Got mad respect for aggressive skating, but can't help noticing how much more of a conversation starter wizard and big wheel skating are. It's like you're massaging everyone's senses. They come up to you, talk "what type of skates are those? Never seen that much smoothness in my life". When I did ludacris jumps, old ladies just threw flower pots at my head. I think I prefer the idea of spreading our sport through big wheels if it gives our skating the reputation of "Y'know what?! I think I'm gonna get me some skates. This guy!" in the minds of people who never skated. Excellent take on this! Your analogies and sense of humour are spot on 😉🤜🏻🤛🏻

It’s been a bit of mixed economy for me when it comes to the public reaction. Had a lot of positive comments and questions but also had encounters with people who were raging but thats due to the nature of aggressive skating. It’s to be expected that people won’t like you damaging public property or private if it’s theirs. People are far more likely to approach someone who is cruising around rather than jumping on stuff. Urban skating, big wheel, freestyle are bigger because they are more accessible. The skills to look and feel good seem more attainable, there is a lot less risk involved which would definitely attract higher participation. Aggressive can look quite stressful unless you’re already a thrill seeker. The best way to grow aggressive would be to join forces with big wheel, urban and funnel people into aggressive

I've been catching up on the old ASA tour vids over lockdown. The 1999 finals with the vert with the gap in it comes to mind with the best trick contest sponsored by Levis who put 10 grand up. People were going off and I'm sure money had something to do with it! That aside, I loved what you said about rollerblading having more of a wider range of styles today from which to build upon. Back in the day we took the lead from the pros who were just skating rails hard all day, but that meant that other less hardcore skating was looked down upon or seen as 'gay'. The broad mindedness and creativity now in blading reflects the wider acceptance of diversity and the feminine in our sport (and society) - which is awesome 👌

Loved the video! I think a lot of it is what you mentioned at first about throwing out the biggest things for these videos and tapes. I hate to say it but aggressive skating has become underground (No life insurance type of underground). Don’t get me wrong, people are still throwing “hammers” but that envelope would be PUSHED to sledge hammers if the scene was as big as boarding.
@rollforever_85
@rollforever_85 2 года назад
Always thought this as well. If we had bigger numbers and more money, we'd have more young bucks dropping insaaane hammers. As an aging demographic we can't expect the pros to keep risking their lives forever, even though many of them still do. The fact I was never a stunt skater myself, I love that so many rollerbladers are more focused on tech or creative tricks on smaller obstacles.

"Whoh have you got on your sandwich?" "Gravel! Because all I do is eat dirt and fall over!" Hahahahaha!! It really is depressing looking at my knee caps which are two different shapes as I cross my legs over and consider just how many hammers I've got left in me as I just started getting pretty seriously back into skating ironically almost exactly 15 years later. That hit me hard, but I already knew it as I've been daydreaming about dropping out of a helicopter and Cork-Skrew 1260'ing over the Great Wall of China with Ancient Egyptian Jewellery on and Vermin Womb playin'. I wonder if there are foods and stretches for building Cartilage back ...or a knee surgery ...bloody weak, badly designed human flesh puppets, we are!! @@TomMoyse Never heard of those chemicals, but had a feeling there must be something, if just stretching properly can help resynthesize the Synovial Fluid inside the knee. Boy, knees are weird, complex mechanisms ..almost look unnatural on humans. Thanks for bringing up things I had never even thought of before, like how there was a kind of false sense of security in still doing hammers like Brian Aragon during a period when there actually wasn't money or big scale fame anymore and the two videos every six months saturation instead of being with the pros every day to see how they don't just do hammers every trick. Thought about that when I was younger. "How do they do it!?" Because when I stood next to Albert Hooi, Richard Johnson and some mad bloke from Spain for the first time in person, they were just doing hammers! Hahahah ..

@Zederzzz

When watching videos in the past I thought most things were first try. Like "in what possible way could you fall on that and be ok to land it afterwards?" And when videos showed bails they were the really bad ones and you wouldn't see the spot on the video afterwards. Now they seem to show the attempts a bit more, but I think they could take it further. In skateboarding there's a whole video genre of "wars", where they go over everything that was involved with a trick, and showing the dozens of attempts. We could learn a bit from that, as it put the hammers into perspective as to what went into them

The style and creativity, im all for it. But it hasnt gotten any better for me. You mention Micah Yeager, people like him were way more creative than these days. Also the boots that are made today are basically just a plastic shell with a single soulplate. Roces STILL making M12.. like seriously? Why not make Khutis again? What ever happened to having a skin, like TRS or VALO? That was style and creativity not what it has become today. If anything rollerblading has gone backwards.
@TomMoyse
@TomMoyse 2 года назад
Thanks for the message. More creative than these days….? It sounds like you’re probably just out of the loop a bit. Watch Dominic Bruce, Colin Martin, Geoff Phillip, Scott Blackmore, Junkyu Park and there is more. Skaters are far more stylish these days as well. There is no need for over engineering rollerblades they just turn out hideous and pro skaters can still perform the most ridiculous tricks in what we have. The m12 is popular for a reason simplicity and it works. Mesmer (a video you should check out) are using a new type of plastic that stronger but also flexible - that’s what companies should be doing, better materials. Skinned skates are just not in right now

Maybe the hammers are hidden in your ego? That said. I agree hammers take time. I don't participate in the community for exactly this poor attitude of a reason. I like fun and exercise and a lil adrenaline makes me feel good inside. It would be cool to consider friends, but who would, when the rolling community, in general, has been un- friendly & unaccepting of me? However, as a innocent child I feel, the rolling community was more egotistically supportive, in the late 90s-00s. I experienced a few egotistical friendships in rollerblading, until the downfall of scandalousation.✌🏻

People still do hammers as my examples proved. People also do far more technical grinds on all levels of rails/ledges/obstacles. People are more creative. Rollerblading now has a far broader base to grow from. Rollerblading no longer has the corporate sponsorship that was paying the pros. It was always the money coming in from outside the sport that was really doing it for the pros. Hammers won’t bring back the sponsors on its own. You need it all. You need more brands doing entry level aggressive kids skates. More aggressive brands doing rec/urban/big wheel and freestyle skates as they have much higher numbers of participation than aggressive ever had. You need that money coming in. To say the new generation is soft is just reductionist. It ignores a plethora of factors.
