As a NYC cab driver I enjoyed the conversation you had with my fellow Chinese cabby, I'm retired now but miss meeting people from around the World. Thanks for your incredible videos on China.
I just want to offer a word of encouragement to you for giving your viewers such authentic close-up scenes of everyday lives of real people. Forever indebted to you.
@Little Chinese Everywhere, can you please tell me what are the titles of the very first piece of music and the very last piece of this video? The two pieces of music are just incredible.
In fact, the vast majority of African countries, South Asian countries and Central and South American countries are poorer and more backward than North Korea, but the media controlled by the West has demonized North Korea too much!😅
You always hear about the North-South Korea border but never the border between China and North Korea. Thanks for sharing, Yan! Hopefully I can explore this part of China soon, I haven’t even been to Beijing yet and I’ve been living in China for 3 years 😅
Hi ! U being in China since 3 years & still not yet to Beijing. Unbelievable !. Hope at least you could manage to speak some local vernacular Mandarin < Pu Tung Fa > understood mostly everywhere. So get out & visit. With so cheap easy travelling speed train & cheap 4 Stars hotels, take a long vacation from your works. Cheers!
@@jean-pierrelanhingkwong7852 I know it’s crazy! I can speak some mandarin but sometimes struggle to understand regional dialects. Hopefully we will head north soon for a trip to Beijing or somewhere else in the north. For now, the weather is getting cooler, I will wait until next summer so it isn’t too cold hahah!
@@ExpatNatt Hi ! When you talk the weather being cold, now in October Autumn, I think you may be an Anglo-Aussie from Australia. The best time to travel in China is between end of August to end of November. it would neither too hot, neither humid nor too cold. Avoid the the ten days, five before & five after the Chinese National Day 1st October. Plenty of people everywhere; all hotels booked; restaurants & food-houses filled up, unless you love mingling & enjoying the crowd. Am an introvert; I hate getting & pushing in big crowd. What the place you are now, probably in the south, in the kwantung province where it is always warm & cool. Cheers
@@jean-pierrelanhingkwong7852 I agree. Summer is usually too hot in China hahah. but unfortunately I do not get annual leave from work so I can only travel during weekends (Beijing is too far to doing go for one night), national holidays, and summer 😭😭 This is why I have mostly only travelled to the areas near Shanghai as we can do these as weekend trips. If anyone has any weekend trip recommendations from Shanghai (one night), let me know!
Thank you so much Yan, and for the history background as well, the more I grow up the more I regret not learning about China earlier.. we are so focused on ourselves here in Europe, that we forget to learn and teach (to my generation, in between millennials and gen-z) so much more about the world and other cultures. I really wish to visit one day some of these beautiful places you're showing us, and even if I won't experience the same interactions with locals as you do, I feel grateful to watch your videos and experience this regardless, as if you're bringing us all on your backpack with you!! Not to mention, I found your channel during a very depressive period last winter, and while secluding myself from the world, I still found great solace in watching your videos every day. It was so refreshing, I felt as if I was escaping away from everything, immersed in these beautiful landscapes and culture. Now watching you again, a year later, in a much happier place, I feel so grateful that your journeys of discoveries are always in motion. Thank you, Yan, you are quite precious - as well as a brilliant videographer and storyteller. Sending you a hug from Amsterdam!
I live on a ranch in Texas, USA. I love watching your videos. They are very well made. When you speak directly to the camera, it is like listening to a friend- a very adventurous and interesting friend. Thank you for these! I’ll keep watching.
@@JamesTenisYan learned English in China. After working as a city planner for a few years she went to Swissland to get a PhD degree. She started her YT channel when she started her LONGEST trip back to China from Swissland. It was during Covid. It took her 6 months and she acrossed multiple countries to finally reach home.
@@JamesTenis ... Just wondered why you would assume her speaking good english would be attributed to her being educated in the US, where english is not taught well, very few speak it well and grammar is almost non existent?
That taxi driver was such a friendly fella! Interesting he compared North Korea to 70/80s China - I've heard a few more senior Chinese folks say similar in the past. Thanks so much as always for sharing!
Exactly, china was no less then this North, Korea during early 1980 and late 70s .. May be china has lot improve as compared now . World is watching china infrastructures with surprise and awe...
