So when Vigo's painting arrived in NY he took advantage of Shandor's existing slime rivers to amplify and channel evil. They stopped gozer but it wasnt until the game that they finally shut down shandor's big machine
The river of slime actually came from “Shandor Island” shandor and his cult had pumped the slime into New York’s decommissioned subway systems, and was to be a power source for Gozer and his Destructor Form. Shandor Island can be found on Ghostbusters: The Video Game, where they found source of the mood slime.
@@ChannelingSpirits I’m watching your video you did an incredible job I’m a huge fan of Ghostbusters you’ve covered the whole detail about the Mandala from the game 😃👻🚫
Such a cool layout! I loved the revelation in the game that Shandor had something to do with the slime, He and Vigo must’ve been in cahoots! Very good idea to map it out I always thought it would’ve been awesome in the montage scene with Flip City, If the Ghostbusters we’re trying to get to location to location attempting to capture a bunch of the spirits while tiring themselves out and unintentionally generating more mood slime rather than in the psychiatric care
Definitely. Gozer's choice of using a Sloar as his Destructor Form for that dimension shows it was a powerful creature. The writers of GB:TVG did a great job taking plot points and ideas and expanding the mythology to interconnect the films and franchise.
According to the novelization, it emptied into a station at the end of the line underneath the museum where it calmly quelled into a pool for Vigo to absorbed the pyschomagnetheric energy. Not to mention all the nooks and crannies of New York City.

This is pretty cool! I always assumed the pink slime in Dana's apartment oozed specifically to get Oscar, not because it just happened to flow under the street the building was on. After all, none of the other residents reported pink slime in their apartments.
It's actually from the video game and is related to it's plot, which of course references the first two movies. The story of the game is essentially GB3.
I think using more of the map might be more beneficial especially at the beginning to those of us who don't know or have never been to New York. Saying stuff like it takes place on the lower west side of the upper eastern northern, south west districts. It's great and all but it's a fair bit confusing.
Man, that was deep. All this time, I assumed Vigo created the slime, but now I find out it was there going back to the before the 1st movie as part of Gozer's cult!
I remember when watching Ghostbusters 2 in the theater. There was an additional scene of the Ghostbusters floating in the river of slime and grabbing a ladder 🪜 that led to the manhole in front of the museum. Then you saw the scene of the Ghostbusters coming out of the manhole
they show those scenes in this video, there's no cut scenes from GB II unless you were one of the lucky few to see a Test Screening, but even then the recent Blu Ray has some deleted scenes and there's no extra River of Slime scenes
Hooly dooly some one put a LOT of thought into this. i have seen all the ghost busters movies several times, i don't know if im not observant enough but wow there's so much detail iv never heard of before, These vids are soo interesting. Thanks for posting.
Im working on taking The Ghost Busters table top and converting it into a "Real Ghostbusters" table top. Its giving me an excuse to do "research" by watching lots of episodes. 😉 👻 💙
Wonderful video! Your Ghostbusters history videos are very impressive. Have you done a video about Vigo and his history? Perhaps Vigo is in fact an ancestor of Ivo Shandor and an earlier Gozer worshipper. This would explain more about how Vigo knows about the river of slime and how his painting came to New York - perhaps Vigo's spirit painting escaped to 17th century American and later escaped Shandor Island!
"everything that you're doing is bad, I want you to know that" I love that line. Just the bluntness n he's not saying anything actually bad, it's just bitchy.
A more sensible route for Libby to take would actually be to have her emerge on the east River Park area, near Houston St. to avoid the rivers strong currents, which would very much slow her down(they're really strong, trust me.), so having her emerge there, you could have her go west on Houston st. To 1st ave., take that up to 41st then cut to the left again to fifth in order to avoid the first ave tunnel, then 5th straight up to the museum, this avoids bridges and tunnels on 2nd ave.. Or you can do Houston to Bowery to Cooper Sq. to 3rd Ave, then to 5th, but either way, the onshore point should be Houston.
Just so you know I think because he was pushing people into we getting hurt as a result of his running that's why they call the Ghostbusters in if he wasn't bothering anyone adjust face and threw them as he ran but he was physically pushing people people being pulled into things and getting hurt and you think she can't be having that kind of thing in New York went ghost is assaulting people even if he's just running
To be fair, later media portrays that most ghosts like to be in the containment unit. It's more comfortable for the vast majority of ghosts to be among each other rather than mingling among the living.
