ththing you are talking about is called the secondary hood latch it prevents the hood flying up if the main latch fails

You did good. Just spray wd40 a lot on hood release in front of car also on hood attachment and spray cable underneath dash and work back and forth. Check battery terminals to make sure cable clamps are clean and making good contact. Also starter could be dragging and alternator could not be charging battery properly.

I think you miss a pair of rubber Bush on top of radiator support, it should located above the head light. When you had no tension the hood just not pop up

I'm thinking you either have something draining the battery (like a light that's stuck on or a short circuit), or they didn't actually put a "new" battery in the car. I'd also disconnect it and make sure the cable clamps and battery terminals are clean and free of corrosion.

The reason the battery keeps dying might be a wireing issue and the hood not opening that might be because there’s is a whole bunch of rust and corrosion keeping shut when you pull or it might be the wire inside of it might be pinched somehow every time I suggest going to harbor freight buying a grinder and grind all the rust off of it and if you want to maybe get a new hood line for it but I think you should make that a off-road vehicle raise it and put some bigger tires on it just my thinking

Well the best way you can do go to a your local Pull Part Yard find 98-00 Corolla their inventory and pull off a hood latch part replace it that will save you some bucks on it.

Definitely ALWAYS use blocks ! Get a trickle battery charger on that battery , and if you ever replace a battery go for a higher ampage battery It should be able to cope with just about anything you use on the vehicle, ie lights left on !

Tha part of the hood opening mechanism is called the Dohie key. It was invented by Matsume Dohie as part of the first ever car designed in the far east.

What happens if: try to sell it to CarMax and see what they’ll give you

Here's an idea if you dont mind putting a little time and a few bucks into it, just bypass the hoodlatch and install cheap hood pins. That way if the battery dies again you can just pull the pins and problem solved! Hope that helps.

Hey Mike, I think you just need to adjust the latch of your hood and there is something wrong with your wiring thats why your battery keeps on draining.

Alternatively, hold the lever up with a bungee cord (if you can't draft your wife.) --I had the same problem with the gas cover. the spring was weak and didn't open the cover when the latch was released.

@autovlogs, it could be a bad alternator, you can take to auto zone and they can test the voltage.

You may need to recharge the battery and check the voltage output of the alternator, just to make sure it’s charging 🤔😃