@AstuteRealm China does not interfere in the internal affairs of other countries. If Kim Jong Un does not want to develop the economy, China will not interfere with them.
@@AstuteRealm Seems for me that the North Koreans closed the border, not China. I guess, the North Koreans fear an American payed "colour revolution" with incoming "activist" resulting in a civil war. The natural resources of North Korea are to tempting for greedy Wall Street.
My Korean (south!) wife and I went to the DMZ near Incheon and there and there wasn't much to see. You're so close, so fascinating to see it right across the river! Thanks Yan!👍👍
Your videos share more than just amazing images and drone shots. It teaches all of us what it's like in another part of the world through you eyes and we are all thankful for that Yan.. Thank you and be safe my friend 👍
Love the video about the border from a Chinese than an European and American. The POV is so different from most of the videos. Greetings from the Philippines 🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭. By the way i subd Jingwu Show 😊😊😊
This is awesome! A better perspective coming from a Chinese vlogger - being local & speaking same language opens up lots of info. Hope you will delve more into this area & to understand what the DPRK is all about in our time! Also quite heartbreaking to hear people in dire needs over there. Pray for their wellbeing!🙏👍 Thanks again!
You most probably watch and listen to MSM in your country. There are more people in different parts of the world who are in worse situations than in NK.
O taxista falou que o governo dá tudo, até casa. Assim, o dinheiro que eles recebem ficam com eles. No Brasil, isso seria ótimo, porque há muitos sem um teto.
Pray? If you live in the west, your country is to be blamed for putting an economic blockade against North Korea since 1953. That is the main reason for the "dire needs" over there.
Kiwi furit, I rember as a child in the 1960's, Kiwi fruit were called Chinese gooseberry. A lot of people had them growing by their house. The big ones that are sold around the world now were breed and devaloped in New Zealand but at the time they thought Chinese goosberry was a bad name for marketing the new fruit because western country's were very supsicios of anything coming from China so they changed the name to Kiwi fruit.
Kiwi fruit originated in China, and over 2,500 years ago, the Chinese kiwi fruit was recorded in the earliest collection of Chinese poetry, . In 1847, the Royal Horticultural Society of Britain collected many specimens of Chinese kiwi fruit in China. Britain and the United States introduced and cultivated the fruit from China in 1900 and 1904, respectively. In 1904, New Zealand introduced and cultivated Chinese kiwi fruit and developed the Abott, Bruno, and Hayward varieties for commercial production. the fruits was sold all over the world. At present, there are still a large number of wild kiwifruit growing in many mountain forests in China, covering almost the whole of China
But the "ruan zao" in the film is a different kind, they taste better. Even in the wild, the original variety is delicious.(Wild kiwi is not very tasty.)
@@brunetyannick1174 In fact, they prefer cold weather, wild kiwifruit grows throughout the wild forests of China. However, this kiwiberry only lives in northern China.
We just watched a video from an Indonesian vlogger about the DMZ at the South Korean border. And today we watched your vlog. It's really interesting to learn the history from both sides.
I have been to a North Korean restaurant in Changchun. The staff were all from North Korea and they were specially selected for the job. They also don’t talk much and avoid small talk.
Nihao Yan..... Greetings from Texas USA. You are an amazing Ambassador of Travel to the far corners of the earth, China your lovely country. For those of us in great number, that cannot travel and will not in this lifetime go to China, you bring us the wonders that modern technology has to offer. Your drone is a plus, but your understanding and knowledge is far superior, I loved how you explained the division of Korea. I feel sorry for the people on the other side of the river, not knowing our modern world and what it offers. However we have to respect each country and hope one day there will be peace and open borders. Thank you for a wonderful interesting video, be careful stay safe until we meet again my friend.
In fact, the vast majority of African countries, South Asian countries and Central and South American countries are poorer and more backward than North Korea, but the media controlled by the West has demonized North Korea too much!😅
Yan, another high quality, very educational and non-biased video. You are amazing. I visited South Korea DMZ Zone; it was interesting but your video is far more intriguing and shows far more of North Korea. I love how you always manage to get genuine people opinions about matters shown in the video in this case regarding North. It also clearly shows how far China has come in the last 40 plus years.
