Part 2 of 2 taking a nostalgic look at Byker. My family were from Shipley Street and are included here. The photos taken in the back lane with the scooters were taken in Shipley street and the girls on the washing baskets were taken in Shipley st launderette.

My dad grew up in old Byker. It must’ve been an amazing place, with all the old style pubs & hotels. The Byker people loved living there. It was ruthless property developers giving backhanders that spelt doom for everyone who lived in that great community. It was illegal what they did. So much of Newcastle’s historic buildings have gone the same way. Today, only around 50 years later, they’d be treasures of the town.

I lived in Corbridge Street in the 50s until I was 7 then we moved to High Heaton. We were poor but very happy. Thanks for the photos. They were happy days.

@@julienorton8322 Just saw your reply from 2 years ago Julie. Sorry for the delay lol. We lived on Stephenson Road in High Heaton and I went to Cragside school. After that I went to Manor Park which was a boys only school then. We left Newcastle in 1968 which was horrible. I live in Coventry but still miss Newcastle . I was shocked when I found out Manor Park school had gone. Thanks for your reply.

a keep looking a 1.56 i used to have a 150 ld lambretta and my mate had a 125 li, and we would visit my sister at byker in 70, 71, does anyone know when the photo was taken we use to call in at dougies bike shop raby street, or brian spencies motorcycle shop tynemouth road ( later he moved to sheilds road next to the apollo )the 150 lambretta was a very rare scooter and i doubt anyone would own one it was 1956 model and most would of been scrapped by then, it cost me 5 pounds, today for a restored £4,500

The photo at 1.56 was taken in 1964. It's the back lane of Shipley St. One of the scooters belonged to my cousin Johnny. Thanks for watching and commenting.

This film is like Part 1 - no voices. We need to hear the old voices, the dialects.
