The shocker for me is when I was told Goodwill sells online. I looked, and they had used designer purses for $300.00, watches and more extremely high priced. Things donated are for people that want something sightly used at a nice price . Goodwill is selling used donated things online for high prices.

I worked at a Goodwill and certain employees would hide items til their co-horts would come into the store,then they would mark the lowest price possible. The buyer then would take them to a flea market and sell them for top dollar and they split the profits. Management knew of this and did NOTHING.

Honestly I don’t think I mind this as much as shit just going to the trash. If thinks are being sold for profit at least it’s not going to a landfill. Of course it would be better if my nice donated clothes would go to people who actually need them instead of people just making a quick profit. But again it’s better than going into a landfill.

Goodwill uses their profits to donate to verified charities by the government. In other to be a non profit organization the government audits you. If they arent doing their intended purpose by a certain reasonable expectionation they have to repay that money as taxed goods. Again that's what I know from tax books nolo.

You have the homeless , you have women's shelters and you have people and animals starving to death in our very won country Andre are suppose to be the richest country in the world ? I think not. How many people are going without health care and heat and dying of heat exaction ? Its terrible. They don't even help the elderly that were the heart of this country for how many decades ? What about them ? Its sad , disgusting and embarrassing all at the same time.

In 2015, I was required to move. Being I could only find a much smaller apt., I needed to downsize. While I was sorting and packing, I had boxes or large bags whereby I put items to give away to the Goodwill since it was not that far down the road from me. I dropped off lots of different items on different days. Other years, I also dropped off items. On one of the days near moving time, when I had dropped off items, a large truck was at the side and there was an opening on the side of the Goodwill building. Employees were throwing item after item in the truck. Things with glass such as pictures with frames-- smash, smash, smash! Throwing all kinds of things away. I had given so many things to the GW over time in good or excellent condition or even some new items, never used. It broke my heart to see what they were doing with many items. I left being so upset and wondered if my good items were also thrown away--when someone would have been happy to have them if donated somewhere else. What a horrible waste!!! And for other people who donate nice things, they probably didn't know that many items are thrown away. They'd be sick to know that. Sometime after moving, I called an Urban Mission in a town next to me and asked if they throw away decorations and other things that people donate. They said they do not. I have shopped at the GW for some things. They are "over priced" for being items that are donated to them. I can get brand new clothes, for instance, for the same price or a few dollars more at Gabes or when price reduced at Walmart, like end of season markdowns. To me, it's disrespectful 😪 of the GW to throw away all kinds of items that people donate thinking they can be useful to others. If people wanted their items thrown away, they could have done that themselves as most people have garbage pick up every week. I hope GW changes their policies and finds some useful way to donate the good items they don't want somewhere else.

there's another side to the story. For three years I managed three thrift stores in Reno Nevada. They were not Goodwill's but we're associated with a nonprofit organization. The number one item that was donated with stuffed animals. We got thousands and thousands of them and they ranged from ones that has obviously been pulled away from the family dog and those that were brand new. We couldn't give them away we had so many of them and remember it isn't like we had unlimited space. Other items ranged from complete garbage that people just couldn't figure out how to get rid of so they donated two incredibly expensive items that were given to us when people passed away. I personally do not support Goodwill since I found out that they are not a nonprofit organization and they do nothing to help people get jobs. But like I said on the flipside people do dump things on them and they have to get rid of them.

Just some things to think about folks... I volunteered in a Goodwill for 2 years, so I know what really goes on behind the curtain. People donate items that are soiled with feces, urine, animal waste, vomit, dirty diapers in the bags with clothes... I'm not kidding. The problem is, all these donations get put in the same place so what appears to be a nice "tutu", might have actually been exposed to urine or something else in the donation box. Goodwill is not a laundry service... if it's soiled, it gets thrown out. If it's broken, stinks, torn, dangerous, etc... it gets thrown out. Now that's just the "unuseable" items. There are also times when SO MANY clothes come in, they just can't sell them fast enough, so what isn't "spoiled out" gets put into a bundling machine that crushes it down into actual BALES of clothes that is then sold for salvage. Yes, sometimes there are "nice" items in there. It happens. So before you go all freak-out on Goodwill, just keep these things in mind.
@meganl458
@meganl458 2 года назад
People don't realize the quantity of clothes that are donated every day. It's an amount that could never possibly be sold. Most of them are junk too because clothes now are only meant to last a season then people dump them. So they get sent to developing countries to deal with instead. I don't like Goodwill as an organization either, but this problem is bigger and is with the clothing industry as a whole, not just them.