I AM the WELSHMAN who wrote to you before. I told you I married a Chinese lady and brought her to WALES to live. DANDONG is where my brother in law lives.
More than just a border city, it is also part of China’s first industrial heartland where the first sets of machineries and equipments, railway cars, autos, steel, aluminum, chemicals and other durable goods were manufactured . If there is one interesting legacy imperial Japan has left on a positive note, that would be the industrial base they built during their time - yet Japan’s industrialization drive not just have parallelisms of Western powers did, but also patterned from them too.
Just found your channel and I'm obsessed. Great filming, love the captions on screen and straight to the point. Please keep up the great work, love your videos!
Interesting facts gathered first hand, some almost with an "incognito" approach 😉 Keep healthy and strong, young Yan, and let's see your channel passing 500k mark soon!
This video is so fascinating! My grandma is from Dandong and I've always dreamed of visiting there. I've only been as far north as Wafangdian, and we usually only stay in Beijing when we go back to China. My mum always told me about the river that separated China and Korea when she was growing up. It's surreal seeing that in real life here and how oddly normal life seems on both sides.
Hi Yan, I have visited China for one month and I know I haven't touched the surface on this fascinating country. I have learnt a lot from your informative videos form places I would love to visit. Thank you for the really interesting video from Dandong. It's fascinating being able to see across the river and listening to the stories that the taxi drivers shared. The food looks incredibly delicious especially from Changbai. The rice wrap in a green leaf (is it grape vine leaf) looks terrific and healthy. I noticed Korean pork blood, rice and vegetables sausage which I haven't seen before even here where there are lots of Korean restaurants, but not street food like that. Keep up the great work as you are educating travellers and would be travellers on China. Kind regards, D.
Dandong is the only way to goes to North korea now, and welcome come to China!China's economy is deflating now, so it's much cheaper to buy things. (inflation rate 0.2%)
Loved this documentary. It is authentic, beautiful country. Great history lesson. We all must learn to embrace and respect each other and new cultures. Thank you for taking us with you🎉❤
Yan, I am glad I catch your latest release of another interesting journey. I am seeing increasing rate of member subscription to your channel. Hope to see it reaches 1 million subscribers soon.😊
🥰😍❤ I really enjoy your content. Honest, straight forward. Thank you for speaking English Your content is better described as below. Honest documentary filmmaker. Your work is amazing and I really enjoy and appreciate your efforts. Brave. Fearless. Communication skills off the charts. Thank you so much🤪🤪🤪🤪
Hi Yan I just come across your channel by another RU-vidr and I just loved, especially the fact that you are showing us you land; You are so calm and sweet, I could watch your videos all day and it is what I am going to do on my free time... China is so beautiful, and I wish someday to be able to visit and get to know this beautiful country, but I would like something like you do, out of the tourist spectrum and more towards nature and locals. Loots of love from the UK (Natural from Brasil) 🤗
My parents are from Changchun, Jilin. This summer, we went in a convoy of cars down the highway that runs parallel to the Yalu River and North Korea. You get an amazing view of the NK, both rural and urban. Changbai Shan is beautiful, but it is a tightly controlled experience for all visitors. We finished a nice, chill town called Jian, which is the major train connection between NK and CN. Tons of foreign tourists do this route.
This video is absolutely fascinating! I watched it, paused, and watched it again. Thank you so much for giving us a magnificent glimpse into North Korea
On reflection, this vblog is mirrored like previous yesteryears' documentaries whereby the Westerners are and were still curious about the culture of China. Similarly the rest of the world; including the Mainland Chinese are now exploring into the mystified North Koreans culture but I am fortunate to view this via your camera lenses at first glance from the China's side. Through your camera lenses, it gives me a remote touch of North Korean Culture..
Mainland Chinese have been exploring North Korea the entire time. The border is closed since covid, but before that Mainland tourists were traveling there. "SAO Documentary" channel is a good example. They traveled to North Korea 3x and filmed a lot there.
