In this episode I repair a Sony PVM 8041Q CRT. This professional video monitor has multiple issues that need troubleshooting. This CRT has one of the main colors out on the screen. Wee need to figure out if it's an issue on one of the circuit boards or if it's a problem within the tube itself. Can we get it complete fixed? Please join me as I try to save this lovely piece of vintage broadcast hardware.

Interesting video. I have a 14M4U that came to me with no red on the screen, as well. I had to put in a jumper wire on the neck board, which suffered some shipping damage. Works great now.

I've just fixed a 9 inch Sony PVM like that, the PSU didn't work there too and I just had to swap the two "big" secondary capacitors and it started back up from AC. One had started leaking. Relatively easy fix.

I don't know where else to ask this but I have a Sony XBR Trinitron wega 34 inch crt and even after using a degaussing coil there is a Blue streak that I can't get rid of. Do you know what this might be?

Just curious if you may have any insight. I have this exact crt. I initially had color when I powered on after receiving the item from an auction. Next time I tried powering on it was and stayed black and white. Took out the board and reflowed everything. Put the board back in and I get color but it switches back to black and white for about a minute or more and flips back to color and stays that way. Seems to repeat this after long sessions of being off. Any ideas? Did I miss something when reflowing solder?

I am worried that I may have fried my PVM. I have been using a Sony 20M4U PVM for my retro games. Recently I connected it to my PC by using nvidia's drivers with a custom refresh rate. It was set up as a second monitor to use with Retroarch and it worked very well. However something has gone wrong. When I was about to turn my computer off, I turned my main PC monitor off first while my PVM was still on. I think the signal meant for my modern monitor was sent to the CRT. My PVM made a strange sound and turned off. Since then it has not been powering on when I press the power button. I live in Canada. Any suggestions/tips. I would love anything...

Just a heads up on the 8021 tube, it has horizontal and vertical are on separate connectors. It'll have to be swapped over from the 804x series. Not sure if the 8020 is the same but I assume so.
@RetroTechUSA
@RetroTechUSA 3 года назад
Thanks. Yeah, I didn't have that on film but I did wind up using the original yoke from the 8041 because of that reason.

Yeah, I'm working on that one. It's not that easy to find good testers as much anymore and then you have to hand build each adapter. I got my tester and restored it, but I have not made the adapters yet. I bet I'll have that done by March latest.

Nice video! I have a question in terms of pricing. I run a video game repair shop where i sometimes swap in replacement parts from donors and always struggle with pricing. I know PVMs are a little different but how do you go about pricing out a something like a tube and AC Board? Is it based off of the retail price of the donor?
@RetroTechUSA
@RetroTechUSA 3 года назад
Thanks. I'm glad to hear you have a shop that even offers this type of service. Do you have a link for your store and where are you located? Pricing the parts has almost become like pricing rare automobile parts. The price changes a lot based on availability and cost to aquire. Thanks

we used to say in old time NTSC = Never The Same Color , you should have PAL or SECAM , they are better , I used to repair a lot of TV (fat Screen ) for 20 years ago.
@RetroTechUSA

Ha, yeah the color definitely can fluctuate. Especially in composite or svideo. I'd like to try SECAM, I've never run across any equipment to output the signal, at least not yet. Thanks

How about too much color? I have a CRT... seconds after powering on, is overtaken by a sea of blue.. A minute or two after.. I get a sliver of green coming from one side and a sliver of red from the other, but mainly blue w/ some retrace lines.

If we do have tubes with individual guns no longer working, is there a way to short all three colour signals into one of the guns to instead use the tube as monochrome?
@RetroTechUSA
@RetroTechUSA 3 года назад
That's an interesting thought. Some of these PVMs have a black and white only button, so you could easily try it in one of those PVMs with a failed tube.
@michaelsworkshop9031
@michaelsworkshop9031 3 года назад
@@RetroTechUSA I don't think black and white mode would work, since you need the red light (along with the blue and green light) in order to generate white light? I was thinking about whether all three signals could be supplied to say the (still working) green gun to end up with the equivalent of "black and white", but using the green gun alone (so black and green).

You're realy lucky to manage to find that many PVMs, here in France, it's not that easy and there're very pricy... I can't find even a 9" PVM under 200€ (~ $200), and a 14" is more rare and pricy
@RetroTechUSA
@RetroTechUSA 3 года назад
Yeah, it still can be quite sporadic on availability but the good news is the US is so vast in size that there are still quite a few PVMs in the country. Stay persistent and eventually you'll find what you're looking for.

I have a question about overload on my Sony BVM A24. If I deliberately turn the brightness up(even much higher than what you want to view with), the over load light SHOULD come on if its working properly, correct? I mean, I realize that many people have experienced this issue when their brightness is not excessively high, and in some cases they cannot make the overload light turn off. I just wanted to verify that this indicator should come on when you purposely attempt to turn it on.
@RetroTechUSA
@RetroTechUSA 3 года назад
It doesn't always work unfortunately, sometimes tubes would literally "POP" from overloading one day even without a warning flashing and the system turning off. It's best not to test it too much on the 24" and 32" tubes
@ifeetz7612
@ifeetz7612 3 года назад
@@RetroTechUSA Thanks so much Steve! I At first, it turned on by itself one day, but I was able to turn brightness down and make it go away. I just wanted to know that coming on is normal, when brightness is set too high:):):)

Hey Steve. Good job. In my kx-14cp1 there is another problem ... After turning on the monitor itself (the console does not need to be on), such a bright fog appears at the very top of the screen. Whenever a black color appears on the screen, it gradually shows up. I have no idea what the problem is ... You know such a case? greetings
@RetroTechUSA
@RetroTechUSA 3 года назад
Thanks, it could possibly be a flyback issue, but it's hard to tell that for sure. Have you ever opened it and tried adjusting the Potentiometers on the FBT?
