Where do tomato products really come from? Undercover investigation (Marketplace)

You may think you know where your tomato products come from based on the packaging, but we found tomato products from major brands linked to China’s Xinjiang region, where Uyghur Muslims face mass detention, surveillance and torture. They might be on store shelves here.
CLARIFICATION: An earlier version of this video said La Doria will continue to use tomato paste from Xinjiang, China, through November 2021. After the episode aired, the company clarified it has not ordered tomatoes from this year's harvest and said it made that decision prior to CBC's inquiries. Any tomato paste from Xinjiang was harvested in 2020. The information is referenced from minute 12:56 to 13:06.

I know where my tomato products come from bc I bought 250lbs of Roma tomatoes and 100lbs of field tomatoes from a local farmer and processed everything myself....tomato soup, tomato juice, spaghetti sauce, pizza sauce, ketchup, salsa, BBQ sauce, spicy tomato chutney , stewed tomatoes and tomato powder.....I have enough in my cold room to last a year.

@@gregbrunner599 No we eat with the season and buy from local farmers as much as possible. We don't eat salad in the winter......but there is coleslaw,sauerkraut ,lots of pickles and relish( homemade of course)

Label laws really needs to be updated, another issue is with online shopping, the groceries doesn't put all the label info and in some cases no info at all but partial pictures of the label.

Convenience has been pushed to make people do on-line shopping, a lot of shopping is done over the internet, convinced many people this is better. I have not and will not shop this way

Wish this was done for all our food! As soon as a product is considered value added as far as I know... repackaged, frozen at sea or cooked... it becomes product of that Country... its dishonest... safety from pesticides, heavy metals etc... we cant make healthy decisions based on false product origins. Product ingredient sources of origin should be the norm and mandatory these days. Countries with shady dealings with safety at any level for workers, products and consumers should be banned into Canada. Lets grow our own... we have the land...lets use it and respect our farmers. Less is more approach. Quality over quantity. Superior over inferior products. Less food waste. Health is wealth.

No offence CBC, but how did you guys translated that Chinese document? The Chinese documents you guys used said nothing about force labour, its a document of a report talking about the Chinese poverty alleviation program and how their government finding job opportunities for minority ethnic groups. The document talked about the importance of poverty alleviation for minority ethnic groups and also talk about how food court of the workplace adding new food dishes which is consistent with their religious beliefs.

Agreed. I remember when this show started in 1972, back when Stompin' Tom Connors sang the theme song, and they have consistently worked to bring awareness of bad corporate behavior and warn consumers of the many defective products and contractor scams that we deal with on a daily basis. Their reporting has helped steer my decision making many, many times over my lifetime. ✌🇨🇦

So the risk of something we consume being made with forced labour... which products might be exported to Canada that are made with American prison labour? The estimated 30,000 convicts leased to farms in Arizona, Idaho, Washington and so on. As an article in The Atlantic stated... "Incarcerated workers, laboring within in-house operations or through convict-leasing partnerships with for-profit businesses, have been involved with mining, agriculture, and all manner of manufacturing from making military weapons to sewing garments for Victoria’s Secret."

This is a great story that really needs to be heard by everyone, the ag industry has many dark areas that we as consumers never recognize until journalists dig into the root of the issue. As a consumer it costs more to by local but it also does not contribute to corporate greed and exploitation of workers, for me it started with the ethically sourced coffee which made me think about all the products in our food supply we enjoy. This has created an awareness to also support local, and I thank god for farmers and farmers markets everywhere in in every province in Canada. Buying local isn’t cheap but the quality of the products are very good and as a consumer you are not part of the problem of unethical treatment of others. Agriculture isn’t easy work and there are few family farms left , so support local and be kind to people because it matters more than you think.

The best tomatoes grew in my backyard this year. My two year old did an amazing job. So sweet tasting! And all it did was make me violently hate supermarket tomatoes. They are terrible and insanely overpriced.

It's actually cheaper if you can get straight to the farms to buy them The farmers market sometimes are a rip off. Sometimes the seller will buy from wholesaler and pretend it's organic

I learned that if you only translate (pick out) 2, 3 words out of any documents you can say any story you want. My teacher in Canada call that " taken out of context". I dare anyone screen shots the Chinese documents in this video and use Google translate and read the complete sentence. You will find it very interestingly different to what market place claims.

