I admire your spirit my friends!!... for whatever reason this video popped up on my feed and because it was relatively short I was open to watching it and I'm glad I did.... the main mistake is that you should've let those go way longer!... sweet potatoes will just keep growing and growing even though they say 110 days to harvest thats just for us up north that need to see if we can even grow them or not... in Florida you can basically just let them grow and everyone of those long skinny ones you had would've filled out to be huge... also make some naturally fermented fertilizers and apply those a few times a month and that will dramatically improve your game... I've made several fertilizer videos on my channel that you may find useful.... keep it up my friends and your next harvest will be fantastic!!!

Thank you for the detailed comment. I was afraid I pulled them too soon. I have been making FPJ and will be sure to check out your channel for other fertilizer videos. I appreciate it.

Y'all are cute! Love your spunk...makes a good gardener. 👍I agree with the advice others gave y'all...it's hard to wait the full time your first year...next year you'll plant your slips and have more patience.🙂 You might try growing them in a container or raised bed...the soil is looser...perfect for them to take off. I grow mine in containers...totes of all things...and it works well. 👩🏾‍🌾 You might try adding potash to your mix...they love it. I make mine (to add to planting mix) with our fires over winter. Continued happy gardening!👍

I live in Georgia zone 8b. I have never heard nor seen ppl harvest sweet potatoes in the month of August. Yet, you guys are the second YT channel that I witnessed doing this and getting poor results. Usually the rule of thumb in the south is plant sweet potatoes in May and if there is absolutely no threat of frost, leave the sweet potatoes alone! Most sweet potato harvest are at the end of September or mid to late October when the temps have cooled down....that is including Florida. P.S. Keep it simple. Sweet potatoes are easy to grow bc they don't require a lot of fertilizer; in most cases just adding a little cow manure to the soil is all you need. The only secret is mostly to just leave the sweet potatoes in the ground for ab(traditionally)150 to 170 days...if you want the best harvest that you can possibly get. 😉

Yes, let them grow longer. It's really hard to wait but wait until you are close to your frost date. I'm 6b and I'm dying to harvest mine but I wait as long as possible... late Sept to early October. Also sweet potatoes are pretty drought tolerant and don't generally need much watering. You can also add fertilizer throughout the growing time.. I generally do once a month but some ppl do more often, phosphate and potassium is more important than nitrogen when it comes to sweet potatoes. Sweet potatoes will continue to grow until killed off either by frost, disease, pests or us pulling them so the longer they stay in ground the better

Thanks Old Bear, I appreciate you taking the time to leave a comment. Looks like next year they're going to be in the ground A LOT longer than I did this time. 🤦‍♂️

@@theerbstead6205 I LOVE talking garden so if ever asked I'm happy to blather on 😁 Gardening is a roller-coaster journey nearly every year I suppose that's what keeps us all coming back to the garden season after season, best of luck to you both 💜

I know how resourceful you two are and thought maybe you had just created a sweet potato fries variety of plant. But, based on the comments below, and my own experience, time, spacing, and soil conditions are three critical elements. Sounds like your soil was right. Not sure what spacing you used, so that may be a factor also. And then time is the next factor. Another tip I learned was to stagger planting times. If you split your bed into 2-3 sections and plant every couple weeks, you can harvest them without overwhelming yourself. I think there is a special process to preserve sweet potatoes, so I plan to grow what I'll eat without having to preserve. Great video.

I sure don't claim to be a expert but maybe some bone meal along with the 4 4 4 fertilizer also I changed my method of applying the fertilizer. Instead of sprinkling across the whole bed and mixing in I put about a quarter cup of each in the whole right under the slip. I hope this helps. Keep on growing😊
