In this video:
In Judge C. R. Magney State Park in Minnesota, there exists a natural phenomenon along the Brule River known as the Devil’s Kettle- a waterfall that splits in two, with one half falling about 50 feet into the river below and continuing on its merry way towards Lake Superior and the other half falling into a large hole in the ground that seems to go nowhere. In fact, local legend posits that anything thrown into the Devil’s Kettle will never be seen again. People trying to disprove this have thrown everything from boxes of ping pong balls to giant logs into the hole to see where they end up, with nothing ever seeming to emerge anywhere nearbye. So where is the stuff thrown in going?

For the first time ever, I walked away from a today I found out video more confused then when I started. I still don’t understand where the water is going and why wouldn’t a camera or gps tracker be of any use? I understand the pressure is destroying things. Okay so, make a very strong gps tracker. Like the black box in airplanes? Is that not logical? 🤷🏼‍♂️
@gsp0113
@gsp0113 5 лет назад
I agree. This video was unsatisfying. Simon presents the hypothesis as an open-and-shut case when it's far from it. It's a hypothesis only. The fact that no one has tested it and it's being accepted as fact on faith is maddening. Sorry, Simon: I'm downvoting this video. I don't expect to come out of a "Today I Found Out" video more confused about an issue than I was before I watched it.
@Gamesaucer
@Gamesaucer 5 лет назад
As said in the video, the water simply rejoins the river. This was proven by measuring the water at the top and bottom of the waterfall. Since it's the same, the part that splits off into the Devil's Kettle _has_ to rejoin the river at some point between the two measurement locations. As for the pressure destroying things... I think you underestimate the power of flowing water. It's _incredibly_ powerful. I don't think we could make a camera that could withstand that kind of onslaught; it'd get shredded to bits. A GPS tracker might be a little more plausible since it doesn't require a lens, but it'd still be fairly expensive, and once again, there isn't really any guarantee it wouldn't be destroyed. I think this is why they wanted to use dye (though in the end it got called off) since you can't "destroy" dye. Compared to just dumping dye into the Devil's Kettle, trying to construct a camera or tracker impervious to the conditions inside the reservoir is needlessly complicated, so there's no reason to do it.
@TheOtherBill
@TheOtherBill 5 лет назад
Not logical, as Spock would say. A GPS device would be useless once it loses radio contact with the GPS satellites. Same reason they can't just drop a waterproof radio beacon in. I bet people have tried these figuring they'll get a signal when it comes out, we've never heard of that happening otherwise this video wouldn't have been made.

Not a bad idea, they would just have to divert the water to the main flow, easy. Then they could safely explore the hole, even if it doesn't drain they can use scuba gear, as long as the water isn't flowing into the hole they should be ok. My grandfather always wanted to have a fountain in front of his house. When he had enough money to afford it, he had one installed. People then started tossing wishing coins into the fountain. After some deliberation, my grandfather decided that he would collect the coins, and once a year, would buy the means to make as many sandwiches as he could, and bring it to the homeless people in the area. His idea was that this way at least somebody would get their wish. RIP grandpa.

We have a couple of rivers here in Idaho that actually do disappear. Just flow right into the ground. Scientists/hydrologists say they flow underground for 120ish miles and then pour out of a series of holes in the Snake River canyon walls in an area called Thousand Springs. Big and Little Lost Rivers are there names. Tons of local lore about what actually goes on but a really interesting phenomenon all the same.

For everybody who says asks haven't they X? It's probably because the falls are only accessible by a half mile hike with over 1600 feet of elevation change leading to an overlook looking into the near vertically sided gorge the falls are located in. To get to the top of the falls at river level you would then have to bushwhack your way through dense forest to get to a place where the river channel was reasonably not lethal to access and make your way along the wet, slippery rocks to the top of a high volume waterfall that will kill you if you fall in. Or you could try to make your way through the same dense forest for several miles, crossing at least one stream and very rough and rocky terrain to get to the top of the cliff on the other side of the river and they rappel down. Hope your will is written and your body washes up downstream because generally the state DNR does not send recovery teams after the bodies of people who got a little to close to our lovely waterfalls.

Actually they already have used dye to see where the flow re-emerged, expecting it to either show up further downstream in the river channel or in the lake, and it was not observed in the river or in the lake. It's possible it emerged much farther into the lake at a much greater depth, but it does not rejoin the river as suggested in this video.

In India, we have a different concept for tossing coins in water bodies. Earlier coins were made of copper. Scientifically copper ions are made when it's in contact with water. These ions will be present in water. Copper ions are helpful in digesting food and also helps in good health as you mentioned (*without any mythological reasons*).

When I was a boy in the early 1960's I had a buddy who's father had served in WWII. He was one of the soldiers who attacked Italy, and made his way up the country with his unit, routing the Germans who had taken over when Italy surrendered. While in Rome, he paid a young boy to dive to the bottom of a wishing well and bring up a handful of coins, as many soldiers of that time seemed to have. At any rate, he kept his ill gotten loot, and showed it to me. I was amazed at the ancient coinage that was among that handful. I wonder what they would be worth today. Sadly I have lost all touch with that buddy, as they moved away to somewhere, I doubt I ever heard where but I guess people come and go in our lives.

Still, probably best to quit tossing things before the system is either plugged up or damaged in some way.

SOLVED! Bashing ping pong balls, etc against rocks by a powerful waterfall won't make the items disappear. They might ding them up a bit, but not disintegrate them into atoms. I think the poor waterfall is got a cavity that is probably filling up with all this trash. There can't be a whole lot of space there. Also, if the water is is assimilated back into the stream without going very far, apparently the dye test should show up quite distinctly. SO, I propose the way to find out what is happening would be this: Contain and form a sluiceway from the remaining side of the falls, directing all the water in the stream into the Devil's Kettle. That way, the main falls should soon be nearly dry, THEN observe to see if the water begins to reappear in the stream, which would indicate THAT is where the water rejoins the streambed. It should work very well if done carefully.
@sschmidtevalue
@sschmidtevalue 4 года назад
To answer many of the comments: 1) Modifying the falls is prohibited, since it's a state park and such things are prohibited. 2) although it was once acceptable, dropping stuff like ping pong balls into a natural resource in a state park is also now prohibited. 3) dropping cameras or other equipment into the hole is not as easy as it sounds, since the rock outcroppings around the "kettle" are quite steep and difficult to access. 4) researchers are pretty sure that the water filters up into the river flow downstream; the river flow rate below the falls matches the rate above the falls.