If you are doing an interview, there is normally a preinterview that happens off camera where the questions in the interview are run by the participant. It is likely that bedbugs/rats came up in the preinterview, so if it seems like the participant is being led in that question, now you know why

GREAT investigation, WRONG conclusion. At 21:20, the responsibility is put on the Supermarkets. The responsibility needs to be on the GOVERNMENT to create legislation that ensures ethical responsibility up and down the supply chain. Corporations will only ever prioritize the bottom line, and respond in a minimal reactionary way, if at all, as this investigative journalism demonstrates. If we allow ourselves to think that responsibility begins and ends with the "consumer's choice", then only a small percentage of people will opt to purchase a new product. The real strategy for change in a representational democracy is for people to respond to these issues with ACTIVISM and put hard pressure on elected officials to enact change through LEGISLATION, so that ethical products can end up on the shelves across the board.

We have often complained that tomatoes just don’t taste as good as our younger years. We grow our own tomatoes which we enjoy fresh and canned but have to supplement at some point. I assumed (wrongly) that Mexican tomatoes would be ethically produced. However, if we boycott those fresh tomatoes, are we not going to harm the workers further if they don’t have a paycheck from those farms.

Forget 'moral compass.' Supermarkets work on such slim margins that they are extremely sensitive to consumer backlash. If enough shoppers make it clear they want ethical products supermarkets will respond.

First shoppers have to know that this is going on. 99.9% of the average shopper knows nothing about the orgin of the products they purchase. Absolutely nothing. And the percentage of shoppers who even _care_ about that particular info, well that's another frightening number to be determined.

But remember when Heinz pulled out of Leamington? There was a backlash and French's came out with its own line of ketchup with tomatoes grown in Leamington. Heinz was so mad it came out with its own line of mustard! To this day, my ketchup is French's!

Shoppers are looking to buy products at the best price possible. We should be able to buy those at the best price if we chose to. If you have the money to pay twice as much for every single items at the grocery to make sure there was no forced labor good condition bio ethical etc go for it. Meanwhile grocery store don't pay our rents , our foods , electricity our bills in general. So I won't pay twice as much for my coffee , tomato or any other product . It's hypocritical to ask for us to pay more for ethical reason a lot of us don't have the means to.

I think it's needlessly theatrical and confrontational to confront company reps about this or other issues. These aren't independently owned companies where one person, the owner, can answer for their singular actions or make decisions about the future. Anything like this is going to have to go through a board/committee of multiple people before action is taken or a response can be released. I have little doubt that the woman on the phone wasn't empowered to make a decision or at liberty to discuss confidential company info, nor that anyONE else at the company would have been either.

If you live in the city in a flat situated in a high rise apartment complex or generally living in the city, makes it difficult to grow your own produces, organically. Because, you'd need the direct sun's exposure throughout the day, you'd need lots of space (unless you are happy with a handful of tomatoes every 4 months.

Most veggie and plants are way easier and not very fussy. Like you just need to fertilize once a week. And water every few days. It’s not as extreme as u think. Don’t think you’re too busy or anything. If you really want to you could.

I love when they say they concealed their faces for their safety then showing their bodies, unaltered voices, their names and just blurring their faces a bit. I would definitely not feel safe ever speaking up if i was in a similar predicament if those were the precautions taken.(that lady that ran away might have done the right thing for her safety) How hard would it be to find a worker that have this name and body type and voice if i was adamant on tracking them down if i know how they sound, general look, name and how their house look like it would be easier.

What about the tomato growers in Leamington, ON and area? Most are Mexican temp workers and their living and working conditions are as bad as they are in Mexico. Quite telling that Marketplace did not report on these workers.

I understand that people want to know where the product we eat came from. But consumer nowadays some don't care as long as the taste is according to their like and of course products is beyond their budget. If a minimum wagers buys the bio that came from their own land for sure it costs 2 or 3 times higher than in supermarket. Sustainability or bio products cost much and that's the reason why the masses still buy products in supermarkets.

If you live in Ontario always look for that Foodland Ontario sticker!! Never buy produce from anywhere but Ontario. With the exception of Oranges from Florida and PEI potato’s!!!

This is a reason I switched from Heinz to French's ketchup. Canadian tomatoes used. I always read labels and 'product of...' I would never want to buy tomatoes from exploited people.

I certainly don't. You can see this as uneffical, but it's not my department or responsibility to figure out how these things are produced. As long as I receive the correct product, I take no issue with how it came to be. If suppliers and buyers do it and can sleep on it, then I have nothing to concern myself with. My primary canned tomato product brand is Red Gold, and for better or worse, those tomatoes come solely out of Indiana🙄.

This is sad. I feel like every product use, wear, eat, it's almost impossible to avoid some percentage of slave labor. Even the devices we're watching this on are likely produced from raw materials that've been mined in some 3rd world country by children. What's the solution?

I always look at where the vegetables come from but not always shown or trust if the label are correct. Winter months seem to be when we are forced to buy from Mexico, Africa, out side of North America.
