Where exactly did the bodies fall?? 💥 BOSTON MASSACRE

British troops fired upon a crowd gathered in King Street, Boston, on March 5, 1770. 11 men and boys were shot. In total 6 would die - 3 were wounded and lingered of their injuries for a couple hours or, in the case of Christopher Monk, even for as long as a decade. But three others died on the spot - Crispus Attucks, Samuel Gray, and James Caldwell. Here, we discuss some of circumstances surrounding their deaths, and where they were standing in the crowd on King Street, when the British troops fired.

I'm a bit of a historian regarding the American Revolution and I find your video very informative. They fill in so many details left out by many writers. Thank you very much Katie for all your hard work and excellent presentations. We can not forget our history and the sacrifices our forefathers made. A thought, as a retired military man, if I was a British soldier doing guard duty, away form home, cold and wet, in a city showing more animosity toward me and I was threatened and had debris constantly thrown at me, would I have shot someone in a form of self defense? Something to think about.

I know the site very well, I went to high school in Boston and we had American History for two years .when I was a sophomore Mr. Gilbert to the site to explain what occurred. Katie’s video was a lot more informative. I am 77 years old now, but my first job as a newly minted architect was about a block away from the site and state street ,as it is called now,, was my subway stop. Many times I wondered what I would have don if a mob threaten me. I think I would have most likely fired at the crowd. Glad I never had that experience.

Just started binge watching your channel. A really good watch. I finished the Concord Bridge video and now this Boston Massacre video. It reminds me of when I lived in Boston in the North End. I used to walk by Paul Revere's house on my way to work to Milk Street. I walked by the King street massacre site many times. I think the thing about history especially the revolution is along with the facts we get to fill in the blanks with our imaginations. I still come into Boston a few times a year. Always great history there to seen. I've been learning about revolutionary history since I was a kid and living in a revolutionary home makes it all the more valuable and a greater appreciation of how this country was formed.

Christopher Seider, an 11 year-old, was killed 11 days before the massacre, adding to the angst of the crowd. His funeral (orchestrated by Sam Adams) had a procession of several thousands, possibly the largest in Boston history (at least by percent of inhabitants).

I agree with the comment about the Penobscott disaster. The transcript of the Paul Revere court martial was very revealing about his personality. Revere only obeyed orders he agreed with. Read Bernard Cornell’s ‘The Fort’. It’s a novel but it is so descriptive of the arrogance of the man.. We put these historical personalities on a pedestal and it is so refreshing to read just how human they all were. Charles

We remember Revere mostly because of the work of his grandson.
@charlesromeo6398
@charlesromeo6398 5 месяцев назад
Yes, and most people forget that Revere’s greatest contribution to the revolution was wheeled the effort to place copper sheathing on the continental navy ship’s hulls. His Lexington alarm ride is way overhyped, thanks to the poem. And Revere’s career as a continental army officer was an unmitigated disaster, as evidenced by the guilty verdict at his court martial. Revere had friends in high places and eventually had the guilty verdict overturned, but his performance at the Penobscot battle was terrible. It all adds up to an interesting character. Charles

While the skill of a sailor in the Age of Sail was often judged by how well he knew marlinespike seamanship, the knowledge it embraces involving docking a craft, towing, making repairs underway, and more is still critical for modern seafarers. Nothing hardens a man more than tugging his rope, it imbues him with aggression and determination. I am not surprised they were front and center at this event.