This video just came up as recommended when I watched some other video, and I'm very glad it did! This is so interesting! I've visited China a few times myself, though I spent my time in China in Suzhou, Jiangsu province with some shorter visits to Shanghai and a few days in Beijing. I wasn't exactly a tourist during my stays, I was with locals, so I got to see and experience things a bit more from the eyes of locals, than a regular tourist would. I don't know much Chinese, but funnily enough during my stays, I could understand about as much Suzhou dialect as Mandarin, something that surprised both me and my hosts 😅 I have to say it's really nice seeing China from the eyes of a local again, most videos on RU-vid are from westerners visiting the country and only really going to typical tourist places and not having the ability to speak much or any with people living in the area.
At 14:43 the signboard on top was saying I like my country the best and the bottom one I can’t really make out certain characters but it’s something along the lines of “Let's establish the entire party and society as the revolutionary ideology of Kim Jong-un”
Hi, thank you for your Videos. They seem very honest and informative. No pretense, no Drama or artificial conflict like do many other stuff on yt. Some day o hope to return to China and see some of rural / non tourist China, but the language barrier scares me a bit
Learn some broken Mandarin, it isn't so hard. Even if you screw up the different tones of words the younger generation can probably still understand you.
Wow that was fascinating! I love your interesting and amazing trips and your knowledge of every place you visit! I’m learning more from you than the history books! Thank you so much for showing us places we will never get to visit. Bravo young lady! You are delightful and entertaining because of your enthusiasm! 👏❤️🌹
This video was absolutely fascinating!!! Thank you so much for taking the time to film, edit, and share it with us! I also loved the cabby's unique accent and enjoyable conversation. 🥰 I'm an American studying Mandarin and always appreciate the chance to listen to native speakers. Thanks again!!
Your knowledge of China and Chinese is just so helpful! I came across your channel a few months ago and these videos are fascinating. These are things I've never seen anywhere else. Thank you so much!
I really amazed by Chinese(both the government and the people) how to make money from tourism "to see North Korea closer". Many people who are curious about North Korea will going to Liaoning and spend money there to see North Korea.👍👍
Before the epidemic, there were official tour groups that could go deep into North Korea, but now everything is closed again, but curiosity has not disappeared
A very interesting place to visit, we went to Chaingbaishan in 2018, and looked down on the lake that straddles the border. The people driving the "vans" that take you up are quite interesting, I was very scared. A beautiful part of China, and I am guessing the fall colors are pretty cool about now also. As always, very nice video, thanks for what you do.
Amazing to view and hear perspectives from China! This is something I’ve never seen before & really appreciate how you interviewed others in the area to gain more opinions and insight. Love it!
China has 14 land neighbors, the most of any country in the world. Over the years of history and economic development, people have often moved back and forth between the two sides. When China was hit by a famine in the 1960s, Chinese people fled to North Korea. When North Korea was hit by a famine in the 1990s, North Koreans fled to China.
It's wild how much has changed. I do recall defectors saying something like how before the 90s it'd be people from North Korea coming into China to do trades and leave gifts (gas stoves, lamps were given as examples) for their relatives, but after the 90s things basically did a 180.
So true. I remember the thousands of mainland Chinese coming to Hong Kong to buy goods with their suitcase. Now hundreds of thousands Hong Kongers go to mainland China every day with their suitcase.😂
and the thing of Chinese land borders is that the closer to get to the border the more gradual it phasing to the neighboring country like with North korea, like with Vietnam.
This was a very unique and cool video. It's interesting to get small glimpses of the Chinese-North Korean border. I hope some day relations improve to where North Korea isn't isolated from the world. It would be cool to see and possibly visit.
Que vídeo incrível e que perspectiva única. Eu ficaria horas na margem do rio observando as pessoas do outro lado! Seu trabalho é fascinante, como sempre!
Exploring the region where China meets North Korea is absolutely mesmerizing! The blend of cultures, the poignant history, and the unique landscapes make this journey incredibly profound. Your insights and experiences shed light on a place few have ventured. Thank you for sharing such an enlightening and eye-opening adventure! 🌏❤
Been waiting for this series of videos and was not disappointed. As always interesting and informative and entertaining, showing us things we never see on MSM herd in the west . It's interesting to see the borders which are so close , you tell us just as you see it and interesting to here the views of the locals as well . As always loved the great drone shots and you always catch the beauty of the countryside. A great video as always looking forward to what you show us next .
