"I know that I know nothing" is a saying derived from Plato's account of the Greek philosopher Socrates. It is also called the Socratic paradox. The phrase is not one that Socrates himself is ever recorded as saying."
As a Believer, this was very well stated. It is arrogant to have answers for questions with uncertain evidence. I really do appreciate his respect for religion, because far too often do we see discourse in the scientific community over this immense question of origin.
I agree. I am a believer in both Science and religion. I truly think there really IS room for both. When you think about our understanding of space time, we tend to recognize time as a straight line, a beginning and an end, the alpha and the omega, but more and more evidence is leading the opposite direction in that there is no beginning or end, which is mind boggling in and of itself. In effect INIFINITY. That concept of time is staggering.
Religions are just ancient people giving answer to the same question we ask ourselves today, stupid answers but still It had the meaning of give something that people could hang on. Imagine beign born during the medieval period, not knowing anything about modern science, seems easy to just say everything is how It is because of a big dude in the sky. It was a simple answer to make things better, to give existence a meaning. But that opium that is religion is An hell of a drug and people today, with all the science etc still hang on those stuff because: is a simple answer to complex questions.
Whilst I agree that there is room for both science and religion, I find it very hard to accept any religion which has found its way to us in the form of a book. @Fire Stryker Well, if God is not His creation as a whole, if God is not a part of His creation, and if God's creation is infinite, then He can't exist, as nothing can exist outside of infinity, because this would mean that the infinity is bounded by this external higher being, while the definition of infinity is unboundedness. Your senses are being inhibited sometimes (blocked) or they can be magnified/intensified as well. Disclaimer: Kind of a dumb explanation, but science is like discovering the ones and zeros and coding that make up a video game from the perspective of the characters inside the cartridge. However, if the creators of that game never encoded their name, why they made the game and what the outside world is like outside of the game no amount of data mining will ever be enough to answer philosophical questions of existence from the perspective of the characters inside that game. It doesn't mean it isn't valuable, but trying to find meaning or a lack of meaning based on scientific discoveries may be like trying to describe what your favorite video game means to you based on the coding rather than the childhood nostalgia that you have thinking back to when you first played it.

Anyway, I enjoy listening to him talk about astronomy, and I appreciate his intellect and enthusiasm, no matter what is iq may be!
Science can only say "these are the ideas that we can confidently say are incorrect." With more time, we eliminate more incorrect ideas. Since there are infinite ideas, we can never eliminate all of the wrong ones...and that is where God will always exist.
Personally I just think God definitionally isn’t something science deals with. Science deals with measurable physical things and God is by definition neither of those. So even looking at God though the lenses of science doesn’t make sense. The scientific method is a great tool, but it is by no means an all purpose one.

He'll probably just ignore them as hoaxes because they don't fit into his stubborn rigid paradigm.

God says he has no beginning or ending as he is eternal, he doesn’t need foods or sleep he is not like his creation rather he’s is the loftiest attribute and he is aware of every things, nothing is hidden from him. mattmessuh “This doesn’t mean you can’t believe in God or gods. That’s not ruled out...”. “ it’s not the discipline of saying ‘you’re not right’, it’s saying ‘this is what we found out...’”. Those are pretty humble thing for a professor of particle physics to say, especially a famous one, imo.
Iconoclasticnation I’m not sure why “you can believe what you want, as long as you don’t disagree with me” sounds humble lmao. The ironic part is that observational science is only meaningful if your philosophy allows for it (so first of all, science is dependent upon philosophy), and furthermore, it can’t actually prove anything definitively. So everything he’s claiming to “know” really are just theories (yes, I know theories aren’t just guesses), especially when it comes to astronomy. we may see that the further away we look we see less carbon, and we see that nuclear fission produces carbon, but that doesn’t actually prove that the nuclear fission produced the carbon that we see. It is a reasonable theory, but it’s not something you can actually know to be the cause.
mattmessuh We’re talking in general terms here, not specifics. I don’t entirely disagree with what you’ve written, but I like that Brian makes plenty of concessions in acknowledging what science doesn’t yet know, and to me that’s humility. I agree that there are specific kinds of evidences that are open to a variety of interpretations, and that biases and assumptions do hold sway in some fields of science, but again, in this particular clip we’re talking generalities.
What's really interesting is that Christianity does indeed operate within that framework as you said. There are still some people who make up their own rules about Christianity and claim this to be right and this to be incorrect/wrong, but really the more deeper you explore these scientific laws and ideas, the more my belief of God *does* indeed exists grows and grows like a plant watered by scientific logic.