Great work Katie, you made me feel as if I was there that very nite, of March 5th,1770. AS a former New Yorker, (left in 1978) now living in the People's Republic (i.e. communist) of Washington, in the Pacific Northwest, 50 miles north, from the SAN-FRAN-FREAK-O of the NORTH, formerly known as Seattle. Just remember, Washington is divided by the Cascade Mountain Range, the commie's all live west of the Cascades' the regular folk live in the eastern side. YES, Jeff Bezos (owner of Amazon) is moving from the People's Republic of Washington, to Florida, so as to literally save millions of dollar's in taxes, when he sell's some of his Amazon stock, later this year. You just gotta hear the local commie's crying in their soup, that because of their TAX THE RICH policy's, their getting NOTHING $$$$$!!!! Is this a great country or what!!!! God Bless America. Your Boston accent only adds to the drama for your mama. I'm truly amazed by the detail of the drawing as well as to learn who the artist was. For the record my thought was that John Adams (future 2nd POTUS, 1797 to 1801.) FYI: POTUS = President of the United States. I am aware, Adams successfully defended the eight British troops in court. Your passion is glorious to behold, thank you from a 70 yr's old man.
@michaelpalmieri7335
@michaelpalmieri7335 4 месяца назад
Exactly how do you know that the people who live west of the Cascades Mountain Ranges are "commies" (Communists)? Are you an undercover agent for the FBI or the CIA? Did you investigate these people? Do you have concrete proof that they're what you say they are? Did they show you their Communist Party membership cards? Do they have pictures of Karl Marx, or V.I. Lenin, or Josef Stalin, or Gus Hall (the late head of the American Communist Party) in their homes? Did they at least tell you that they were a bunch of "commies," unaware that you were spying on them? Or did you just assume that they're Communists because they said or did something that offended or contradicted your conservative viewpoint? For example, did they suggest that unfettered capitalism by greedy, corrupt corporations were contributing to the economic problems of our society by concentrating the majority of the wealth of this country in the hands of the rich and powerful few? Did they say it's unfair for the majority of the citizens to pay the bulk of the nation's taxes while the rich folks pay little or no taxes at all, because they always find clever loopholes in the tax code that helps them avoid paying as much as the rest of the people? Did they tell you that they believe that the rich should be taxed more, or that it was unjust for conservative Republican politicians to give generous tax breaks to the rich, but never to the poor or the increasingly vanishing middle class? Do they complain that the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer? Do they believe that the government should occasionally take a hand in caring for the less fortunate, or in doing something about the environment, or about climate change or global warming, or about systemic racism? Or perhaps you think they're "commies" because they belong to the DEMOCRATIC PARTY INSTEAD OF THE REPUBLICAN PARTY? Or maybe it's because they voted for Joe Biden instead of Donald Trump, or because they don't like how the G.O.P. has been taken over by right-wing maniacs like Marjorie Taylor Greene, Lauren Boebert, Mitch McConnell, Lindsey Graham, Ted Cruz, Matt Gaetz, Gregg Abbott, Glen Youngkin, Ron DeSantis, and the like, or how they've become more and more authoritarian-minded, how they're trampling over our personal freedom, banning books about subjects they don't feel comfortable with (racial issues, women's rights, gay rights, etc), putting restrictions on who should or shouldn't be allowed to vote, banning special medical treatments for gays and/or transgenders, trying to revoke the civil rights laws, threatening to punish anyone who doesn't go along with their plans (like the way Trump is talking about "setting aside" the Constitution, imprisoning or executing his opponents and critics, sending the army to gun down foreign refugees, even if they have their children with them, etc, if he wins the November, 2024, election), or how the Republicans (who believe in these crazy right-wing conspiracy theories like QAnon and Pizzagate) are basically turning the United States of America from a free country to U.S.-style FASCISM? Is that why you think they're all Communists? If so, then you're just as much a paranoid right-winger as Senator Joseph McCarthy, Congressman Martin Dies, FBI director J. Edgar Hoover, Ronald Reagan, Jesse Helms, or ADOLF HITLER! Remember that years ago, many liberal/leftist political movements were originally considered "subversive" by the professional hatemongers and reactionaries of their day. These movements included the abolitionist campaign against slavery, the Organized Labor movement, the women's rights crusade, the protests against McCarthyism and the blacklist, the environmental campaign, the anti-war movement of the 1960s and '70s, the protests against nuclear power and atomic war, the Civil Rights movement (its opponents carried signs saying things like "RACE-MIXING IS COMMUNISM!"), etc, etc. I think you are (like McCarthy and his ilk) confusing dissent with disloyalty, not to mention equating liberalism and progressivism to Communism. You should do some studying and research about the basic differences between all those.

By the negligent discharge of one musket, from eight soldiers being stoned, beaten with clubs, and verbally abused by an unruly mob. Seems so many these days DGAF about justice and just want to see their political opponents prosecuted no matter what.

@@ClockCutter I wasn't referring to legal matters. Rather political views. The accused were tried for murd3r, some were found guilty, and punished as prescribed by law. Of course, those in the mob, who provoked the incident. Obviously suffered no penalty for their actions. As for using the justice system to interfere with the political and electoral process. This should not be allowed to occur. The events going on in the US, with the weaponization of the justice system, against a political opponent, is a travesty.

Very interesting video. Thank you for the information and the great use of maps. I never knew that there was so much snow at the time. What do you think, do the drawings and paintings depict it? Even today, a foot of snow in downtown Boston would basically push everyone indoors.

I liked the particularly dark picture because it gives a sense of the snow lighting up white due to the firing - my sense is that it wasn’t recently-fallen snow, that it was likely packed down and well-trodden.

@@KatieTurnerGetty That makes sense. As long as they didn't say "Hither comes the snow." 😀

Hi Katie, I have an ancestor who I believe may have died in the revolutionary war. Any suggestions for good places to research this?

I finally got a chance to come back and watch this. Great video! I have enjoyed following your content. A test mid-video. Boo! 😂 It could be logical that John Adams would have sketched something like this in the defense of the British soldiers or similarly commissioned someone to do so.

I will guess the picture is by John Adams. He defended the British troops, and I think got them acquitted. His famous statement "facts are stubborn things" was uttered at the trial.

Was it John Adams that drew where the bodies were located? I think he was the attorney for the British soldiers involved.

Somehow the first name that popped into my mind was Paul Revere that drew the picture, then I thought it had to be Sam Adams. Always go with your first impression!

My guess (I haven't watched the video yet) would be that the map of where the bodies were located was drawn by John Adams, the defense attorney of the British Soldiers charged in the incident.

Edit: Good historical video. Are you exaggerating the accent? I live less than an hour from Boston and have visited the city many times. Its very thick. Like, most people Ive met with the accent don't have it that thick.