I think your content is important for all people around the world. We get to see how similar and different we are at the same time. I think your content can only help all of us understand each other better. This topic is facinating. You also do a really good job of explaining the area or culture. Well done.
Fascinating video. I have seen several video's like this one, but everyone has his/her own take on things and it's always interesting. Have a nice journey around the North of China. Can't wait to see the Yanbian prefecture.
I may not understand why the US and China can not be kind to each other but I want you to know that you have shown me places that I will never know. Thank you for the beautiful experience from a far.
In order to maintain its hegemony, the U.S. government will continue to try to defeat any challenger. The United States has 240 years of history, but only 16 years have passed without war. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that the United States should become a diner, not a food
Hey, Yan! Great video! However, I think it might be better to remove some info around 11:00 to avoid disclosure the identity of those ppl living in Dandong.... Just in case, they might be residing there without a valid residence permit.
They are labour workers sent by North Korea to work on the Chinese side, so they have a special status, and as a price they are required to give a large portion of their income to the government every year, with only a small portion of their income reserved for them to spend with their families in North Korea.
CURIOUSITY V.S. EMPHATY V.S. FEAR .... my heart beats faster as I watch , my mind wonders how life really is beyond those visible seemingly "scripted" facade borders ..... BTW , THANKS for this vlog .
As a Korean American, I sincerely appreciate your interest in North Korea and the video you have shared. May you remain strong and healthy both in body and spirit. God bless you and God bless all North Koreans as well as all Chinese. 作为一名韩裔美国人,我真诚感谢您对朝鲜的关注以及您分享的视频。愿您身心健康,平安无恙。愿上帝保佑您,也保佑所有朝鲜人和所有中国人。
22:02 For your information Kiwi Fruits are from China. in 1904, when New Zealand school principal Isabel Fraser brought some kiwifruit seeds back from her travels.
Thank you Yan for another fascinating episode! I visited Yan Ji city (延吉) this summer. Most shops/restaurants are owned by Korean Chinese. In one restaurant I noticed all waitresses are from North Korea. They are young and very pretty. The interaction with customers were limited to take orders and serve the tables. I heard they are government selected to work in China to earn foreign currency for North Korea. They are not allowed to have casual chat with customers. Locals (Korean Chinese) also told me in the past (till about 10 years ago) their K-12 instruction language is in Korean which limited their opportunities for college because their Mandarin (which is official language in China) is very poor. Often times their only option is Yan Bian University (延边大学) which caters Korean speaking students. Nowadays Chinese government reformed education system in Korean Autonomous Region so they could learn Mandarin in K-12 which opens opportunities for them to enter any Chinese universities. I also learned that Korean Chinese are welcomed in South Korea as the best cheap labor who speak Korean. My taxi driver (a Korean Chinese) told me they get work permits and can go to South Korea visa free. It is very easy for Korean Chinese to get permanent residency in South Korea.
I love your videos. This one is particularly interesting as we in the US have little understanding of China's relationship with North Korea, and no idea what your border is like. I wonder if North Korea has a closer relationship with Russia, as it was originally a client state of the USSR. As you point out, many of the border buildings are empty. Has North Korea depopulated the border for security reasons, whatever they may be? Or are the newer building a sort of Potemkin village?
The ungrateful Kim's family indeed has closer ties with Russia than China. Even though it was Mao who came to DPRK's aid in 1950 in kicking out the UN forces (Mao even lost his own son in the Korean War). Meanwhile the coward Stalin flat out refused to do so because he was so scared of confronting the US directly.
trade isn’t really done due to sanctions which prevent economic development in north korea. i think north korea won’t allow chinese to go there for tourists anymore since they still haven’t vaccinated their population yet
Much better than watching the news. Videos like this are so insightful and help me learn more about a part of the world in the west we don't see. Thank you for all that you do, Yan!
Estuve esperando este vídeo, porque incluso tener una visión más auténtica de china es difícil para los que vivimos del otro lado del mundo. Felicitaciones muy buen vídeo.

Hello! I am a new sub. I love this video! As I do not know much about China or Korea history, I thank you for the bit of history you share. Do you have family in North Korea?