_Too hot to handle, too cold to hold, they're called the Ghostbusters and they're in control_ _Had 'em throwin' a party for a bunch of children, while all the while the slime was under the building_ _So they packed up their group, got a grip, came equipped, grabbed their proton packs on they back and they split_ _Found about Vigo, the master of evil, try to battle my boys? 1:07 Coincidentally, my brother's birthday is 03/25/77. 3:10 Also notice the intentional framing of the Masonic architecture. 3:13 Could be a reference to or representation of the twin pillars Jachin and Boaz, a recurring motif in Masonic architecture based on Solomon's Temple. 3:48 How much Masonic iconography could Dan Aykroyd cram into one scene? We see even more of it once the gate is opened and the floating pyramid is on full display. 6:50 More Masonic/Kabbalic architecture.
You're slapping "Masonic" on Greco/Roman (actually Neoclassical), Gothic, and Egyptian architectural design... The freemasons aren't some boogie man, they were/are basically just an architecture fanboy fraternity that bothers the Catholic Church "based on the allegation that Masonry teaches a naturalistic deistic religion which is in conflict with Church doctrine." Plus you're giving Dan Aykroyd a lot of credit for what is actually the work of a whole team of designers (as well as just the actual existing architecture that is present in NYC).
If you consider the Video Game canon (which there is a debate that it is with Afterlife), yes. Vigo was a Class IV possessor whose spirit had clung to a portrait. When it was taken out of storage, he was able to take advantage of the slime system intended to strengthen/help bring about Gozer.
judging by how they are acting it seems a) they are quite buoyant and floating, and b) the river is quite full (it's basically "complete" at that point) so I guess it's not exactly trying to grab anyone anymore, just shuffles them off to the museum.
I think in this case he's more of a side effect. Becuase Shandor did all this, is why Vigo was able to fulfill his prophecy. Not that Shandor or he had any real connections.
I don't believe Vigo was aware of Shandor. His painting was brought up from the basement and he was able to harness the PKE from the river of slime to elevate himself from a Class IV to a Class VII (see our video "How Do the Ghostbusters Classify Ghosts?")
As a kid, i always joked the slime flowed towards the small town (underground) to its "kin" _The Blob_ from 1988. Great video! The questions that beg to be asked and answered: How did Libby get back to the island? How is it there's no snow anytime in NYC during the film?
Your theory is interesting, but somewhat overcomplicated. There are a few problems. First, the slime, at its level in the beginning of the film, couldn't have reached the sidewalk from the tunnel (subway tunnels are around 100 feet underground). Second, since what probably impelled the carriage was the slime it picked up trying to keep near the flow, there's no way it could've followed the path it did if the slime were confined to the NYPT tunnel. Third, the plumbing that it came through would've had no direct connection with the subway tunnel. Fourth, since you see the river of slime in the background of Vigo's portrait when he acts, you can tell it's origin comes from Vigo himself (the Ivo Shandor theory was probably invented for the video game's plot). A much simpler explanation is this: the River of Slime manifested when Vigo's portrait got brought to America, because Vigo would use his powers to convert the negative emotions of his current location into slime that he could use to gain strength. That slime would collect in any underground tunnel- abandoned subways, sewer lines, maintenance tunnels, what-have-you. The slime would then flow so that it would pool beneath wherever the portrait happened to be. What do you think?
While the original concept probably was something close to what you said, the Video Game deepened it and developed it further beyond simply Vigo being a slime master. Plus the plot of the Video Game was the last contribution of Harold Ramis to Ghostbusters, so I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss it.
@@PjKneisel I miss him, too, but the problem there is, again, Vigo's connection to the slime. Unless he was a Gozer-worshipper, then the slime is most likely an alchemical substance generated from negative emotions. Admittedly, it might not have originated with Vigo himself, but there's no guarantee it originated with Gozer.
I don’t think the line from the game should be weighed too heavily. By that logic, the green slime in the PDS would have had to come from there when the most likely theory is Slimer provided the built-in culture. In short, slime comes in different colors and repeat colors can occur. The Slor wasn’t creating slime that was emotions personified and even then, it was mostly linked to the black slime.