The Good Will and the Red Cross are businesses!! They are about turning a profit. If the an item is not suitable for sell and goes in bulk which then is sold to Handlers who then sell it to other Handlers Overseas. I saw a Program in Germany where Someone in Munich donated a soccer T-shirt and it went through sorting and was sold as bulk goods. They in turn where sold to a Handler who sold them to another one in Africa. Once in Africa the Merchants in the Market bought parts or a whole bulk, paying so much for a pound of fabric. Eventually this t-shirt was sold for 3 bucks at the Market. If the items are deemed inappropriate, then they are shredded and sold as rags. I don’t donate anymore. I just leave a bag full of items next to the bins or leave them in a heavily traveled area. That way someone who may not have any chips, can still have something nice, without paying. I don’t believe in the Theory that if You pay for it, You’ll appreciate it. I believe that if You find or are given something nice, and You have very little, You’ll appreciate it MORE!! With the decaying situation with folks losing their jobs, and housing, every little bit helps. I get upset when I see people donate JUNK and are insulted when asked why they would think that Someone would want to wear or have that piece of Crap. I can see donating something that doesn’t fit, but if it’s faded or torn, cut it up and use it as a cleaning rag. They say, “Beggars can’t be choosers” but these folks aren’t Begging!! All most are looking for are something nice to make their dreary World a little better. All of US have stuff We haven’t wore in years, taking up space in the closet. I became aware of how many of US are HOARDERS!! After my Mom Passed, We had to get rid of her STUFF. I then became aware of the FACT that, although these might have been her FAVORITE pair of shoes, sweaters or jackets, it didn’t mean the same to Me. So letting it go to a new home wasn’t an issue. The same with my Worldly possessions. My Son doesn’t want my Oldhead stuff. Well maybe some of it, but You get My point. I personally have started MINIMIZING my possession. I don’t want to leave this BURDEN on My Loved Ones, because of My Hobby of collecting STUFF. If I’ve gone a whole year without once wearing an item it will be in Someone else’s closet next year. How many pairs of shoes, pants, shirts, or jackets do You actually NEED? Think about it.

I work at Goodwill right now and I did so a couple years ago too (it’s a pretty good paying summer job) and seeing the video and the comments on this video make me want to clear up some misconceptions. I’ve worked in almost every part of the store and seen the whole process up close. The video is pretty biased in trying to generalize a couple pictures and using a disgruntled employee to characterize the entire organization which is just ridiculous. Here are some common misconceptions that often float around: 1. Goodwill is not a unified organization. Goodwills each run on independent districts that have their own policies, pricing structures, and charity events. Here in CT, there are 2 major branches: -GW of Western and Northern CT covers pretty much the whole state except for the southeastern part. -GW of Southern New England covers the remainder. That being said, the experience you have in goodwills outside of CT apply very little to ones in here. The basic premise of how it works still applies but the very fundamentals of what we do are entirely different to any other districts. 2. About the trash issue mentioned in the video, many customers and donors do not realize that most of the stuff that is donated is simply unusable or hazardous. The volume of donations we get every day (here in CT, we get over 100 and up to 300 a day) makes it impossible to accept everything that comes through. -A lot of the clothing we get is soiled, badly stained, and/or ripped or torn. It’s very unfortunate to say that about a quarter of the clothing we get is tossed out but you simply can’t have donors/customers without having some semblance of quality control. -Same applies to electronics and other items too. We are trained on what items are acceptable to give out and what needs to be tossed. Almost 3/4 of the items we get are straight up garbage in the fact that they’re in broken condition or too hazardous to sell. Like I said earlier, the notion that Goodwill should be a handout to the poor is a total lie. We can’t just give everything out for free or for dirt cheap prices. As soon as people stop treating goodwill as a landfill they can use to write their taxes off, the sooner we can reduce the amount of trash we have to throw away. 3. Pricing for clothing and other items is not a ripoff at all. Depending on the goodwill and where it’s located, the clothing and shoes we have don’t dictate our pricing, it’s standardized in GW CT. It is true that some places sell new clothes that are slightly more expensive than ones in goodwill. However, the clothes that we do price higher come from brands that charge over $20 originally for t-shirts and over $50-100 for dresses. You can argue with me but $7.99 for a name brand t shirt (OVER 60% OFF) and $11.99 for a dress (sometimes OVER 90% OFF ORIGINAL PRICE) is an absolute steal. You can tell me that it’s priced too expensive and I can get that. But to say is a ripoff is just a ridiculous overreaction. There has to be some logic to our pricing, we can’t just price dirt cheap on everything. In the end, I’m not defending goodwill for what it is entirely. The charity aspects of what we do in CT are murky and unclear. The executives are millionaires and are unfairly reaping profits, I get that. But as someone who has first hand experience, it’s totally unfair to judge it from the outside in the way that this video and certain commenters have done.

Yup. I used to work at Goodwill. It's a sham. They promise employees bonuses for meeting goals they never pay, threaten to make you work on your days off if you don't make said goals every time, and what isn't thrown away, which a lot of good stuff is, is either sent out to other Goodwills', or sold in bulk somewhere else. Nothing is ever really given to the needy, and barely any of the money earned goes to a good cause. It is basically a legal scam. You make people think you are donating to a good cause, but really you are just giving free product for a corporation to sell. I don't hate all corporations, or think they are all bad, but businesses like Goodwill remind me not to be trusting.

