Where (and why!) is D&RGW 346 stamped 406?

This clip was filmed during the "Day in a life as a volunteer" video, and felt like it would sit best as a separate clip. This was a neat conversation with myself, ‪@bryanburtonphotography‬ and roundhouse foreman Dusty.

346 was hauled dead on the RGS. They hit a slick spot in the track and had to set out all the freight cars and haul just the locomotive because the 20 had no sand in her dome... 346 had plenty of nice dry sand. The D&RGW would not let Bob ride along with her on the trip from Durango to Alamosa. Bob took his time building his track and getting the locomotive which REALLY pissed off the Grande. Have you heard the story about when Bob went over and got the RGS pop car?

@rgsrrofnc

@@Hyce777 LOL. When Bob picked up the pop car he went up to the Alamosa depot and asked if there were any trains running that day. The agent said no. After Bob left, the train master (I assume) came down and asked the agent what Bob wanted (he had looked out his window and saw the pop car in the back of the truck.) The agent told the TM what Bob wanted to know. "You idiot!" yelled the Train Master, "Did you see what he had in the back of his truck?" Bob said he went back to the motel and was unloading the pop car and said the traffic on the road sure picked up after that. 🙂

I watched a steam locomotive mechanic use a ring of fire to change a tire on a 42 inch driver, then a week later I watched same crew use liquid nitrogen to do same thing only shrinking the wheel instead it took much longer because the cast iron took longer to heat to room temperature after being frozen.