The Sloar was the original source of the Black Slime back in like 1940 or whatever and the Gozerian cultists were basically Slime scientists refining and distilling various kinds of Slime and funneling it through various conduits around the Mandala with the goal of summoning Gozer. It's my feeling that since the island sunk after Shandor's death the once bustling Slime production went dormant until being "awakened" by the influence of the negative emotions of the residents of NYC. This resulted in the Slime becoming more negatively charged and propagating (like how the sample overflows from the container in the court scene) and this increase directly correlated to the increase in spectral activity (even awakening Vigo who was in storage before the intro scene with the baby carriage and leaking slime takes place.) That's why we see Vigo progressively get stronger, first Dana saying she feels like the painting is watching her, then we see him smile, then the head bulges out, until finally he shocks Janoz and appears as a full apparition within the painting (coupled with a background of the river of slime). It's akin to when Peck shuts down the containment grid in GB I and the resulting energy burst gives Gozer enough power to wake Zuul/Dana and call Vinz/Louis to Spook Central. Essentially in the first movie the Ghostbusters are preventing the summoning of Gozer from happening a lot sooner. I think even if Peck hadn't shut down the containment grid they would've needed to drastically upgrade it to handle the uptick (big Twinkie). In the intervening time between GB II and the Video Game the Ghostbusters further refine the (drug like) Positive Slime from the ending of GB II into essentially "neutral slime" aka Green Slime, and eventually with Egon creating the PDS. Later in 1991 (the time period of the video game) with the burst of spectral energy at the beginning of the story setting off the Mandala, the since dormant slime conduits started up again and Shandor Island emerged, thus reactivating the Slime processing on the Island again.
Well maybe shandor being a architect could maybe made smaller tunnels to funnel the slime along the routes you put forth but rather than assume the transit was continued in film assume that because shandor renovated the muesams Dana's original home the library and the Sedgwick which since in the game shandor buildings have gargoyles on them maybe shandor built a terror dog version since that's what zuul and Vince are naturally terror dogs but their hosts are known as the key master and gate keep which makes sense since Dana as the gate keeper blew her apartment up during the ghost takeover which seemed to reveal a set of stairs leading up to the gateway and how Louis tended to be friends with Dana it makes sense that they would be known as such but back to the point of ivo could modify those buildings but questions on the way the modifications worked only surfacing when the guys looked at the blueprints and had time to think it over in jail so if he could get away with it and no questions came about until the events of ghostbusters 1 and the video game it is safe to say Ivo put up the act that he was a professional architect and not a maniac wanting to end the world people believed it and he was able to renovate those buildings so it's not out of the question he could've built tunnels under ground to run his slime along the route you mentioned to fuel his master plan and very well passed it off as a sewer system or something like that
Has anyone ever thought about the fact that this river of slime could have been slowly filling up back in the time of the first movie? If it's growing on negative energy, then there's a good chance that the river of slime WAS slowly growing during the events of the first movie. 🤔🤔🤔
It very much was, as Shandor Island has been producing that muck since around world war 2 iirc. Its only around the timw of ghostbusters 2, plus a little push from Vigo, that led to it achieving critical mass and overflowing into the city.
Hey guys, love your channel and the original Ghostbusters movies. Question, is that the same place in teenage mutant ninja turtles 2? Hey, that also dealt with ooze.. 🤯
It is not the same place. The river of slime station was filmed on a soundstage and historically ran beneath Broadway from Warren to Murray Street. The TMNT's new lair was a set built in North Carolina based on the closed NY City Hall Station. However, the historic Pneumatic Transit and City Hall Station are both blocks away in real NYC.
@@ChannelingSpirits The City Hall Station was an inspiration for the River of Slime location as well, but is name dropped as the Pneumatic Transit system to ground it in one concept.
I would say the tunnel that connects Manhattan and Queens could easily travel south and connect to Brooklyn/Coney Island. As there isn't much material on what happened with the other boroughs, its hard to give a more exact route.
@@leonardmosca6852 I understood the Vigo revival thing as being a freak coincident that only happened by accident. Like, of course Vigo is going to act like it is fully intentional and "all according to his plans"... but guy just lucked out completely by having a painting with an imprint of him at the "right place/right time" I mean--since he wasn't the one who caused the slime, but is the sort to take credit for work he didn't ever do--it works with his character.
@@NimhLabs Yea I agree, the slime was allowing all of these things to occur, and Vigo happened to be one of the most powerful entities in the city that go a boost from the slime and focused energy, so in lieu of Gozer being repelled he basically took command of the slime as the most powerful Ghost or Ghost-like entity in the city at the time, also the most evil.
@@ChannelingSpirits I can wait. I've been watching majority of your videos. And I must say that the work you've done in explaining how the equipment works is very well thought out and explained.
wait wait wait wait wait....the movies are obviously canon, and the video game is apparently canon....so you're saying that two canon materials contradicted each other? :\
It will depend if Ghostbusters: Afterlife keeps Ghostbusters: The Video Game canon. But yeah, the video game has the slime being created as a preparation for Gozer. Vigo simply found a way to tap into it.
@@MulToyVerse pretty sure Gozer would win, overwhelmingly. Vigo was a tyrant and warlord with *some* occult knowledge, whereas Gozer was a literal demigod.