Your nearby church will come and get it and give it to those in need. My last move.....I donated two truck loads of everything to a church....they were so glad and happy. Some church families homes get burnt down or destroyed by tornadoes etc. they help those families start over. If one church can take it keep calling around...you will find one. I am tired of making the rich...richer as the poor and less fortunate do without and struggle. I know cause I was one of a family of eleven and we looked forward to getting those boxes of donated food and toys and clothes. BEEN THERE.

Goodwill is greedy. I remember a time when you could walk into a Goodwill and find retro video game consoles and games at really good prices. It was cheaper than buying from pricey eBay sellers. But now? Goodwill sells ALL of its retro video game consoles and games (which are donated for FREE, I might add) on ebay, where they make 10, 20 or 30 times the amount of money these items are actually worth. Working for the community my ass. Fuck you, Goodwill!

Overpriced? ROFL. I've gotten $150 brand new boots there for $15 and $90 fleece for $5.19. Even got a $350 sculpture for $5.19. People think since the items are donated they're "free". Take a peek in the back warehouse area of a Goodwill Store and see how many people are working in the back sorting, hanging and then stocking the floor and pricing the stuff. There are 3x more people needed to get the items on the floor than work in on the sales floor. Donated stuff doesn't come in on hangers and priced and then magically appear on the sales floor.

They should set up some kind of program with homeless shelters, if they don’t do it already, where they donate clothing that is needed at these shelters.....instead of throwing clothing away. Then again....we are a wasteful country.....buying so much clothing that closet doors don’t close....so what to do to take these unwanted clothes off their hands...because they have gone out of style...send them to the Goodwill! How much clothing and product can these places hold? Can they get free shipping to undeveloped countries that can use them? How many disabled programs have come forward to complain about not hiring their clients...or how many programs for the needy have come forward for Goodwill not donating to their organizations? I have shopped at the Goodwill for years.....if it helps me financially I am all for it.....I am not rich.

I realize that yes, it costs money to hire people to sort and price etc. But when you are getting DONATIONS to sell (that are fucking FREE), there shouldn't be a big issue of donating the things that don't sell within 4-5 weeks to people who cant even afford to buy clothing/supplies/toys at a thrift store. They say that the profits go to their career centers to help get people back on their feet, but when my husband and I came upon hard times and needed bus passes to get places, proper clothing for jobs, and licenses to be able to get a job in the food/security industry here in Nevada, they gave no help whatsoever. We were told we needed to have an interview lined up for a job, and when my husband finally got an interview they claimed that they no longer provide bus passes. All we were offered was to use their computers to job hunt for 1 hour. Which isn't free considering we needed bus passes to get there. We could have paid for internet where we were staying for a whole week for what it cost to get to goodwill to use their computers. We just could not afford it. We were donating plasma twice a week to get by and I was lucky to get some sales work at conventions but that was a complete struggle, literal week to week living with NO luxuries, meanwhile trying to put aside any little bit of extra money we could into making savings, which was extremely rare. It really pisses me off when people claim they cant afford this or that but they go get themselves luxuries like the new iPhone and Mc Donalds, meanwhile claiming that "oh! Everyone has FU money". Basically trying to downplay that they have more than you and make themselves feel better that they are doing way better than you, in the same breath they will act like they need help with this or that or that they cant afford food. We were lucky that some of our family decided to help us by sending money till we could get back on our feet but a lot of people don't even have family that is willing to help them, or any family at all for that matter. Sad but true. Seriously, fuck Goodwill they do NOTHING to help people as far as I have seen.

I know exactly where the good stuff ends up and when the online site went up. I went to my local Goodwill one day and the shelves were lined with fairly ok merchandise and came back the next day to buy something when I got my pay for the week. My item was not there but, no other quality merchandise was either. The shelves were picked clean. It looked like a going out of business sale.Slowly the store filled back up but, the items were not the same. They lined their shelves now with items they previously threw away. Mayonnaise jars for 3.00, figurines with broken appendages for 5.00, Furniture with three legs or very nasty for 30-100. . After a year or so I found their online store. It is corrupt with shill bidding going on worse than ebay in the old days. I know it is shill bidding because when I bid on something and a day or so later 2-3 people bid also. Thing is the bidding war on this item will stop if I quit bidding. If I bid again these shill bidders will start bidding again to raise the price more and again when I stop bidding the other bidders do not bid against each other. They only bid against me. The one item I did get was a used laptop full of roaches which I threw into the trash.

while i'm sure there is a certain amount of disposing of good items, g.w. does get a massive amount of trash / junk (incl items they can't sell for various reasons) in so-cal some items are sent to the main hub were they either go to other stores, outlet stores or are sold in bulk at their auctions. they also have a auction site were things are only listed on. their stores are generally represented clean and orderly, unlike other thrift store that look like junk shops. there has to be a certain level of maintaining what IS sellable and what is not.

If you are homeless so what they don't care.