Yes but he does limit religion to operating inside of the realities of what we know through science. And it's the right thing, because religion has a place so long as they don't start killing people for telling the truth again.
Religion does not order to kill another human. Most of the time they sold you made up content just to put out their agenda against islam or other religions. Think this way...if islam order followers to kill others then why would same islamic religion will say *killing one human is like killing entire humanity and saving one human is like saving entire humanity*

rent a shill I guess. But the idea of God from what I see is a divine creator, or omnipotent being. If he was a high dimensional being I doubt he’d be a tangible physical presence we could interpret. So kind of an alien but more than that I guess.
Alessandro B10 Not necessarily. It would explain his influence in the world operating from a higher dimension. Religious texts would still hold up as God never appears as a physical being.
The next highest dimension from our own is the fifth. In the fifth dimension, time is accesible at any moment, past present, or future. This would eliminate the concept of decision making (free will), as all decisions are already “made”
Our universe is only potentially eternal in the same way that you are only potentially a figment of my imagination. that is to say, it’s not logically inconsistent, but all evidence points to the contrary.
Brian Cox is my absolute favourite scientist. He is such a great teacher. So passionate about astrophysics and so humble. And explains the concepts so elegantly. Wow! Loved him in Human Universe!
Thanks for that insight, Karl! I guess it happens with child prodigies (I'm guessing he was). I also feel that he must have had an innate humility to be this transformed. But who knows?
@@samienaamien7038 I removed my comment, I don't really see the reason to point the things out that I did, Brian is too great to be talked bad about, I guess I just wanted to emphasize that due to all the humble comments about him, he hasn't always been like that towards supernatural subjects, the Brian I started to know couldn't stand the questions, which was funny in itself, that's why it's great to see him grow and to be able to talk about it, because it's really great to hear his input on these things. And now I made the same comment anyways :P. Oh well, what I'm trying to say is Brain is the best, and I agree with your comment. I'm currently on a Brian Cox marathon, highly recommend it. Brian really makes you feel good and happy like nobody else. I would make my homework the same day that he's giving it to me :P. Great teacher, the best. As I once said, just imagine spending a night with him, but watching the stars that is, and hearing him talk.
@@karlkarlsson9126 I understood where you were coming from. And don't worry, I think it's great to know that people can grow in that way. Some scientists a la Richard Dawkins (great as he can be) tend to be as dogmatic about their own views as some of the religious orthodoxy can be. They forget that science is discovery. And they don't know enough about religion to refute it outright. They often take the scriptures too literally. I really enjoyed your comment. Also love the fact that you felt the need to delete it. It shows kindness and heart. Thanks!
PS. A night under the stars with Brian Cox sounds like heaven. I would just be listening, however. Maybe wanting to ask a few questions, but feeling too stupid to say anything. I would tell him that Contact is my fave sci-fi movie because it's got plausible science, philosophy and religion, and a very human element. And it was based on a story by Carl Sagan, one of his heroes.
Ro Lo slightly above average. He doesn't have high Fluid intelligence He's like a strategist, due to his years of podcasting he managed to talk and makes point. And that's a difference between obtaining informations and fluid intelligence. He's also self-aware, and asks questions.
Brian Fox, Joe Rogan and Michael Jones(IP) should do a podcast together. It is also odd that Rogan haven't had him on yet, that seems like an as fun discussion as IP and Jordan Peterson. Wonder how long it would be before both Rogan and Peterson meet Jones.
It's important to note that there is a distinction between religion and God. If there is a creator, it could be outside of the bounds of human comprehension all together if it is powerful enough to create all that we know and don't know (infinite multiverse?!). We like to put faces on things and liken them to ourselves. A force that acts outside of our known universe could be the ultimate creator and takes no form nor lends conscious connection to us. Every religion could be completely wrong and there could still be a God/creator. It's truly impossible to say because there are things that will ALWAYS be outside of our realm of understanding or quantification.
The Bible is the true word of God. It proves its self time and time again regardless it was written a long time ago. This means Jesus is God. Accept Jesus as your Lord today
@Ashton Mitchelll everyone has an agenda and we will always speak but never force. My agenda is for you not to go to hell. Free will is a gift from God. He made us not to be robots. It's your choice, choose Jesus today
@Ashton Mitchelll The historical evedence points to Jesus being God and the Bible points to Jesus too. There is no such thing as many ways to heaven. There is only one and that's through the gift of salvation Jesus have us by the cross. All the other religions are based acts and how good you are. Christianity is about a free pass to heaven by grace not acts. And yes you can turn it down and pass on the gift. It's up to you
